Old artwork: Which expansions are the rarest?
« on: July 02, 2020, 11:20:39 AM »
I know about The Plague and Tunnels, also Belagerer but I'm wondering what other versions are very rare, or the rarest.

The Plague is not really that rare, although it is true that the price became higher recently.

Historically rare and pricey expansions have been Crop circles I, Cathars, and nowadays Darmstadt. (+70 point score track though not an expansion.)
But THE rarest expansion ever produced in the old artwork is without a doubt Russian promos (especially the 2nd wave).

What about the old edition of German Castles and Halb so Wild? Are they rare?

Halflings I is easy to find... Halflings II is more rare. And also Cathars, The Tunnel, The Plague,...

German castles is not that rare yet. Crop Circles I, Besiegers and Darmstadt are very difficult to find.

From time to time you may see the 2-tile set of Russian Promos for a crazy price. But I agree the 4-tile set of Russian Promos from 2016 is the most difficult to find.

There are lots of rare and valuable Carcassonne items now, I tried to describe most of the ones I could think of in section #25 of the FAQ here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=4621 .

I was discussing with DrMeeple yesterday if anyone has an original La Porxada... It was only a sticker on another tile so  I think it is almost impossible to detect if you have an "original" one...

I agree. It's hard to imagine that any are even in existence any more. I'd love to see how much one would sell for it was found and verified though!

Realistically I think home-made Porxada tiles are as close as most people are going to get to adding this expansion to their games. Even better if they're signed by KJW :)

I have always wondered this myself. I guess the only originals that could be identified are the ones whose pictures we have on bgg (KJW sign and everything). Well calling it the original is a bit of a stretch though as La Porxada essentially became a print and play expansion, even though it was originally not supposed to be one. These "originals" being stickers, were already print and play, so there is no real difference between that and a homemade version, aside from who applied the stickers :D. Nowadays, your average homemade La Porxada is way better quality than these "originals". In my opinion they are no more original than homemade copies (but I would still buy one if given a chance  >:D)

It's not old Art work, but by price on auctions and shops, the highest price has Darmstadt promo. And when you check price per tile, Darmstadt is definitely most expensive.
Check JCloisterZone Add-ons with fan expansions and also some Slovak sci/fi projects in English https://www.scifi.sk/en/

Darmstadt is old work, so it counts.

What whaleyland said and while it is true that in recent 4 - 5 years Darmstadt jumped up to Crop circle I levels in price, it still cannot rival Russian promos.
I doubt anything ever will (unless 3rd wave off russians is produdced  >:D)
