Other Games / Alhambra
« on: August 21, 2013, 11:08:41 AM »
I remember that Bixby posted a detailed review of Alhambra and all of it's expansions on the old forum.  I don't recall if it was the text, or just the link, but can someone find that again or could you repost here Bixby?  I'm curious about the Family Box and the expansions it contains compared to the Big Box, which I know has 20 expansions included.  Thanks!

Unofficial Rules / Winter edition adaptations?
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:25:22 PM »
Took a first look at the CAR for the Winter ed. today.  Left me with a few questions.

Has anyone adapted the Gingerbread rules to the regular game?  Seems simple enough to do, just need some tiles to do it with.  It might be a good use of the Plague tiles if you don't want to use the plague rules.  You could paint up an old pointy head Discovery meeple (which I understand do not come with that game anymore, is that right?)

I assume the animal tiles on the winter edition are similar to the animals from the H&G variant.  I can only assume because I've never seen it.  Would it work the same way?  Have we submitted any suggestions for them to HiG?  I see in the rules that they have offered to take them.  Has anyone done something with them here?

I could probaly find the answers to some of these questions if I spend time looking, but I thought I'd let someone who knows point me right to them.

Reviews & Session Reports / Wind Roses and School
« on: August 19, 2013, 01:00:28 PM »
Played my first game including both the Wind Roses and the School the other day.  I've very glad to have the Wind Roses in my collection, but as far as game play, they don't add a whole lot to the experience.  Still, a chance at three extra points for free is never a bad thing.  I did enjoy the School.  In a five-player game, I don't think I got to claim it one time, but my son got it three times.  It comes in handy, you just have to remember it when it's time to score the points!  Kinda like the fairy.  What do you guys do with the Teacher when all the school roads are completed?  We just decided to lay the teacher down on the school and leave it there.

General / Super Mega Meeples
« on: August 16, 2013, 02:07:13 PM »
I don't know how super or mega they are, but I just received an email from Meeple Source today.  They now have Super Mega Meeples.  They are 24mm in height.  This is half again the hight of a regular meeple and the regular mega meeple is about 3/4 that height.  I'm sure they could be used for all kinds of things if you are so inclined.

Other Games / Infinite City
« on: August 02, 2013, 01:30:10 PM »
I recently played Infinite City for the first time.  It's a tile laying game as well, but is much simpler even than Carcassonne.  It was great fun.  I can't wait to play it again.  I would definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it.  It gets a lot of comparisons to Carcassonne.

General / Mega Carc reference guide.
« on: August 02, 2013, 01:22:27 PM »
I've been thinking... when playing megacarc, it's pretty easy to get lost with everything that's going on, especially if you are not a seasoned vet.  I played a game the other night with 4 newer players and about 250-300 tiles.

I think it would be really nice to have a resource like a sheet with a symbol reference on it so people don't have to feel like they have to ask a lot of questions if they don't want to.  Perhaps just a picture of the symbol and a very brief description of what it does.  Maybe it would be good to have special meeples on there as well.

If we got really fancy, we could create a program with check boxes for the expansions you were planning on using and it would print out a more concise sheet.  This way, it could even include fanspansions!  My skills are inadequate for the task though.

Official Rules / Crop circles and farms
« on: August 01, 2013, 08:25:20 AM »
I couldn't find an answer to this anywhere, but I seem to remember there being discussion before.  Does a farm continue through a crop circle or is it a barrier to a farm?

Reviews & Session Reports / First session with minis
« on: July 31, 2013, 02:30:23 PM »
Played a three player game last night with the minis plus the Wheel.  I probably handicapped myself a little bit since they were all new to me and I was teaching my eager, 5-year-old son, but I hadn't had an opportunity to play them before, so I took it.  I found them to be pretty intersting.

The Ferries - give opportunities to steal long roads if they are available and gives the roads a little bit more value, if only perceived.

The Flyer - worked perfectly a time or two.  Didn't think I'd like it, but it turned out to be pretty good.

The Mage - seems strangly familiar... I digress.  Seemed to work fine.  I was a little confused as to whether you were permitted to move one on the board while the other was still off to the side.

The Gold Mines - This one was a lot of fun, maybe because I got eight of them, four in one move, but enjoyable.

The Robber - Not sure we played this right.  If I were to skip one, this might be it.  Having so many figures on the score board was really confusing at times.  I confused them for the other meeple more than once.

The Messages - This was a nice little bonus every now and then.  Again, it was a little confusing having multiple figures on the board, but my only gripe is that there are too few (and perhaps also that my son knocked the stack on the floor so after shuffling, my wife got the extra tile one twice in a row).

Corn Circles - First play with this as well.  It did make for some intersting decision making during the game.  Can definitely be used to your advantage.

Festival - Not a mini, I know, but it was my first play as well, so I included it.  I found it to be not that useful.  I don't think anyone took advantage of it the whole time.  I think I might be the type of player that would rather wait and hope that I eventually pull the tile I need though, especially if it's a decent sized city.

Reviews & Session Reports / WBC - Carcassonne Tournament 2012
« on: July 23, 2013, 11:24:10 AM »
I went to the World Boardgame Championships last year.  I was only there for two days, but it was fun.  I had hoped to detail my experience at the time, but the forum hadn't been fixed yet.  I just remembered about it today.  I was skeptical that it really was a world championship, but was surprised at the number of people in attendence and the long distance they travelled, so I'm satified to acknowledge it as such.

Briefly...  Al games were two-player with only the base set.  I played my first game against a young guy who we pretty good, but I defeated him by about 20 points or so.  If I recall correctly, I took the big farm from him to seal it.

My second game was against a 20-something girl who got extremely lucky, but perhaps only when compared to my bad luck.  I think I drew something like 12 road-only tiles in a row, mostly straight roads.  She seemed genuinely sorry for me and my bad luck.  Meanwhile, she drew four cloisters almost in a row and put them all together is a 2x2 block and quickly completed them all for 36 points while requiring only 16 tiles.  I was severly demoralized and sort of threw in the towel at that point.  She ended up building a small city at the end of my really long road out the side of the main gameplay.  That small city quickly got up around 20 points before I quite snivelling long enough to notice.  By that time it was too late to get into it and as you probably guessed a while ago, I lost.  It wasn't an overwhelming defeat though as I managed to catch up enough to lose by somewhere around 10 points.  If I hadn't been so busy feeling sorry for myself and let her have that city, I'd have had a real chance to win.  I found out later that she was a champion from a year or two previous.  I guess I don't feel so bad losing to a champion, but I think I could have hung with most of the players in the room.

Despite my whining, it was fun.

The Marketplace / Catching up - What I "need".
« on: July 23, 2013, 11:12:22 AM »
So I would be really intersted, now that I'm hanging on to my collection, to bring it up to date.  I am in need of Windrose (I think I'm getting one of the leftovers), The School (which I believe is still available at Cundco), The Little Houses, The Plague (I traded it) and the original Kornkreise which I'm sure is very difficult to get at this point.  I had been hoping for the release of the Plague, Tunnels, and Corn Circles expansion, but I see that's not happening.  Anyone have any extras of these lying around?  If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Other Games / Board Game Arena

Hey guys, unfortunately, Carcassonne is not one of the options, but I found a website where you can play many different board games.  It seems to be well done.  Check it out HERE.

The Marketplace / FS - Instant Carcassonne Collection
« on: March 18, 2013, 09:09:49 PM »
It is with great remorse that I must offer up my Carcassonne collection to a good home.  It makes me sad to see it sitting on the shelf month after month never seeing the table.  If I get the opportunity to play with anyone, I am usually teaching them and we play WoF as it is still in it's own box.  I may keep it (WoF), but I haven't decided for sure.

I would greatly prefer to keep this collection all together as several expansions are mixed together and would be difficult to seperate.  I'd like to get at least $200 for the whole set.  If you'd like to make an offer, the best way to contact me is by email.  If by some miracle there are more than a few interested people, I can set up an auction.

Some of it is gently and lovingly used, some has never been played.

Here is the inventory to the best of my knowledge:

Carcassonne Big Box 2
Base Game
Inns & Cathedrals
Traders & Builders
Princess & Dragon

The Cult Places

The Tower
The Catapult

GQ11
Cult, Siege, & Creativity

The Phantom (blue)
The Festival (tiles only)
The River 1
All 6 mini-expansions

Fan-expanions:
The Kings Gate
The Missionary (one gold painted H&G meeple and a disk in all colors exept Gold, Nude, and Camo)
The Shepherds in the six original colors (one shepherd & five sheep) A labor of love...
The Leper
About 2 dozen tiles from Families (red/yellow pennants)
Cleric and Serf
About 2 dozen individual tiles from the solazy and mathguy expansions and others.
Many extra meeples in the base colors including:
Two H&G huts each
One Discovery meeple each
One Travel Ed. meeple each
One sheep, boar, and cow each (for the Dragon Hunter expansion)
An extra Dragon
A few more odds and ends.

I also have a few less than 500 blank tiles (brown front and back) that were put up for sale a couple years ago by Chri5lynn (?).  I gave a few of them to a friend, no more than 50, but I don't know for sure.  I'm guessing there are about 450 tiles.  These will go seperately.  Make me an offer.

If anyone is intersted, I'm also selling a large Munchkin collection, Flash Point: Fire Rescue, and D-Day Dice.
