Beginner seeking help
« on: March 07, 2018, 07:59:59 PM »
Hello, I am new to Carcassonne as I just got the base game a few weeks ago. I instantly fell in love. If anyone knows of a way I could at least get the core 10 expansions to at least complete that part of my new collection, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello!
It is nice to see next Carcassonne enthusiast.  I am not sure if I understand your question correctly, do you look for a place to purchase those expansions?

Yes, either online or a store I could try to find. Thank you

Is there an abbot in your base game?
Well you could still find Carcassonne in all shops, ZMAN is currently releasing all the renewed versions of the big expansions except for the catapult.
So there is one different thing between the old and renewed versions. That difference is the artwork.
If you have an abbot then you have the renewed version ;)

Welcome to the forums zizyx.

Since you say you've only been playing the game for a couple of weeks I'm going to guess that you've got the new edition (the one with new artwork and Abbots). The core expansions are still commonly available for this version of the game both in regular shops and online (Amazon and eBay will be good places to look).

However, rather than looking to get all 10 (or 9 as it will be for the new artwork edition owing to the fact that The Catapult is no longer available) at once I think there's a lot to be said for easing yourself into it one expansion at a time. At least you can familiarise yourself with all the new rules that way, in preparation for your inevitable game of MegaCarcassonne when you do eventually get hold of everything and decide to play with them all at once!

Have fun!

The change in art can be confusing for new players. So what people are asking, before we give advice on where to get expansions, is: do you have the old edition or the new edition?

Check cundco.de first. You can buy many expansions there for the right price. Otherwise, Ebay for more rare ones.

Those will be in German though. Might be an issue for some people.

Since you are form States Cudnco.de may be quite expensive, considering shipping.

Consider Amazon.com or CoolStuffInc:

Hello Zlzyx! Welcome to the forum. I'm a newbie my myself, got hooked on the expansions a couple months ago and I'm nearing (what I would consider) completion. I know you're only asking about the first 10 expansions, but please consider all the strange and beautiful mini expansions and add-ons.

If, like me, you're more interested in play and game mechanics than just collecting, I have a couple suggestions:

1. Try out some of the expansions first virtually on either the Carcassonne app (I use the excellent apple mobile version) or the equally excellent http://jcloisterzone.com/en/

2. Read the element index reviews on this site and see if they jive with your gameplay style. I prefer expansions that enhance the aesthetics and cooperation of the game over elements that simply add points or complicate the scoring mechanic. You can even break up existing expansions into the elements that you're interested in. For example, I just ordered the castle tokens from https://cundco.de/en as a separate element from the "Castles, Bridges, and Bazaars" expansion. I've also ordered phantom pieces, the school, and abbot meeples. I recommend making one combined order to save on shipping costs.

3. If you're in the US, you're going to spend most of your hard earned $ on shipping costs as many of this items come from Europe (especially if you're interested in the old edition artwork). You may be able to find some great deals in Canada or Mexico though (perhaps you can ask a friend to pick something up for you?): mercado libre or www.kijiji.ca.

4. Lastly, try the reddit monthly boardgame market: https://www.reddit.com/r/boardgames/comments/815ih1/the_monthly_board_game_bazaar_march_2018/

I have some extra expansions to sell as well. I'll send you a private message if you're interested!

If you go to the left - you'll find death.
If you go to the right - you'll lose your horse.
If you go straight - you'll live, but will forget who you are.
