What is your best matching pair of expansions
« on: July 12, 2014, 07:16:02 AM »
Which two expansions best go together for a great game? Official expansions only. (I'll try to add pairs that people suggest.) You can change your vote etc.

I thought it was close enough to being official to count.

If you want to suggest one you need to post a reply so I can add it to the options.

Many of these expansions are somewhat rare, albeit still obtainable but not for the average fan. This makes the options pretty much dead for most of us.

A poll should offer the common expansions rather than the smaller sets, even if there is a free option choice.
World record holder for a single game of Carcassonne using 10 007 tiles!

I really don't get it. This is carcassonnecentral.com. I don't even own German Monasteries but I am happy to comment on them.

The poll asks for my best matching pair of expansions.

As I love to participate in polls amongst other things, I feel left out because I can't give a fair estimate to half the choices as I do not own them.
Maybe a little note somewhere on the poll letting us know some of these are rare could be made. That would give the poll a more fair evaluation.

The River II/Princess & Dragon. I never play one without the other.

Added. Curious. That is one I would not have thought of.

Cool idea for a topic but I also find the given options to be a little strange (and heavily reliant on the minis).

A few of my choices are:

Inns & Cathedrals / Traders & Builders - Fairly obvious but I think these two complement each other so nicely. The combination of cathedrals, the big meeple and the builder can make for epic cities and city battles.

Traders & Builders / The Count - both involve finishing features controlled by other players so it seems obvious to play them together.

Inns & Cathedrals / The Ferries - both make roads more interesting and potentially valuable so they go well together.

The Tower / German Monasteries - the abbots are so valuable (usually scoring about 18-25 points each in the games I've played so far) that it would be nice to be able to remove them, and with both these expansions involving the spreading of tiles horizontally/vertically it seems like a good match.

Great. Someone sees it as well. I have added your options and reset the vote counts. I wonder if I had actually set up the poll with no options at all that would have caused less consternation.

I could allow multiple votes but I am not sure if that would improve things. I'll give it a go.

Well, the volcano tile in the River II gets the dragon on the board straight away and avoids the possibility of dragon tiles being drawn before the first volcano tile. I'm not sure there's anything else in particular that makes them go well together.

My wife and I played with Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders last night. These go so well together that it almost feels a shame to play one without the other. We played with the River (1) as well just to spread the start out a bit as things get too competitive too quickly otherwise. We also played with the phantom, but this goes pretty well in most games.

Apparently I am the only one to have actually voted so far!

Thank you for the poll update!

Inns and Cathedrals with Traders and builders has always been my favourite and constant. With these two, I can add any other expansion, mini or not, if others that I play with wants it.

My reason for choosing mage&witch/messengers is that this combination seemed to lead to a very high level of game.
