Players and Chosen Expansions
Danisthirty - King & Robber Baron
Jéré - The Phantom
Jungleboy - Mage & Witch
Leven - Inns & Cathedrals
MrNumbers - Abbey & Mayor
Xanderx12 - Princess & Dragon
Fixtures
Each player is to play a single two-person game of Carcassonne using JCloisterZone against each of the other players in the division. The starting date will be 1st December 2018 and all games must be played and the results posted on this thread before midnight GMT on Friday 16th February 2019. The starting player in each case will be chosen at random.
The tile set for each game will consist of the base game and each of the competitors' chosen expansions, i.e. two expansions are to be used in every match.
The Division
As a result of each match, each player will be awarded league points according to the following rules:-
Most game points for roads – 1 point
Most game points for cities – 1 point
Most game points for cloisters – 1 point
Most game points for farms – 1 point
Most game points overall (formerly referred to as 'a win') – 1 point
Tying any of the above with opponent – 0.5 points
This means that all matches have 5 points available to be distributed to the two players.
A league table with points gained from matches played will be maintained and regularly posted to this thread by the tournament organiser.
The top ranked two players after all matches have been played will be declared 'Champion' and 'Runner-up' respectively. The lowest ranked two players will be eligible for relegation.
In addition to the Champion and Runner-up, the following will be awarded:-
The Brave Brigand – the player with the most league points for roads
The Knoble Knight – the player with the most league points for cities
The Crafty Cleric – the player with the most league points for cloisters
The Fruitful Farmer – the player with the most league points for farms
The Triumphant Tiler – the player with the most league points for winning games
After each match, it is the winner's responsibility to ensure that the result is posted to this thread clearly showing the points awarded separately for Roads, Cloisters, Cities and Farms.
The full rules have been attached for you all to read at your leisure.
Please do not start playing league matches until 1st December, but it would be in all players' interests to try out a few pre-season matches as in my Freshers' Week post earlier today. http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4138.0 (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4138.0)

Hello gang!
Can't wait to get started... :) :(y)
-
Hi Guys! Just to let you know that Rosco, Chooselife, Halfling, Rich_The_Fish and myself all have experience with the new points system in this tournament, and it might be a good idea if you were to use us for your pre-season friendlies.
-
Thanks again Steve for setting this up. I'm keen to play some practice games, especially since I haven't actually played Carcassonne in ages. Actually I've only ever played Carcassonne three times and, amazingly, all three games resulted in victories over danisthirty - two practice games in 2014 and the Ark of the Covenant showdown.
At the moment organising games is a bit difficult while I'm travelling (re: Internet access, timing etc). I'm three hours behind UK time right now, but by Friday it'll be back down to two hours, so maybe this weekend or next week it might be easier to arrange a game.

I think you're forgetting this game (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1041.msg15330#msg15330). Regrettably it was yet another victory over me for you, but you only beat Rosco and B1nder thanks to the fact that I was determined to get my barn onto Rosco's barn farm even if that meant dragging your rubbishy barn along too...
-
I think you're forgetting....
THIS GAME:
Next up was Carcassonne, I rarely get to play 4-player and it's nice to see such a busy board. I was late to the scoretrack, but it was a close game as you'll see.

Oh, and this one...

(before calculating our final scores Nick and I were still on the same square and I'd successfully resisted a delicious burger that had been sitting next to me for at least 15 minutes)
So, the final scores were:
Dan :blue-meeple: (87)
Nick :green-meeple: (75)
Tom :yellow-meeple: (64)

That was a good burger.... and at least you didn't need to wait 45minutes for a cookie to arrive at our table on a plate.

Oi you lot!! Get on your own thread!! This is for League results!! C:-)

I am up for a friendly game tonight or tomorrow night if anyone's keen.

Sorry "jungleoy" (if that is your real name), but I only do unfriendly games. :P
-
Yo dudes!
We've officially started and there haven't been any games yet despite the fact that we're all in the premiership and so should be being paid at least €100m per game. So... we're visiting the Harry Potter studios this afternoon, but Wednesday, Thursday or Friday are looking good for a game at this end if anyone else is free then?
Let's get the premiership underway! 8) :(y)

Dan, your sponsorship from the Trump University was supposed to be a closely guarded secret. I now have a long list of players asking why they are not being paid appearance money.

Don't worry the Steve. I can fix it. Nobody will know a thing...

Hello again chaps.
All the other divisions are making us look bad, so I've decided to declare myself the winner of our little league by default. That way we can be finished, and don't have to go to the trouble of playing any games. O:-)
Thanks everyone for your participation, the competition was certainly very close at times, like when jungleboy and I almost got together to play a "friendly" game :o! But I like to feel that the best, and most handsome, player won in the end and deserves the overall title.
Failing this, if anyone would like to play an actual game some time I'm happy to oblige...
Come on guys! :(y) 8)
-
Congrats on your theoretical win Dan.
-
And who's in the automatic relegation spot(s)?
-
And who's in the automatic relegation spot(s)?
Hmm. Good question.
Well, it would be remiss of me not to have Jungleboy demoted, for obvious (personal) reasons. I'm struggling to decide between Jéré and MrNumbers for the second spot, but probably MrNumbers as he's chosen Abbey & Mayor which does my head in with all the farming opportunities and wagon tomfoolery. ::)
-
Sorry for my lack of availability so far. I'll be home in two weeks so hopefully I'll have a chance to start playing some games then.
-
From Monday 10th I will have all the day free to play in JCloister if anyone want a match :)
-
Hello all,
My daughter is 1 week old today (born Dec 1st) so it has been quite busy times recently. I should be available this coming week for games, so don't hesitate to contact me. thanks.
Jéré
-
Congratulations Jere! I hope that you and family are all well and adjusting to life as a four well!
I also hope that your new arrival is sleeping well and that you aren't too sleep-deprived. But if you are, please let me kbiw when you're at your most exhausted and we'll play our game then! >:D
-
Congratulations on your newest family member, Jéré. Best wishes.
As for me, these are quite busy weeks for me, too. I might be available for one or two games during the next two weeks, but I would rather prefer to play my games after Christmas.
-
Félicitations Jéré !
-
Many congratulations Jéré and Mrs Jéré from bonnie Scotland! :(y)
-
Congratulations, Jéré! Now you have a full set! ;) :D
-
I would really like to see something happening in this group but action has eluded us all so far. Which isn't great. But we're all as guilty as each other of this, so let's try to make a fresh start now that it's 2019.
I will be available from Monday 7th January and will be available throughout the entire week for anyone who thinks they might have an hour or so of availability then. Please post here if you do so we can schedule a slot in the calendar and hopefully it will spur everyone else to jump on the bandwagon too.
Let's do this thing.
-
I'm ready to play all the rest of the day, PM me!
-
It's hard to believe but the first game of the division has been played this evening.
Even though there has been some issues with the online server which crashed before even starting the game. Then a very unusual error happened: I tried to host a game with JCZ v4.3.0 but Xanderx could not select the colour for himself. Has anyone seen such a bug before? In the end we played with v3.4.3 without any problem.
Xanderx could have won the game easily in the end but made a wrong dragon movement at his last turn which gave the dragon an unexpected extra meal, and by losing that blue farmer my Chilean friend lost a 30 points farm... Ouch.
The final result is: Leven 3 : 2 Xanderx12
-
Well done on getting a game in. We have had a house guest staying with us for the last week or so but tonight is her last night, so from tomorrow night I should be able to play. I might have to abandon my hopes of a practice game and just get straight into it.
-
I am pleased to see that the new year has brought this competition to life. I hope that the Premiership and League A will both start to take shape over the next couple of weeks.
Attached is the table standings after the first match.

Congrats on playing your game Leven and Xanderx12! Glad that our group is finally off the ground.

Mystic Nick and I had our first games of this league this evening:

I always enjoy playing against the artist formerly known as jungleboy (even when he wins), and this game was no exception. Neither of the expansions (Mage & Witch and King & Robber Baron) were especially heavy but they complimented each other well and made for a fun game with lots to think about.
In terms of league points, I believe it was 3 - 2 to me overall. Nick won more points from roads and cities than I did (with a lot of help from his Mage ::)) but I took more chances on cloisters and was successful in winning the main farm outright which also won me the game. Interestingly, Nick and I were both focussing on roads more than we might otherwise have done; Nick because he was going for the point, and me because I'd won the Robber Baron token and wanted to increase its value with as many completed roads as possible.
Thanks for the great game Nick! 8) :(y)
-
This was my first game of Carcassonne in ages, and my first as the patriarch of Constantinople. I decided to play as black which seemed like a good colour for a man of the cloth, whereas jungleboy always played as green to match the trees that he frequently swung from in his more athletic days.
At the beginning of the game Dan said he didn't bother counting the individual features in this format. I suspect that was a trick to try to get me not to count them while he secretly had five abacuses going at the same time.
I drew most of the M&W tiles which helped bump up my score a bit, especially on roads, which I ended up winning. I chose to close a big city of Dan's while the witch was in it which got me the robber baron and ensured that his score for the city wasn't damaging (although he got two meeples back earlier than he otherwise would have). And I ended up holding on to the robber baron and winning cities, so I think that was the right move.
Despite my position as head of the Byzantine orthodox church, I didn't claim any cloisters, because when I drew them, there weren't really favourable positions for them and/or I wanted to conserve meeples.
Dan did a slightly better job getting onto the main farm but with one tile left, a RCCX tile would have allowed me to tie it, which would have won me the farm points because of my better secondary farm. Instead I got a RRCC tile and completed a mid-sized city with it, which allowed me to win cities.
First impressions are that unless you're going to do a lot of counting during the game (as Dan did with his abacuses), the format doesn't play a huge part in how you play. But it is fun to not really know what's going to happen at the end, and then see the score flash up. Another thing that might play out in a lot of games is that if the game 'descends' into a winner-take-all farm battle as Carcassonne games between equal opponents often do, the winner gets the farm points and the game points, which is 40% of the score. So that aspect of the game is still crucial even though points are spread around a bit more overall.
Thanks Dan and congratulations. Looking forward to the next game!

If this division continues with close matches, this is going to be a very interesting competition. I hope that league A starts livening up a bit in the near future too.
After 2 matches, the table looks like this:-

MrNumbers vs. Nicholas Mystikos
3:2
285:243
Taking a look at the game in terms of the five elements:
Cities: MrNumbers completed a couple of decently-sized cities early in the game and it was obvious from then on that he would win cities comfortably, so I didn't try to counter this.
Roads: Similarly, but in reverse, I completed a couple of pretty big roads early and felt that I had this point won for most of the game. The difference was only four points in the end, so it was closer than I thought.
Cloisters: Only one cloister tile came out in the first half of the game, and I drew it, claimed it and completed it. I later claimed one or two more, and used my abbey in an insta-complete situation to prevent MrNumbers from being able to do the same, because that was the only such hole on the board at that time. So I knew I was comfortable on cloisters.
Farms: It's been ages since I'd played with abbey and mayor (MrNumbers' chosen expansion) so I'd forgotten the strategies of farming with barns a bit. I placed several farmers early on different farms that seemed likely to join up and become the main farm (which they did). I tried to set up a barn placement but MrNumbers is too smart/lucky for that and he got the tile that created the field corner and put his own barn in it. I got some points when my original three farmers ended up connecting to the barn farm, and later got my own barn onto the same farm, but MrNumbers did much better later in the game at connecting his farmers to it when it was worth more. This was the main difference in the farm score and the overall game score.
Game: The scores were very close for the whole game (within 10 points either way). My expansion, Mage and Witch, was pretty much a non-factor because six of the eight tiles were drawn within the first 15 tiles of the game. I was feeling good about winning the game overall until the last third, when MrNumbers started to score big from farmers joining the barn farm. I joined a couple and tried to join more but didn't get the tiles I needed.
Congratulations MrNumbers!
-
Literally nothing to add to what Nicholas Mystikos said :)
The only thing - I shouldn't take these two 6-points farms, I should take some roads instead (and I had such opportunity). But OK, not bad for the first time :D
-
Today I also could play a game, same time - 21:30 CET.

It is good to see that the Premiership is well under way! Here is the table after 4 matches:-

Just to let you guys know that Jere has contacted me over the weekend and has informed me that, due to his new family circumstances, he will be unable to compete. I will not be replacing him at this stage of proceedings, so the league is now reduced to 5 players for this season only.

Despite losing to the Numbers Man, it was victory for me. I think. Sort of.
I won on roads and cloisters by 1 point each, and on cities by 6 points. Giving me 3 points overall. Of course, this means that MrNumbers won on farms (by 5 points), and the game, by 29 points thanks to the King & Robber Baron bonuses which were worth a grand total of 32 points between them! :o
I will admit that it's been a while since I'd last played with Abbey & Mayor but I had a good opportunity to get my barn down first and was focusing on growing it, and adding farmers to it for a handful of points at every opportunity. Things were pretty level elsewhere, but MrNumbers certainly knew what he had to do to keep himself in the game and didn't struggle to do it.
In the early part of the game I seemed to draw a lot of roads (especially straight ones) which I anticipated being of use towards winning the Robber Baron token for the longest road. However, I never seemed to be able to close my roads and MrNumbers was only too well aware of what the bonuses could be worth, so was happy to close them for me on several occasions in order to ensure he kept the RB bonus at the end of the game. Meanwhile, he effortlessly won a battle for the largest city and closed it with his abbey which won him the King bonus too. This came as a bit of a blow, but I was still quietly confident at this point as my barn farm was getting to be quite valuable.
So naturally, defending my barn farm and eliminating any opportunity for MrNumbers to get onto it became my main priority from that point forward. This is why I was so surprised to see him play a very risky move by placing his barn on the opposite side of a road that would be very difficult to connect to my field. I half wondered if that was even his intention, or if he'd just done it as he hadn't been able to place his barn elsewhere and had the opportunity to take 8 easy points for it. I couldn't do anything to slow him down with my next tile, but felt I must have really angered the Carcassonne gods when the very next tile for MrNumbers was the fffr tile that he needed to join his barn onto my barn farm. This was the point that the game win suddenly started to seem very unlikely... :(
I struggled with meeples for much of the latter part of the game as I'd claimed too many cloisters that I couldn't complete. I didn't seem to be getting any useful tiles either though, and had pretty much given up hope until I drew a very timely ccrr tile which allowed me to get back into the game a little. I think MrNumbers' win was secure by this point, but having a few meeples back in hand did at least allow me to threaten him in a few places, not that it made much of a difference...
I was surprised to see just how evenly we were matched on each of the feature types when the score breakdown was displayed at the end of the game, and it goes to show how even just 1 point in the right place can make all the difference! So overall the score was 3 - 2 to me, despite having fewer points overall. King & Robber Baron is rapidly becoming one of my least favourite expansions though... >:(
Thanks for the game MrNumbers! :red-meeple: :(y)

I am free quite a lot this week to play my last two games. Leven and Xanderx12, are you available?
From Thursday evening yes.
OK, let’s try for Thursday then.
I haven’t been following the other divisions. Is the result above the first time someone has gained three points from an overall loss?

I'm pretty sure there have been other 3 - 2s that have gone against the overall points winner, but I don't think I've seen any 4 - 1s as might have been the case if I'd drawn an ffxx tile in the later stages of the game and connected my 0-point farmer to the barn farm.
I'd guess any game with big points bonus expansions like T & B, K & RB or Goldmines could swing the overall victory away from someone even if they did win more points from each of the individual feature types. Likewise, Fairy bonus points, Tower ransoms and Bazaar bids could have a similar effect.
-
I had a 4-1 victory in my first game against JackFace although I lost on points in the regular overall score. (Championship League)
That was the result of my choice for the Goldmines expansion: I was slightly leading in both roads, cloisters, cloisters and cities but JackFace collected far more gold bars than I did, which gave him an 30-points bonus that led to a 11-points victory in the overall score for JackFace.
So it's possible, but I guess you have to have a special expansion that adds points to the overal score like Goldmines, King & Robber Baron,...

I'm so sorry Nick, it was my fault that this game did not happen today. (I was completely lost in an other activity, and somehow didn't recognize Slack's notification about your message. Shame on me.)
How about Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening? Would any of these be suitable for you?

Today I did not forget about our scheduled game, so now I can report another result in the premiership.
:black1-meeple: Nicholas Mysticos vs :violet-meeple: Leven 2:3
I won farms and cloisters while Nick was victious in city and road points.
I have to admit that I had a bit more luck during the game overall. For example, twice in the game I drew cloisters which I could place into fully surrounded holes, gaining easy 2*9 points this way (securing my victory in cloister points, as well). Moreover, I also drew the one and only CCRF tile which left Nick's big follower stuck in a small incompletable city. That gave me a huge advantage in farming, and by using my big meeple I was able to steal a valuable farm from Nicholas.
Thanks for the game, Nick, and good luck in your next game.
-
This was a tough game as I felt the tile draws went against me, and it's hard enough to play against Leven as it is! In addition to the ones mentioned by Leven, I had two meeples (one on a road and one in a city) that were waiting for one CFRR tile to close both features for about 50 tiles. I finally got it on my second last turn, but by then it was much too late to make an attempt at winning farms and/or the game with them. Anyway, congratulations Leven!

Leven vs. MrNumbers
184:209
2:3
Thrilling game, in which I secured the win only with my very last tile! I started with a couple of good cities, blocked Leven's mayor for a while. When he placed his barn, I tried to cut it off from growing up, but failed with that, so his barn became huge rather quickly. I tried to win in cloisters, but didn't draw enough to score these points. I almost lost hope to win, when a saving last tile showed up! :)
Thanks for the game, Leven! Very interesting, as always! :(y)

With 3 matches left, all involving Xanderx12, the table is very close. Leven has completed all his matches and is in top spot.

I tried to get in contact with him on Facebook but he hasn't received my message yet.

@TheSteveAllen: Isn't the thing that you're sorting on - points - missing from the table?
I see points in the last column.
Oh right. I have to scroll right to see it. PD is the last column I see on my screen without scrolling. Sorry for doubting you @TheSteveAllen.

I sent him a PM here last weekend but no reply yet.

If necessary, I can go down the 'average number of points per match' route i.e. divide points by games played, but we are 2 weeks away from that as yet. :(

I've also sent him a couple of PMs but no response. Apparently he last visited the site on 22nd Jan. Hope he comes back soon :(

I might be mistaken but wasn't he a student? I guess he has exams right now then?

I just wanted to ask: what happens if Xanderx12 won't show up till the date? I think it would be fair to eliminate his results from the score table completely.
Second question is, how tie breaks are working. Now according to the rules PD is the first tie breaker. Wouldn't be better to use number of wins as a first tie breaker, and then PD? Just to avoid situations, when you could win all games and be even relegated :o

I am hoping that Xanderx12 will be playing his remaining matches this week, as I note that he visited this forum on Friday and is obviously still alive and kicking.
In the event that he does not appear before midnight on Friday, unfortunately for Leven, his match will be discounted and the final table will be as attached.
MrNumbers would be Champion and Leven would be the runner up in a very disappointing (for me) contest. I was expecting this to happen in the lower leagues, but not in the Premiership containing, as it does, some of our top players.
Thanks, by the way, to Jere for having the courtesy of letting me know that his circumstances did not allow him to compete.

That sounds fair. Plus it helps me avoid relegation, doesn’t it?

I think that relegation is highly unlikely. The premiership might even contain 7 members in the Spring Tournament.

TheSteveAllen,
You're the boss but given the response of the first Tournament, it might be better to stick to 2 Leagues with people committed to play all their games.
And what i'm not sure of: can people change their expansion per season or do we stick to our chosen expansion for a whole year?
Greetings from a fan of this kind of competition. ;)

I am quite happy with this as an idea and think that I should include it in the rules for the new season. Thanks for the feedback Andrew! :(y)

I'm sorry to have to announce this, but for reasons of force majeure I have to withdraw from the competition. At the moment I do not have an interne tconnection stable enough to even play a game. I'm sory a lot people,I haven't been around due to this problem.
