It's been a few months since we last had any kind of tournament here, and now that everyone's settled into the new year I think we should change this by holding the next in our series of Expansion Leagues! We ran the Traders & Builders, Inns & Cathedrals and Abbey & Mayor expansion leagues last year, so now it's time to move on to: The Princess & The Dragon (the classic version where the Princess is smaller than the dragon and has normal-sized hands)...
Full details will come later (depending on how many people wish to play), but for now please sign up below if you're interested in taking part. Everyone is welcome, all you need is something that can run Java and the latest version of JCloisterZone (http://jcloisterzone.com/en/) (3.4.2: click to visit website if you don't already have it), plus an internet connection of course.
Please don't let the fact that you'd rather play properly, in person, up at a table put you off from taking part in an online tournament. You're not alone. But since Carcassonne Central includes Carcassonne players from all around the world there is simply no way that something like this could be held in any other way. As it is though, it's a great way of getting to know other CarcC members, playing a few games against new opponents and maybe even ending up with a trophy (or at least a tile) at the end of it all. Do it!

I don't know about you, but I'm already quite excited by this list of names. 1 unknown quantity and 8 expert players. Plus Rosco. Who could ask for more? ;)
Something I probably should have mentioned earlier, especially for those who are new to JCZ or for who this will be their first online tournament, our chat room is an excellent place to check out if you'd like to find someone to get some practice against. It can be found here: http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html. If you happen to log in and it's empty, potential opponents can usually be summoned by posting a message on this thread (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2109) and then waiting for a few minutes...

Kettlefish will probably join, it's her favorite expansion

Hahahaha. Hopefully for his sake Rosco has more luck with the dragon than with his barn placement on Sunday night!
-
One of my favourite things about Carcassonne Central is having the opportunity to pull Rosco's leg every now and again! :(y)
-
Woohoo another tournament, count me in!

I would like to share the fun and enter my first tournament.
-
I would like to win so I'd better be in!
;)

Its ok Dan is THIRSTY. I intend to practice a lot and actually get to the knock out stages at least!
I will remember your slight against my skills when my dragon devours you.

Bring it on! I'm going to use my gigantic princess to crush your dragon with one tiny hand... >:D :(n) (bad example as this hand looks massive compared to the head)

Thanks for the welcome.
P&D is not my favorite expansion, but I'm going to try to do some training games! :(y)
Hopefully, I'm not going to be a victim to you other players!!

Welcome aboard!
No, not cancelled. But since only two games have been completed since last November it wouldn't be fair to others to wait until if/ when this is finished before starting a new competition. Plus of course, this is an individual tournament rather than a team tournament so I see no reason why the two shouldn't be run in parallel.
Any news on your game? If memory serves me correctly you only have about a dozen tiles left to place?

-
Indeed, I don't think there is a limit.
No limit as such. But we're at 22 now so 2 more players would be ideal as we'll be able to split ourselves into 3 groups of 8 (28 games per group x 3 = 84 games). Or we could stay as we are and play as 2 groups of 11 (55 games per group x 2 = 110 games). Then there will be the final groups too.
Personally I think I prefer three groups of 8 so I'm going to say that we have just two places left to reach 24...

Just texted monwil, waiting for her reply.

monwil says she is interested as well.

Welcome aboard Carcking, rfielder and monwil :) :(y) - this means we're at 25 now. Which could be 5 groups of 5 (followed by 5 different groups of 5 in the second round) or we could hold out for 2 more and go for 3 groups of 9 (followed by 9 groups of 3 in the second round). We'll wait until the end of the day and see if anyone else is interested in playing, otherwise we'll stick with 25 and can start tomorrow...
-
Or go to 28. 3 more people gives 4 groups of 7. Makes the playoffs easier with an even number.
-
My preference for 3 groups of 9 rather than 4 groups of 7 is based on bigger groups = more games per person + increased variety of opposition within each group. With groups of 9, everyone would get 8 games at the first stage and then 2 more at the second stage where we're all split into 9 groups of 3 depending on finishing position within initial group. 10 games per person seems like a good number.

Is there a guide or something that explains how tournaments are played? I get that every tournament is different but I'm wondering how everybody copes with the amount of games and probably the small timespan everybody has available...

Hi Valheru, here are some details explaining how the tournament will work:
1. All players will be divided equally among three different groups. Each player will play one game of Carcassonne against every other player in their group. The winner of the game will be awarded two league points whereas the loser gets nothing. If the game is tied, both players receive one league point each.
2. Games will be played online through the latest stable version of JCloisterZone (currently 3.4.2). Please ensure you have downloaded this and are familiar with its controls and features before the competition begins. It is also recommended that you have played at least one practice game against a live opponent (as opposed to a dead one) in order to identify and resolve any technical problems before your first game.
3. Each game will include the basic tiles plus the Princess & Dragon expansion only (no other expansions please). The starting player should be chosen at random through JCZ by selecting the “Randomize seating order” checkbox on the pre-game screen.
4. It is the players responsibility to liaise with their fellow group-members in order to find a mutually convenient time to play their game. This is expected to be done predominantly through Private Messages. Please keep any appointments you make, or at least give your opponent as much notice as possible if something occurs which prevents you from playing at the agreed time.
5. Assuming we start with a pool of 27 players, each group will contain 9 players so the first stage of the competition will end when every player has played 8 games. At this point, the pool will split into 9 groups of 3 depending on finishing position in their initial group. So, top-ranked players from groups A, B and C will form group D1, and those who came second in groups A, B and C will form group D2. The same will be true for groups D3 to D9.
6. Play in groups D1 to D9 will constitute the second stage of the competition which will run in the same way as the first except with more groups and fewer people per group. This stage will end when every player has played 2 games. Finishing positions in groups at the second stage will determine overall rank.
I hope this helps! :)

It sure does! Merit to you, good sir.

One thing, we found out in our "dream team" match: there seems to be an issue with fairy scoring (the +3 bonus score for completing a feature) in 3.4.2. We all 4 agreed and didn't found it crucial in that game, but I suppose, this should be fixed before starting the EL#4. Otherwise, we might agree on chosing an older version of JCZ, it did work before, after all. Maybe some pre-tournament testing would be needed for that.
-
Could you elaborate on what the issue was? I've only really played against an AI opponent recently and I've always got the +3 bonus points when I move the fairy to a meeple that is in a feature I'm completing with the tile I've just placed. Can't see why it would be any different against an online opponent... ???
-
But it was the case in our game. We noticed it maybe 20 tiles into the game, when I finished a feature and didn't get the bonus +3, tried it again, then came to the conclusion, that we won't go for this points any longer. I think, this was an issue even before we first reloaded the game. Maybe it is a problem regarding playing on online server? I think, we started the game there, and only after disconnection reloaded it on a local host instance.
In case you are free for a test game now, I would be available.
-
In case you are free for a test game now, I would be available.
I am free now :) I'm in the chat room.
-
Just played a super quick test with Dan and we closed three features (one road and two cities) with the fairy and received the bonus 3 points every time. So we're not sure how to recreate the problem that you guys had.
-
I think I've seen this bug but I have a feeling that it's restricted to playing in larger groups.
-
I'm not sure but I believe we start playin the dream team game on 3.4.1 since I had to download 3.4.2 for the final try.
Note that on the first two tries not only JCZ was not showing the 3 points when completing features but it was also not showing the 1point for not moving.
-
Hounk and I just played a 2P practice match with only P&D on 3.4.2 without any problems, so it looks like it's OK for the league. Maybe it's the issue of more than 2 players, or a certain combination of expansions, or the different version issue that Chooselife mentioned.
-
It could even be to do with the fact that a previously saved game had to be loaded? It's a long-shot, but... well... I don't know.
Anyway. One more player, come on! You'll all be excited to know that the initial groups aren't going to be named Groups A, B and C. Oh no! I'm ever so proud of myself for coming up with something even better (and more appropriate for this expansion), but I can't reveal the groups until we have our 27th player.
-
It's dragon names from 'How to train a dragon'.
Or royal princess names?
-
I don't think, it has anything to do with a previous version. We finished the game yesterday on 3.4.2, and I think it would not have been possible to load a save game of an older version.
I think, the issue was in the game, even before first reloading, but I'm not totally certain.

(and yes, I did deliberately allocate the names of the groups so that I didn't have to be a princess or a fairy ;))
For the record, groups were arranged by taking the top 6 players based on Elo rating and splitting them between groups so that the top 3 were all placed in different groups to each other, and 4 - 6 were also placed in different groups to each other (irrespective of who from the top 3 was already in the group in which they were placed). All other names were drawn randomly into one of the three groups with no bias for Elo rating (where known) or location.
Next step is for me to create 3 new topics; 1 for each group, and then link to them here. I'll also post some final notes before I give the go ahead to start playing, so please don't play any games before you've read these!
Good luck everyone! :) :(y)

Good luck to you, and thanks Dan.

Yes, the Princess group that I'm in looks very tough, with not only khalid but also a former World Cup winner (Carcking), another league winner (MrNumbers) and the Dragon Queen (kettlefish) as well as all the other great players.

Hounk, as far as I remember scoring problems with fairy started during our 2nd attempt, and for me it looked like problem with reloading the game...
Dragon group looks interesting... :)
-
About this potential rare bug, we can pay attention to the fairy scoring while we play and if it happens, I think it would be easy to just manually add it to the final scores. Anyway...fingers crossed everything will go smoothly. :)
Good luck everyboby! (y)

From the Fairies thread:
We had issues with the fairy not scoring. This seemed to occur after the game crashed though.
Restarting a crashed game also happened in the Dream Teams game where a fairy bug was reported, so it sounds like this is the problem. What should we do in case of a crashed game then? Start it again from the beginning? Manually count fairy points and add them to the total? Or simply ignore fairy scoring after the crash?
-
I would suggest to ignore after crash or all together
-
I think manual counting is better. We must be as close as possible to official rules of the expansions playing our leagues.
-
I think manual counting is better. We must be as close as possible to official rules of the expansions playing our leagues.
I agree with this, although it may be tricky for some to keep track of.
I think this problem is going to occur most where people have used the online server to host their games as this has been prone to crashing in the past, forcing players to save and reload their games, which seems to cause the bug. It may make things easier if the majority of games are hosted by a third party (or one of the players) wherever possible, especially if there's someone in the chat room at the time who is able and willing to do so. Alternatively, please feel free to drop me a PM if you have a scheduled game and I will make sure that my laptop is up and running and accepting JCZ connections when you need it to. I'm sure there are plenty of others who will be willing to do this too so please post here if you can help out in this way...

Same here. Just PM if you need hosting.
-
Thanks MrNumbers! :(y)
-
In the case of myself and monwil, I was hosting. So it is still not 100% safe.
-
Manual counting might get tricky especially on the not moving points since we will get the focus on the moving wood.
-
With merlin and my game , it counted the points fine after the crash apart from the first 1 point bonus which would have been my 1 point. Since it made no difference to the outcome I didn't make a big deal about it.

Unfortunately this competition has already started, but if you wanted to get some games in regardless of this there are always plenty of people in the chat room looking for people against whom they can play some practice games. If you're interested then please stop by http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html once you have JCloisterZone (http://jcloisterzone.com/en/) installed, let everyone know that you're looking for a game and post back to the forums to let us know how you got on afterwards!

Hi CheekyNuculi!
We've played 3 major competitions in 2015 (3 leagues and the World Cup) so if you are just a little bit more patient, there will be another one coming! My guess is that we'll play with the Tower but who knows... In the meantime, as Dan said, there will be plenty of opportunities to play friendly online games.
-
We're a bit more than half way (61 matches played out of 108 ) and, although participants have played a very unequal number of matches, this provisional ranking could be interesting for some of you.
Elo ratings (as of Feb 2nd 2016 @ 9:00)
Some observations:
- Merlin_89 seems unstoppable and is getting VERY close to Carc Central all-time highest Elo rating: 1417 by MrNumbers during I&C League.
- Talking of MrNumbers, he's back! Currently in 2nd position.
- 4 players JUST behind! Only 4 points between 3rd (1338 ) and 6th position (1334).
- Not a good tournament for zone2 and danisthirty, so far...
- Master Khalid is entering the top 10 in an impressive manner (+55).
-
- Not a good tournament for zone2 and danisthirty, so far...
I knew this much already. Not a good time to lose 2 games in a row...
-
Thanks for the update Jéré!
ELO is cool ... but cruel. I entered this league in 3rd place, and I have increased my points total and overtaken zone2. Yet I'm somehow now down in 5th place! Well done to MrNumbers, jma03 and Leven (and Merlin of course!) for their very impressive tournaments so far!
-
Dan, maybe it's time you start your own Electric Light Orchestra :)
-
I'd need a native English speaker to tell me whether rating should be plural or not.
Elo rating or Elo ratings?
What if I'd use Elo ranking?
Thanks!
-
The ELO Ratings would be the entire table eg: everyone's ratings. But I have a single ELO Rating.
Exactly the same with rankings.
"Here are the latest ELO Rankings"
"Dan's ELO Ranking isn't as high as it used to be".
-
Actually,
"Here is the latest ELO Ranking" is probably what I'd say though, because there's only one table, one ranking. The ranking contains lots of ratings.
-
- Talking of MrNumbers, he's back! Currently in 2nd position.
What a relief! :)
Now I must try not to loose my remaining games 8)

Rankings / Ratings
I would say that my rank is 9th whilst my rating is 1271.
The table contains rankings and ratings.
Now then, MrNumbers, when were you thinking we might play? ;)

Maybe even tonight. I am not sure yet, but I will pop up in the chat room, if I will be available.
Well, our match should be a piece of cake for you.... ;-)
With Princess and especially Dragon you can't be sure in anything. Some very good players (ranked Nr. 7 and 8, for example ;) ) also managed to loose some relatively "must win" games :o
-
Yeah, but I lost all of my games, so it would be a wonder to win against you...
-
Thanks for the update Jéré!

Cruel you say? Before my last game my rating was 1355. With a win I would have had 1364 and be comfortably sitting in 2nd position... But instead I lost and I'm at 1334... A swing of 30 pts!
That being said I'm quite happy with my stats...though I doubt it will be enough to finish first in my group. We'll see!
-
thanks for the update jere¡¡¡
the table elo is a hot spot where it can be very interesting variations...
Jere indeed : besides the Games won....
also influences the difference of points in each game and the opponent that you face?

I wish I'd thought of that! :-[

Score difference has zero influence. You win by 1 point or you completely crush your opponent, it's the same.
Opponent that you face? Yes, it influences a lot.
Your Elo is HIGHER than your opponent:
- Win: You gain a few points. (Ok thanks but that was expected :-P)
- Loss: You lose a lot of points. (Arghhh! Damn it!)
Your Elo is LOWER than your opponent:
- Win: You gain a lot of points. (OMG! I did it!)
- Loss: You lose a few points. (Nice try, better luck next time...)
The bigger the difference, the greater the influence (up to a maximum of 30 pts that you can win or lose for a single match)
-
What if Elo is the same between both players? I know this happened between Merlin_89 and I before he won by the "narrowest of narrow margins" but I forget what this did to our Elo ratings.

The so-called "K factor" which is set to 30 (maximum points you can win/lose in a single match) is splitted in two: Plus 15 for the winner and minus 15 for the loser.

Thanks!

Actually,
"Here is the latest ELO Ranking" is probably what I'd say though, because there's only one table, one ranking. The ranking contains lots of ratings.
Ranking is singular "ELO ranking". Rating can be either as decar said. But the ranking is a person's position i n the table and ratings would be their score.

Thanks Decar, Khalid & Rosco. I think I got it.

The groups in the PD-league "CarcC-A-Dragons" and "CarcC-C-Fairies" have been finished.
Only the group "CarcC-B-Princesses" is still not finished. Two games need to play:
- Carcking / Rich_The_Fisch
- Carcking / Chooselife
-------------------------------------
At this time I have not all participants for the next round in the groups D1 - D9.
I know the participants for the groups: D1, D2, D3, D4, D9
The participants in the groups are not known till now:
D5, D6, D7, D8
------------------------------------
My question is - should we wait for the last two games in group "CarcC-B-Princesses" before we start with the games in groups D1-D4,D9 ?
And should we wait to tell who are the participants in these groups?
-
With any luck, the final two games should be played on Monday & Tuesday next week.
-
Just FYI: Next week, I will be travelling for my work. I could play on my iPhone against Merlin but even though JCZ does not require a full install, I don't want to use my work laptop to play games. I should be available again from Monday April 11.

Are the placement matches using just the P&D expansion? If so we can start playing and finally finishing this League?

When the first stage is finished we will begin the second stage. All being well, that should be within the next couple of days. Sorry it's taken so long to get here; this length delay wasn't anticipated based on previous competitions, despite me doing my best to keep things moving in the right direction...

Since my last game, I've managed to go to Africa 2 times... I'll need a few practice games before the final stage because I forgot how to play this expansion!
Not your fault Dan, you're doing an amazing job, as always. I think people have sometimes trouble to understand the unwritten rules...
Greetings from Casablanca!

Thanks Jéré, but I don't think I'm doing an amazing job at all. Insensitivity to the unwritten rules has certainly made this a tricky contest, but I've been too distracted by several other things I've got going on at the moment to keep close enough tabs on it (or the forums in general)
-
It's been difficult to arrange a suitable time to play my last game which certainly hasn't been helped by the time difference. Unfortunately something urgent cropped up last week when I was scheduled to play and was about an hour late, but my opponent wasn't free to play then. I even offered to forfit the game so as to not hold up the league! Anyway, fingers crossed we can get underway in just over an hour.

Sorry if it sounded like I was blaming you Rich, or indeed anyone. That wasn't my point at all, and I'm sure it wasn't Jere's either...
-
I appreciate the delays, I hope my opponents forget how to play in between games, giving me the edge I need :(y)
-
No worries, just wanted to say that I've tried to play and be available whenever possible (see posts in Princess thread) and find it frustrating too that it's dragging on so long.

Why not write down these "unwritten rules" next time? I'm not sure I know what you mean by this but I assume it is to do with the frequency of playing games.
I think a bit of understanding is needed all round, people have more going on in their lives than Carcassonne and it can be quite difficult to arrange eight international games. It has been 11 weeks since the tournament started, I don't think one game per week with a couple of off-weeks is too unreasonable.
For people who play in lots of these tournaments this might be frustrating, but for newer people like me it is quite off putting to see these backhanded remarks about slow progress. I probably will not compete in any more online tournaments here on the forum.
But to go back to my original point, if there are "unwritten rules" about game frequency then please write them down! If you are expected to play two games a week (or whatever) make that a condition of the tournament with forfeit rules for unplayed games. Either that or accept that things might drag on and be chilled about it.
-
Evidently I’ve annoyed some people with my comment above. Clearly this wasn’t my intention and I apologise for any offense taken. I accept that most of us are busy people with families, work and other commitments, and that playing Carcassonne isn’t always high on our list of priorities. It’s certainly dropped several places on my own personal list anyway, given recent personal events which I won’t go into...
Just to add some clarity, my reference to unwritten rules was indeed surrounding the organising/ scheduling of games between players, and the amount of intervention that is often required in order to make them happen. If others could appreciate the full extent of all the emails and PMs I send and receive in my attempts to keep things moving, or the late nights and early mornings that I endure in order to host games for other players at their convenience (since the online server is still too unreliable) then maybe you’d feel differently about my impatience. I’ve never singled anyone out, and generally speaking I’ve kept my complaints to myself and remained as chilled out as I possibly could whilst trying to be fair to those who have already played all of their games and who have been waiting to move on to the next stage (in one case for over two months but this is an exceptional circumstance).
@JT Atomico: You’re right that it would probably be helpful if the unwritten rules were written down, but I’ve already stated that it is up to individual competitors to arrange their own matches at mutually convenient times; I’m not sure what more needs to be written without sounding too patronising? However, I spoke with my co-organisers several weeks ago about the possibility of imposing time limits on future competitions so that they are completed within reasonable timescales. Nothing like this has been imposed so far as I don’t like the idea of penalising those who struggle to find time to play, but I think this competition is evidence enough that there should be something in place. I’m especially sorry if my comments or attitude have put you off of the idea of taking part in future competitions.
-
Thanks Dan. I just think as long as such rules remain unwritten they will go unobserved, so having some clear deadlines and forfeit rules up front would probably make your life easier too!

Thanks for the update Jéré! :(y)
It was a nice surprise to see myself ranked above jungleboy for the first time in a while, but I guess these ratings will be put to the test when we play our upcoming game. Sorry to see zone2 taking such a tumble too, I guess P & D isn't one of his favourite expansions (or if it was, it isn't any more)... :(

Really thought I'd be in zone2's shoes right now. Said many times P&D is not my favorite expansion. I'm starting to like it a bit more...

Someone would be available for a practice game tonight or tomorrow?
iOS only please (as I can only play on iPad right now).
Dan? JB?

Is 10pm CET OK? I am busy until then.

Yep. Sounds good. It'll be 9pm here. Just create the game when you're ready.
-
How did your game go?
I managed to fit in a game against Jéré via JCZ last night. Sort of. Well, I changed Adda's name to Jéré and had a head-to-head against the AI anyway. Based on this performance, I must say I'm surprised you managed to top your group Jéré... ;D
-
How did your game go?
Jéré won it somewhat comfortably (by about 30-35 points if I remember correctly). It was pretty close the whole way but he was able to use the magic portal to get a second meeple into a fairly large city and close it shortly thereafter (to be fair, he originally had two meeples in it but I used the dragon to remove one of them, so it was always 'his city'). Meanwhile I didn't trap any of his meeples while he trapped two of mine, and that allowed him to commit all his resources to the main farm at the end of the game. So he played it very well and deserved to win.

Just a quick note to say thanks to Dan for organising the tournament and also to kettlefish and Jéré for the stats (and obviously to all those who participated). Whilst my results were somewhat mixed, I did enjoy the tournament even if it did prove rather tricky to schedule a few games. I'd hadn't played P&D very much before, but have got more familiar with it in recent games (despite often overlooking the dragon movement symbol on occasions), I now subconsciously find myself looking for the fairy when completing features even when I'm not using this expansion!!

Gotta love spreadsheets filled with stats. Thanks Jere and Kettlefish
