I believe he meant dimension wise, aka bigger/ smaller/ same size as Carcassonne tiles :)

Aha right. Now I see, sorry.

I'd say they were somewhere between being smaller and a bit bigger than Carcassonne tiles. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that great report @Decar - it was interesting to read about all the things you stopped to explore which I'd only really seen in passing because of the time-pressures caused by the Carcassonne championship. Glad you had such a good time, and congrats on your awesome haul! :(y)

What size are the beacon patrol tiles?

Square size.

Hope you have a great time there! I'm hoping to arrive by 9 on Saturday so should have a couple of hours to look around before the championship begins...

Official Rules / Re: Shared points for a city
« on: June 01, 2023, 08:45:03 AM »
Hi @Gwendoline and welcome to the forums!

I'm not sure I completely understand the question either I'm afraid, but will echo what others have pointed out that the only rule regarding tile placement is that the landscape features must match against any tile that the placed tile is adjacent to. Field against field, road against road, city against city. Just because a tile exists that would join your partner's meeple into your city doesn't mean that you should have to place it there! Instead, you could use it to make a hole there. Some people don't like these, but you might discover more and more of them creeping into your games as you start to play more competitively!

Enjoy! :) :(y)

Happy birthday Decar! Sorry we didn't manage a surprise visit, but hope you had an awesome day!

I'm pretty sure it came out already... On April 1st!

Oh I thought the joke was only for the pink edition but they were still actually making a special edition.
So does that mean I am wrong and the joke is for the whole thing? In other words, is there not actually coming out a special 40th anniversary edition?

Correct. The joke is the whole thing. It was referred to in the message from HiG on 01/04 that there had been a vote, which Pretty in Pink had won. The intention was that the joke would seem more realistic if there had actually been a vote, which is what this was. Pretty in Pink was never going to actually win it, but the results were hidden until mid-day on 01/04 so it was still vaguely plausible.

Sorry for any confusion. It was a bit involved.

EDIT: probably worth pointing out that the Pretty in Pink version did actually capture the imaginations of a few people who liked it enough that they were prepared to fan-make it!

Other Games / Re: So I did a thing ... need advice ...

Hey gantry. That sounds like an exciting direction to be heading in. Wishing you every success with it!

I'd like your opinions on whether I should build my own official community around my games.

Pros:

  • It is a place where I can offer official answers to player questions
  • It provides players with a place to share ideas and build excitement for the games
  • I will be able to offer gamification to encourage players to return to the community, and perhaps get bonus material for the games

Cons:

  • It takes a lot of work to run and maintain, whereas putting stuff out on social media is easier
  • It will add to the cost of running the business
  • If the games do not become popular enough, the community will likely migrate to BGG or somewhere else and my time and effort will be wasted

If you believe that I should build my own community, what should that look like? A structured forum like Carc Central, or a less structured free-for-all place for discussions like a Facebook group or something like Hivebrite/Circle.so (assuming you know what those are)? I should add that I am very much mobile-first, anything that I build will work on your mobile phone or tablet as well as on any computer.

Feel free to provide any other comments or suggestions!

I think a lot of what you've suggested makes good sense and could be beneficial, but the timing is also important. For example, none of the pros on your list are really relevant until you've already published something that has attracted a fanbase, otherwise who is asking the questions you want to answer/ sharing ideas/ seeking out the cool promos? Touching on what Bixby already said, boardgaming is still very much a niche thing and whilst there's a lot I don't like about BGG (the interface and the snobby/ elitist attitude of almost everyone I've had any interaction with there) I still feel that it serves as a good starting point to build a fanbase before moving onto something more customised.

With regards how you implement it when the time is right, I do think that Facebook groups and Discord offer a lot in the way of keep people engaged and showing "life" within your community. But they're not very searchable and if you intend to share something in the way of a FAQ, or downloads, or ongoing debates covering a multitude of different topics I feel that a platform such as CarcC is quite effective, despite seeming a little dated now.

So in summary, I'd suggest starting on BGG to let people know about your games, then moving to social media/ Discord (or both?) as soon as you feel you've built enough a sustainable fanbase and actively seeking to grow it, then finally moving to somewhere like this if things have gone well and you're prepared to to spend the money/ do the work.

Hope this helps! :(y)

Great write-up Willem. That was a wonderful way to spend a Friday! +1 merit of course...

I'm so glad that you had your hoody zipped-up in the photo so nobody could see we were wearing matching t-shirts ;)

General / Re: Do you use house rules?
« on: April 14, 2023, 09:01:05 AM »
The only house rule we play is regarding unclear clarifications:

If players are willing to argue about the interpretation of rules, they must also be willing to fight to the death over it.

We solve a lot of problems that way, the games are much shorter, although you do run out of people to play with.

It's hard to believe that the "fight to the death" rule used to be in the official rules, albeit as a mistranslation. Still, it's what we used to play when I first got into Carcassonne so we've just gotten used to it. Call me a purist, but it just doesn't feel right trying to settle anything in any other way.

Also happy for it to be allowed to continue to function as is. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

And please try to keep it friendly. We're allowed and expected to disagree with other on a forum like this, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't respect each other too.

Do they really believe that people are interested in buying the x th version of the base game??
I actually am.

As some of you may already know, HiG are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and I've heard directly from HiG that they would like to create a special limited-edition version of the Carcassonne anniversary edition to commemorate this important milestone in the company’s history! What makes this even more special is that on this occasion they’ve decided to reach out to Carcassonne’s fans so that we can be involved by showing our support for some of their existing ideas (through voting), or even suggesting our own themes!

I don’t have much in the way of detail so far, but I do know that they are seeking similar input from their partners and other fan-communities, and that they are hoping to make some kind of an announcement regarding this in late March/ early April so it’s still early days but we can expect them to move quickly after this. They're being a bit secretive (as usual) and this is as much as I know for now, besides the potential themes upon which I’ve been asked to gage your opinion along with any thoughts/ suggestions you may have of course (post below)...

General / Re: What is your favorite tile in the basegame?

If I'm the starting player, this is always the tile I hope I'm going to draw, especially if I also get a city cap on my next turn. Great way to start the game!
