Title: Canadian Carcassonne Championships
Post by: rfielder on July 04, 2016, 10:32:05 AM
We just discovered that there is a Canadian Carcassonne Championship going on!

All events are being held at Snakes and Lattess, located at 600 Bloor St West, Toronto, ON M6G 1K4.

Website at http://www.snakesandlattes.com/

National Carcassonne Championships - Regional Qualifier #2 will be held on July 12.  This event is sold out.

National Carcassonne Championships - Regional Qualifier #3 will be held on August 9.  There are still tickets available for this event.  Cost is $10 per person, limited to 16 contestants.  Tickets can be purchased online.

Finals will be held on Sunday August 28.

It would appear that the winner of the Canadian competition will receive a trip to Essen, Germany!

All competitions use the base game only, with no river.

Monwil and I have signed up for the August 9 event.

Best of luck both!

Do you know the format of the competition, is it knock out?

Best of luck both!
Thanks!

Given my track record in competitions here, I will need it!!   :)

The rules are posted on the website.  If I recall correctly, you play three games in an evening, against three different players.  Total scores and - MAYBE, I am NOT sure - score differences are tallied, and the top winners selected.

Good luck to both of you!

I hope this year Canadian representative at least will show up at Essen. Last year he didn't, and that is why I didn't get a chance to participate.

Does that mean that if he/ she does show up this year that you will be able to take part?

That was disappointing to hear at the time. Such a wasted opportunity but we don't know the whole story.

Good luck rfielder and monwil hope you can help create a Canadian champion at Essen.

I just missed the Canadian finals last year by a week due to business travel and no way I can make it out to Toronto this time around, not that I would fare all that well but it would be fun to try  :)

No, unfortunately this year I don't have any chance to participate. Only runner-uppers of current year's national tournaments can get a chance to take part in the Worlds in case amount of participants is odd.

The place is a bit of a pain to get to.  Drive to the Wilson Ave subway station, subway for about 30 minutes, then catch the College streetcar.

Just subway and streetcar.  No bus rides.......

Where are you?  Your profile says only Canada.

We are in Brampton, so getting to Toronto is easy....if fighting Toronto traffic can ever be called "easy"!  :)

Yes, we'll stay in the same apartment in Essen, with the American champion as well. That's what the publisher told me.

Sincerely good luck to both of you!

Calgary, So only a few 1000 K's!

I've occasionally looked at the Snakes website to try and keep track of the championship dates but they have had it at different times. Hope to get there for a final one day!

Monwil and I attended the third round of Carcassonne competition last night at Snakes and Lattes College.

There were 12 players.  We played three games of four people.  A very friendly group of players!

At the end, I came in fifth place.  Only the top six were announced, and monwil did not make that cut.  This was surprising, since she is usually a better player than I am.

My standings were:
First game - Won
Second game - fourth
Third game - second

monwil's standings were:
First game - third
Second game - third
Third game - third

She is nothing if not consistent....  :)

The top two players then played a best 2 out of 3 series to see who the overall champion was.  The winner moves on to the Canadian national championship on Sunday August 28, also at Snakes and Lattes.

It took a long time to get there, driving to a subway station, taking one subway down, transferring to another subway, then a street car, then a 1/2 block walk.  Makes for a rather late work night.  However, we had a great time, got to meet some great people, saw some interesting strategies, played some fun games, and spread the word about JCZ and Carcassonne Central.

Well done to both of you for going the distance to take part, and congrats to you Robert on your finishing position. :(y) It sounds like the competition must have been tough even though there were only a dozen of you taking part.

It's interesting that they only took the top 2 based on the 4-player results, and then made them play best 2 out of 3 to determine the overall winner. Even with just 12 players in the contest I would have thought they would have taken the top 4, but I guess it could have been pretty lengthy if they played up to 3 games at the semi-final and then the final too.

Merit for taking the time to describe your experiences here 8)
