Title: 2017 World Cup - Group B
Post by: MrNumbers on November 28, 2017, 01:45:15 PM
Welcome to the group stage of the 2017 World Cup of Carcassonne Central! This thread is primarily for members of Group B to arrange matches between themselves and post scores, screenshots and the obligatory smack-talk as the group progresses. The top 2 players from this group once everyone in the group has played all 5 of their matches will advance through to the knockout stage.

Here is a list of the group members (including location):

If you haven’t read them already, please ensure that you are familiar with the tournament rules/ general information (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3623.msg54092#msg54092) and our Code of Conduct (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2700). You may also find the JCloisterZone FAQ (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=778) interesting/ useful if you have any unanswered questions about how JCloisterZone works (or you can just PM me).

Group stage expansions
All games at the group stage should include the following expansions:
  • Inns & Cathedrals
  • Besiegers
  • The Festival
  • The Phantom

Good luck! :) :(y)

Halfling started and just managed a very narrow win in a farm war.  Each of the last 2 tiles caused 50 point swings as extra farmers joined the only farm that mattered.

A very close and enjoyable game.....I have to declare that I am currently on extra strong steroids, taken deliberately, due to a medical condition, so I hope I won't be thrown out of the tournament.  (Kettlefish on standby?)

Just remembered that there is a festival tile field issue.  I think it won't affect the scoring of Halfling vs Xanderx12, but we would appreciate an adjudication to be sure.

thanks

Because you tied the farm that contains the bug, it won't affect the scoring. I have counted the main (only!) farm manually several times and I keep coming up with 57, not 60. I'm counting 17 completed cities, two besieged. Any one else want to count?

After a few false starts we got the game underway once I added the 4.0.0 plug ins.

Rosco took an early lead but I took the city at the top and grabbed a couple of medium sized roads with Inns and had more meeples to throw into different farms as the game closed.

Halfling started.

I played conservatively, Xander12 played expansively and in the end, I'm afraid the conservative approach worked out.  That said, it wasn't without risk.  I contributed a lot to Xander12's big city with cathedrals before I finally closed it off.  You know the crude trick of making a cathedral city unfinishable by adding every CCCC and CCC? tile that you get to it.  Too big to fail, quite the opposite, to big to succeed.  Xander12 started the main farm.  I let it happen, then I tried to get on.  He made a vain attempt to get his big man on.  I though he had no chance when I started routing 1 of the two roads northwards.  But he scored 2 FFFR cloisters in a row and "glommed on".  I got lucky to "glom" by big man on.  All in all, an unusal game.  I wasn't expecting to win with roads!

Good luck in the rest of the tournament Xander12.

So that was a great game - you will guess by my positivity that i won - but it could have gone either way - a few tiles the other way round and Khalid might have had the game.  I was leading from word go but khalid was never far behind.  he successfully got in on both of my cathedral cities and seemed to continually place farmers in perfect places to add on to my farm but didnt have the luck to actually add them.

This was truly a fun game.  Thanks Khalid!
Khalid started BTW

Well that was a very interesting game.  I felt like i was constantly on the back foot and constantly being blocked from waht i wanted to do.  The enormous cahedral city just kept growing and growing.  When whatif got the cccf tile with 2 separat city sections at the north of the city thus separating my meeple from the main city, I thought that it was complete and therefore my humilating defeat was complete, however i saw the scores didnt change and the meeples didnt come back to my pot - i was a little confused and thought it was a bug but i dragged the map down and noticed the city was actually not complete.  i still had a glimmer of hope.  I added small scores from citys and roads and desparately tried to equalise the farm but was blocked again and again. i was just hoping that the city was unfinishable.  so with 4 tiles to go i found a high risk placement for my final meeple - my phantom - to try to get in the farm.  by some miracle my last tile was a rrff which connected it in giving me a very very unexpected win.

I think Whatif outplayed me and mostly out lucked me until that last tile.  a good game albeit very strange.

Thanks Whatif!

khalidqasrawi  :red-meeple: 205 :  145 :yellow-meeple: WhatIf

Bad start by me.  Some moments of indecision left me unable to spoil, join or otherwise do something to the large cathedral city in the centre.  That cost me 39 points so I was down and out, almost.  I did complete the long bent sausage shaped city right of it for 18 points.  The CFRR tile was a long time coming to to allow me to complete a 8 point city and a 12 point road with an inn.

Towards the end of the mid-game, I realised my only real chance of success was to make the main farm mine.  I was liberally adding farmers then made a statement by putting the 2 man down to join the farm with 50 odd tiles to go.  WhatIf immediately countered with his 2 man on the west bit of the unfinished cathedral city.  I decided I could block it off at least, probably.  Well, seems I did.  All around the farm, WhatIf was looking for ways on, waiting for a festival tile to take the 2 man off, so he could redeploy it and that time ate into his lead.

It would have been a good game for the spectator to see if WhatIf could find a way on.  I think the crowd would have been on his side.  Too bad no one was wanting to watch.

Thanks for the game and good luck WhatIf.

Halfing  :yellow-meeple: 222 : 242  :red-meeple:  khalidqasrawi

I played for farms so I don't really understand how the farm score was so similar!!
Halfing went all out on cloisters.  I did none.
I did score a cathedral city, one of those where your opponent "gives" you the cathedral, so that was sweet.  I set it up to need a CFRF and I was lucky enough to get one!  You could say that won me the game because I got 24 for it.
I spread my farmers around with the hope that gloming on to any farm would not be enough by itself which turned out to be the case.
Halfing actually only made it onto the south west farm on the last tile.

All the best Halfing, thanks for the game.

Xander :blue-meeple: and I  :red-meeple: played our game tonight and it was a great game.  I kept pushing his decisions but then he did the same to me a couple of times too.  I was in the lead pretty much all the way but I knew the large farm was key and he had it for most of the game.  In the last few tiles Xander got a great placement to take the farm but i was in luck and i was able to position a meeple so that adding his, would also add mine.

Thanks Xander

Title: Re: 2017 World Cup - Group B

I was able to play one very late game with Rosco...

131  :yellow-meeple: Merlin_89 - Rosco  :red-meeple: 106

With or without expansions that game was quite special! Rosco started very nice picking special CCCC (with small cities pieces), he chose well, he placed farmer, used phantom to complete 4-points city, and just like that he was off to great start. Few rounds of tiles and that farmer was surrounded by 4 small cities, I couldn't find the way to counteract it. That situation forced me to act aggressively with farmers as well, I needed to win farm on the outside.

And all crazy things have started. From that point, we concentrated on adding farmers and expanding it. I set the pace, but Rosco was not that far behind me. I thought it'd be nice to do sth other than farming and decided to attack Rosco's city with double meeple, and that move nearly turned out be fatal for me, as Rosco very quickly decided to use his to join the farm. It tied us, I had limited supply of meeples but I decided on that crazy strategy, and put more farmers. I had luck, as I managed to join them all, I ended with 8 meeples in farm!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rosco was left with one meeple, he could do whatever he wanted, but he needed to tie the farm to win. He made small mistakes, he was close... But I defended the farm, and I won!

ULTIMATE FARM GAME! And possibly smallest winning and loosing score...

I keep having problems with using twists of expansions to my advantage. Rosco, well played!

It's true the smallest winning score, but only second losing score (first is 77 points).

Rosco is the first in this World Cup to finish all his group games. For now he still is on the first place in the group and keeps good chances for quarterfinals.

khalidqasrawi  :red-meeple: 198 : 180  :yellow-meeple: Merlin_89

Close match.  Didn't feel as if either of us were fighting hard.  I struggled with "trapped" meeples but Merlin had underperforming meeples too.  No big cities for either of us.  In the end, we fought over the farm I had it for a while but Merlin crept back on.  I reclaimed my double meeple but couldn't get it into play.  He made a last minute effort to get the farm but didn't quite own it and in the end I just kept ahead.

Thanks for the game.

I'll need more than luck. Looking for divine intervention.
A blue screen error wasn't what I was looking for though. Apparently it is an issue with a Windows update and not the hard drive. I should have the laptop back tomorrow.

A great game which Merlin won by 30-40 points.  I claimed a 51 point cathedral city and then Merlin went agricultural and cleaned up on the farming in the last 25 tiles.  I have PM'ed What If? to try to get the dead rubber played.

217  :red-meeple: Merlin_89 - Halfling  :yellow-meeple: 180

I suffered a loss last time against Khalid, I've made some tactical errors, so I really wanted to course correct my game yesterday.

First of all, I knew blocking your opponent is rather a loss of time when playing with Besiegers and The Festival... I wanted to improve my strategy but somehow my game switched from attack to defence completely... I was blocked in at least 3 places, Halfling kept picking Besiegers tiles, undermining my cities one by one. It was a crazy frustrating start! But I knew I'd have had plenty of occasions to rise up. And it happened, Halfling was busy blocking, and I picked right tiles, I kept scoring, and I was ahead in points. It was a good moment for me, but then I picked Cathedral tile, and I used it in Halfling's city, with an idea of expanding it and never allowing it to be closed. It worked for a while... short while... Halfling closed it out! First thought? I'm OUT! I can't win! Second... what can I do to change things... big farm! I used the very first situation to push my big follower into the field, I found one good spot, and just like that, I joined... It was a lucky, quick and effective strike and it left Halfling with very little time to respond. He couldn't respond to that.

Really good round of Carcassonne!

I have one game left in round stage, but What If seems to be hard to catch on Central recently. I hope to play soon!

If, like myself, you enjoyed the competition of the Carcassonne World Cup, but failed to qualify for the knock-out stage, you might be interested in joining our little tournament that we are setting up amongst the others who did not qualify.

Details can be found here ;- http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3835.0 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=3835.0)

I hope that you will all consider joining this friendly tournament, especially as you can't get "knocked out" of this one before the end.
