City with Halflings
« on: July 11, 2016, 02:03:26 AM »
Hi, a little question regarding halflings:
if i close a city with the wall (completly), but i have a tringle hole in the middle of the city (caused by halfling), the city is considered close or not?

Thank you very much

Interesting question.

I could not find any specific ruling for this in the official CAR document (found here).

It does allow for a cloister to be counted as comleted, though, and even the abbey tile can be placed having the empty triangle part of the triangle tile towards the abbey tile itself to count as completed.

I also did a little search but could not find any other threads about your question. If there is none, then this is a good topic. If there is, hopefully someone can find it for us, because I'd like to know as well. :)

For now, I would go for "count as completed" which I'd prefer.

Hope this helps!

CAR 7.4, p.15
Quote
A city is completed when its segments are fully encompassed by a city wall and there are no gaps within the city.
With this definition I consider such city (with a triangle hole in the middle of the city) as incomplete.

Ok, but in CAR 7.4 page 152, note 408 "the presence of a Halflings still counts as a full tile with no official gap". So for me is not clear how to consider this kind of tile into a city.

This particular footnote isn't official:

"Interpretations and clarifications of the rules that come from the CarcassonneCentral community (including this author) will be marked with the [globe] symbol".
So I still insist that city in given situation is incomplete.

Originally I think the intention was to consider the city completed.  However, the rules were always vague, last year the 1-tile-rule has thrown this open for debate again.  I think the recent interpretation is it would be incomplete; hopefully this will be clarified at Essen this year.  I may add you question to the list of questions I produced for Halflings & German Castles.

Thank you so much. When do you tell your question? In my opinion if the city is considered "not close" should be too many simple to obstacolate the other player cities. Don't you think so?

Yes, the Halflings cause many problems, because there are too few tiles and too many ways to not complete features, or trap other players.

I don't understand where is the problem and the dubt... for a Cloister if there is an halfling tile it's considered complete, I think is the same fore a city...

The cloister example was overridden at Essen last year.  A cloister surrounded by 16 halflings would score 17 points.

the prblem is a triangle hole into a "wall complete" city. And regarding the road? a triangle hole permit a road to be continue or not?

Excuse me Decar, into the CAR (page 153) is specified that "if there are 2 triangular tiles in the same square space, they still only count as 1 point (together) for scoring a cloister."

This rule has changed?

Excuse me, but the CAR is by no means a definite ruling.  Last year at Essen the Halfling rules were clarified, Obervet stated the rule changes were unclear and the CAR would not be updated until HiG had provided further clarity:

yes, true, I remember the change of rule, 1 half tile = 1 road point, 2 city points 1 cloister point; 2 half tile = 2 road points, 4 city points, 2 cloister points... ok, but remain that 1 half tile or 2 half tiles is the same: there is always 1 tile good to complete any feature or for the dragon movement or other...

Currently it's now undefined.  I hope HiG will consider the implications and provide clarity on these examples.  Halfings produce many problems with many expansions, they all need to be considered.

Yesterday i do some games with my girlfriend and i think is better to consider the city closed only when are entirely closed, without triangle hole. I think is more clear this solution, for the street too. For the moment i play with the classic rule (1 halfling= 1 tile, 2 halflings=1 tile), that i think is more simple with all the other expansion.
