General / The River (III)

So, with the availability of Spiel '14, Darmstadt, Carcassonne 2.0 etc, I think the "new" River tiles are the only ones not available. Is that correct? Is the only place to get those tiles in BB5? Any chance they'd ever be available anywhere else? Just curious.

Thanks!

Official Rules / 2 Questions about Expansion Interactions
« on: December 22, 2014, 06:26:52 PM »
Hey everyone! My wife and I just finished a game and we had two questions come up that I wanted to clarify:

1. When playing with the Wheel of Fortune and the Tower, when the pink pig moves to the Plague section of the wheel, can you remove one of your followers if he's on a tower piece? We played that you could not, because the CAR says "Every player must return 1 follower from a land tile" and the follower on a tower isn't technically on the land tile. Was this correct or incorrect?

2. When playing with the Tunnels and the Count of Carcassonne, at the end of the game, could you redeploy a follower from the City of Carcassonne to a road with a tunnel AND add a tunnel token at the same time? We played that you could not because it technically wasn't a normal "turn". Was this correct or incorrect?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Official Rules / Re: New Complete Annotated Rules

Great work!! Quick question- is the order of the expansions in the CAR chronological of release date? I understand the early ones are, but with Darmstadt, Spiel 14, the New Edition, Halflings, etc. all this year, I've gotten a bit confused as to what came out in what order.

Just wanted to clarify the order is correct chronologically. Thanks!

Reviews & Session Reports / Scored Our 100,000th Point
« on: October 26, 2014, 05:00:18 PM »
So, my wife and I played our 128th game of Carcassonne today. It was one of those especially close games, but I pulled away in the end, winning 825-783. We used the following expansions: The River, Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, King, Count, Cathars, Princess & the Dragon, River II, Tower, GQ11, Abbey & Mayor; Count, King, and Cult; Cult; Cult, Siege, Creativity, Catapult, Wheel of Fortune, Tunnel; Bridges, Castles & Bazaars, Corn Circles. It took about 3.5 hours.

My wife leads the series all-time, 67-60 (with 1 tie). What was even more exciting was that we've now scored a total of 101,009 points (my wife has 51,316 and I have 49,693). I always thought it would be cool to hit 100,000 points, just had no idea how long it would take.

Edit: Sorry, not sure why the picture is upside down?

Do we know anything about general availability? Will they be available from Cundco like the German Monasteries? I feel a little confused...

The other lake included in river II ends in a city so it would encorage further building beyond the end of the river and would not be an issue.

True, my point was simply that I don't like when one branch of the river is very short and the other one gets super long. It doesn't have anything to do with being able to play the game and add to it, it's just the aesthetic of the board. I like when both sides of the river are roughly the same length. I've played games where the lake with the city is the third or fourth tile drawn, and one side of the river gets capped early. You can still play fine, it just doesn't look as good to me.

I'm not sure if the official rules for River 2 are any different but if there are more than one lakes being used I normally play that one of them gets thrown in with the rest of the tiles too.

I think this is right, according to the CAR. You have the normal lake and the volcano lake. The Volcano Lake tile is placed last. We mix the other lake in with the rest of the tiles. As such, it can be pulled any time. Page 60 of the CAR seems to back this up -"The spring tile, the river fork and the lake with a volcano should be separated from the others, while the remaining tiles are mixed and placed face down in a stack."

As the regular lake isn't included in that list, it would be mixed in with the others and can come out any time.

We always play with both The River & The River II. We also use the Spring tile from GQ11. I love the road on that tile, as it helps to break up the fields some.

I honestly can't imagine not playing with the river. In addition to the incredible visual aesthetic, it spreads the board out and gives you plenty of options to start the game.

One thing that sometimes gets annoying is that depending on the course the river flows, it sometimes starts to move off the table. So, on a few occasions, we've had to shift all the tiles after placing the river to center it better on the table. I always dread the one lake tile coming out too early- I just like the game so much better when the right and left rivers are roughly the same size.

We never allow U-turns, so have never had a problem with the placement.

I really, really want to get the tiles from the "River III" to expand the river some more.

News and Events / Re: Carcassonne - new Edition - Is that true?
« on: September 20, 2014, 05:44:46 PM »
It seems to me that the majority of the negativity surrounding this new edition stems from "the fear of the unknown"...

Hey everyone- long time lurker here (I probably check Carcassonne Central 10-15 times a day). This is the first time I've felt compelled to add to the conversation.

I think danisthirty is exactly right here. The biggest problem (and the most frustrating thing for me) is that there's so much we don't know. The biggest problem isn't that they are updating the graphics (of which I am concerned), but that the communication has been so poor. It really makes it frustrating for long-time fans.

I immediately purchase every new expansion that comes out. I'm a guy who actually loves The Catapult. I can't give HiG my money fast enough. What's so frustrating is that there is so little communication regarding expansions like Die Belagerer, The River III, and even this new Abbot one. I don't know whether I need to fork over hundreds of dollars to try and obtain these, or if I should just wait and see if they're available separately.

The same issue is true with this new Edition- we're left with so many unanswered questions, so it makes sense that there will be some negativity and confusion. Many of these issues could be solved by just telling the fans what's going on. Others have highlighted the key questions that everyone wants to know. My biggest concern is that going forward, all new expansions will use the updated artwork. That makes no sense to me.

I hate to pile onto the negativity, but honestly, it's the lack of communication regarding my all-time favorite game that is bumming me out. Hopefully we get some answers soon.....
