General / A Very Crafty Carcassonne Christmas - 2015
« on: October 29, 2015, 08:44:32 AM »
Holiday Season 2015 is fast approaching - I thought we could celebrate it between us with a little 'secret santa' style gift giving exercise.

The General Idea

If/When we have enough participants, I will randomly pull names to create a Chain of Gift Giving; then PM you with the details of the person to send to.

EG:  A-->B-->C-->D-->A

Most people here on CarcC have most of the Carcassonne things they need (possibly more than), except a few of those pricey rarities; because of this, we thought your gift to another member should be something more personal or unique.  It would be worth making sure your Profiles are up to date.

We were thinking gifts should cost around £5 / 7€ / $10 / regional equivalent.  Bear in mind that some members of the forum may be further away than others, so postage fees may induce additional costs.

Please remember the gift of giving is more important than the art of receiving.  Please do not be disappointed if: having spent 1000hrs constructing a 100 unique tiles and crafting meeple from stone using nothing more than a toothpick, you only to receive a blank tile with some obscure crayon marks in return.  Remember that the person receive your gift will be thrilled with your gift and that is worth more than anything else.

I may ask that photos of gifts are forwarded to me, prior to sending just to make sure gifts are kept in proportion - it also means all the photos can be posted here on the forum at the same time.

Some Suggestions for Gifts

It would be great to craft a fan expansion as a gift, maybe a set of tiles with some artwork on them.

Alternatively, you could construct Christmas decorations or make custom score markers.

Artscow bags are usually welcome too.

If you really feel you're artistically challenged, like me, then I don't want to exclude you - there are plenty of items available, like meeple or tokens, that could be used to make expansions without having to make custom tiles.

If you're desperate I'm sure you could buy something on Etsy/Ebay/Basically Wooden.

Registering an interest
I think it's important to make sure you're keeping an eye on your PMs if you're taking part.  I wouldn't want anyone to not receive a gift because someone became inactive or didn't have the time to commit etc.

If you'd like to take part, or have a suggestion, please include your name below.

Blimey, that second one looks like it would survive a house fire!

Where did you get the first one, this looks like the sort of thing I need for another game - what the the tray heights?

Any preferences on Spin-Offs? I was hoping Over Hills and Dales or Star Wars would be here, but it seems unlikely now.

I've got a copy of Discovery & New World I'd like to try too.

Also are there any fan-expansions you've wanted to try? I might be doing one more print run tonight - so could include some smaller expansions.

Fantastic news! Glad you're all sorted.

I've not got any firm plans for the day, so open to suggestions. You're welcome to bring whatever you like. I've got various OCDs so will be bringing 3 copies of the base game, some mini-expansions, a crate full of gifts and prizes (thanks to kettle and Ailurus) and a bag of stuff i owe Dan.....and if I'm lucky some chilli-cheese-scones.

Would probably be good to have some expansions too.
We should have the room 10-5; I'm not too fussed about rugby now that Wales are out :( But watching the Rugby world cup final in Rugby while Andrew is watching it at home does have some appeal.

No doubt we can find a pub with a table for some pub-carcassonne.

I emailed service@cundco.de in English, on the 26th and got a response within 3 hours.

My parcel was shipped on the 14th.
Recorded on DHL on the 20th.
Picked up by DHL on the 27th.

So generally it looks slow.

You should have a tracking number on your order when you log into the new website.

Thanks very much - The 2nd batch got sent yesterday.

Everyone's should be en route, with the exception of franks and toasty-toast, who I'm going to send a big bundle with their Welcome Tournament goodies in too (wondering why I didn't do that for Halfling now).

The Final Game of the Welcome Tournament was played last night between:  Merlin_89,  Rich_The_Fish & Halfling.

I'm afraid to say I missed the start of the game.  But due to Halfling's laptop crashing I was able to join and watch the last 72 tiles being played.

Needless to say, it was very tense!

The beginning of the game seemed to be predominately Tower tiles.  Merlin was just ahead at this point and Rich had already managed to play all of his meeple, except his phantom.

By around 50 remaining tiles, Rich had managed to close the gap, complete some features, get some meeple stolen and rescued others with Towers and cunning Corn Circle Play.

With 20 tiles left Catastrophe Hit!

We hit a JCloisterZone bug where Merlin had played a Corn Circle 2 tile, but was unable to select to 'remove' or 'add' extra meeple.  While it was popped up it became Halfling's go!

There was a short (well extremely long) interlude and I painstakingly undid Merlin's turn so, the game could continue as intended.  We also seemed to have another issue where 30xHalflings and 30xRich_the_Fishes join the hosted game!

After about 40 minutes we were able to resume.

It's worth remembering that sometimes the hardest part of the game is juggling your followers and your extra wooden pieces.  Do you play a tower?  Do you place your phantom there?  When do you play your pig?  What about my Builder?

I think it's fair to say every player made a few mistakes in their last few turns at the table.

Almost out of nowhere: Halfling put his followers to hard work farming, though some would say it was all carefully planned.

At the end of the game; it was going to be close but it came down to how the last tile was used by Merlin_89.

I'll be posting some pictures very shortly with scores - and hopefully the players will include descriptions from their perspective.

The Final rankings are:

1)  Halfling
2) Merlin_89
3) Rich_The_Fish

Special prizes will be sent to these players in the coming days.

General Note:
Well done everyone!  I hope you've learned some new Carcassonne mechanics, played some intense games and possibly made a few mistakes you'll never make again!

All in all I hope you enjoyed the process and met a few new people.

Other Groups - I have yet to hear if you have managed to play your final match.  If you can: please schedule your matches before 9th November - If you're not interested in completing the tournament then please let me know.  As soon as all the games are sorted I can post the prizes!
