I play a handful of dominion games online every day. It's interesting to analyze each player's deck at the end, especially if you lose, to see what you could've done better.

General / Re: tile thickness
« on: March 03, 2020, 12:40:58 PM »
Yes, I've noticed that there are a few expansions that are thicker than the others in CII. I think for me Japanese Temples and 1 or 2 of the others. I have most of the CII stuff, but without having it in front of me, I can't remember which ones are thicker. When I get home I'll confirm. It bugged me for a while, but I don't really pay attention to it. For me, it's only noticeable when I have a full stack of the thicker tiles right next to the regular ones. When they're all mixed up, or in the bag, I can't tell.

I was waiting until mid-August so I could order them all together, but I'm still waiting, so I'm tempted to just order the available ones now and order the other two later. Of course, if I do this, then the next day they'll become available. ::)

The wooden sets left (pink and brown) do not include the ringmaster. I imagine some time in the (hopefully near) future they will re-release all of the colors with the ringmaster included. They just did this with the plastic ones, so hopefully the wood ones aren't too far behind.

I especially like when the carcasses get sucked into the nightmarish grey hellscape! and the water slide. My river will now be referred to as a water slide. :))

Official Rules / Re: Quick flying machines question
« on: May 31, 2018, 02:21:41 PM »
As you stated, it is unnecessary to use the flying machine and die to claim a feature attached to the tile you just placed. I think they were just trying to simplify the rules as much as possible. If they say "You can't use the flying machine to claim a completed feature," then it makes it so much easier, than listing the exception you are interested in. So the answer to your question is that it makes the rules simpler without having to list any special cases or exceptions.

And it was one of the options to one of the questions (BoardGames topic) in today's Pointless Quiz on UK TV ... lowest score of the round, too - not surprisingly
The episode is now on youtube: The relevant clip starts at about 30:00.

Excellent question. In some of the new small expansions, the rules specifically state that you should use these smaller expansions at your own risk with other large and small expansions since the publisher will not clarify any rules for this. That being said, the main problem with mixing expansions is that the added scoring/placement/etc rules compound together and may make it more confusing for some.

The basic guidelines are that you should have only one set of start tiles and discard all others. The base game comes with a single start tile. Other start tile sets include the River, the River II, The City of Carcassonne, The Markets of Leipzig, Wheel of Fortune, and a few others. Of course, many ignore these guidelines and just use whatever they want.

Exp 1 Inns and Cathedrals, Exp 2 Traders and Builders, Exp 5 Abbey and Mayor, and Exp 9 Hills and Sheep can usually be included with any other expansion without any trouble. Princess and Dragon, the Tower, Bridges Castles and Bazaars, and Under the Big Top are slightly more cumbersome with the rules and are usually less streamlined when diluted with a bunch of extra expansions thrown in.

Other small expansions like the Plague, the King, and some of the six minis become very unbalanced when you use too many expansions together. I find the best games for me are at most 2 large expansions and 1-3 small expansions. I like to play with everything too sometimes, but I usually forget steps and miscount scores or miss scoring opportunities entirely when I do this.

General / Carcassonne Expansion Randomizer App
« on: April 09, 2018, 09:46:27 AM »
Someone needs to create a Carcassonne Expansion Randomizer App, so that I can randomly decide what expansions to play with each time I play. I did find a quick work around for this though. I downloaded an app from the Google Play Store called Random Name Picker. In the app I created a list with all my expansions in it. Then I just have to hit the "Choose" button once for a shorter game, or two or three times for a longer game. The app picks the expansions for me. If there already is a Carcassonne Randomizer app out there, just let me know, cuz I couldn't find one. I have no skill in this regard, but I might learn how just for this.

I tried to watch this episode online, but sadly since I'm not in the UK, it's blocked.  >:( I was looking at the bbc.co.uk website. Is it available somewhere else online, that isn't region locked?

General / Carcassonne mentioned in Church Sermon
« on: April 02, 2018, 07:12:47 AM »
So, I was watching the world-wide conference for my church on Saturday and one of the speakers mentioned the town of Carcassonne. My wife and kids were like, "Hey!? What? I thought Carcassonne was just a game!" I had a good chuckle explaining that Carcassonne the game, was named after an actual real place. My sister told me later that she was confused too, since she'd only ever heard the name "Carcassonne" while playing the game with me. I posted the relevant clip here.
There is a link to the entire speech in the youtube description.
