Title: We organize a game now?
Post by: quevy on January 04, 2015, 09:37:16 AM
I created this topic reference for organizing matches at the last minute.
The introduction of the fixed server by Farin facilitates this.
I hope that many games can be organized from now on.

I'll play with you, if you can host.

Edit: unable to connect to the chat room for some reason.

I have never hosted a game. But let's try. I do not have a static IP, though, so maybe it won't work. Which expansions would you like to have? My suggestions would be I&C, T&B, River II, Cult, Siege, and/or Flying Machines, NOT any of the other big expansions, since I'm not familier with them yet.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: jungleboy on January 10, 2015, 07:12:10 AM
Those expansions are fine for me. But I think you need a static IP, which is why I can't host.

Sad,but let's try anyway. My I.P. is 46.207.177.241 right now. Can you see me?

Thanks for the game. Somehow the return button does not work now in the chat line in JCZ, so I could not post a message there.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: jungleboy on January 10, 2015, 08:35:59 AM
Thanks to you too. You can't chat inside the game once the game has finished, so that's normal.

But most importantly, we were able to connect and play without a static IP! Each move was a tiny but slower than normal for me, but still, this is quite a breakthrough, isn't it?

I did not know in the first place, that this might be a problem. But yes, it worked really fine with me. Do you (or does anyone else) want an other game right now?
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: danisthirty on January 10, 2015, 09:52:05 AM
Sounds like you guys are having fun! I don't know if you saw, but the latest beta version of JCZ allows for playing over the internet using a dedicated server. Meaning neither player has to host. Quevy and I tested it last week and it seemed to work pretty well...
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: Hounk on January 10, 2015, 10:41:45 AM
We had fun, but just once. Sadly, we could not connect a second time and don't know, why. So probably we should check out the beta next time. The T&B tournament will not be played with the beta, though?

Does anybody wants a game right now? I am not sure, if I can host it with my not static IP, though. Best would be, if at least one player, who is used to host games, joints. Otherwise I still can try.

Maybe I'm lacking the proper etiquette but I often connect to the mIRC channel and while I wait someone to appear or end it's game I get called to the usual family emergencies and end up missing the replies.

Depending on the emergency (in diaper or out of diaper for example) sometimes I don't have the time to disconnect.

Don't take it badly as it already happened to more than one of you.

Not much of a big help but you can type /away followed by reason as to why going afk. Unfortunately it won't show nor be obvious until you left-click on that users name in the name list and choose Info, where you can see the away message.

Else you can just type in chat afk like any other chat these days, for the instant-going away from the computer. I often click my own name and rename myself to Paulafk or something.

It's also worth reminding everyone again that you can get someone's attention in the chat room by typing their full name, correctly spelled, with no punctuation. This will notify them.

Congratulations on the victory, but I was not able to understand why when you have entered the incrochio that closed your way and the way of the cloister you have not entered the follower on that road, you had four additional points, you made the same type of thing when you collagato your follower to field with the tile rrrr.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: Hounk on March 28, 2015, 08:05:24 AM
Your right about the road with the cloister, this was a weird mistake of me. But I did not do the same mistake with the RRRR tile. Pity only, we did not play with phantoms, so I could only choose one of the two 4 point roads to be completed and I picked the outer one. Did not plan to make a screenshot for this base game only. But just, so the people can know, what we are talking about, I do it now.

I must say, it was a tight game. When you finished the biggest city, I thought my only chance would be, if I outwin the big farm. In the end, you managed to get equal on it, but just because I could win back and finish the other big city, which looked much smaller, but was actually just two points less worth.

Game with aenima played on Sunday 12/04:

This game was all about the farm. I was first to claim it with two or three meeples as several good opportunities came up to place farmers. I was also very lucky with a small (14-point) city that aenima twice tried to steal from me with his double-meeple and twice I drew a tile to shut him out! Aenima responded well in the farm battle and soon we ended up with four, then five farmers each (including both double-meeples). I then got an extra farmer on and so was winning the farm by one until aenima finally matched me with one of the last tiles of the game for an equal share. But by then neither of us had any meeples left, so with the scores in my favour, a tied farm, a tied city and aenima's two remaining meeples trapped in uncompletable cathedral cities it was a favourable result for me! Well played aenima!  :(y)

Game with Leven played on Monday 13/04:

This was a great game, and even though I managed to trap one of Leven's meeples from a very early stage, it came down to luck in the end with the winner being determined by who would draw the cccc tile. As it happened, I drew it as my last tile, although it would have been interesting to see what might have happened if Leven had drawn it as I think I may still have stayed ahead but by literally just 1 point. Thanks Leven!  :(y)

I've played my 1st online game with danisthirty - only the base game.
I had no choice - always the wrong tiles for me and the correct ones for danisthirty.
Even if I got a correct tile - but I didn't use it, because danishirty would become back two more followers - not good.

the score was: danisthirty 124 - kettle 85

Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: danisthirty on April 17, 2015, 03:18:36 PM
(http://www.dan.tehill.net/kettle_scores.jpg)

The game was mostly fairly even despite kettlefish's run of not very useful tiles. Two features made the biggest difference, and these were the 24-point city (9 tiles + 3 pennants) and the 20-point road. I won both of these outright and won the game because of them.

Well played kettlefish!  :(y) :)

Thanks also to Chooselife and Rosco for the games I played against them too. I played Chooselife twice and we won and lost one game each (I didn't record the scores but Chooselife may have them). My game against Rosco was a bit crazy but ended in a victory for me: 108 vs 69...

my 2nd online game today.

Chooselife 85 - kettlefish 106

We should play a game at some time, too, kettle. Since you seem especially into base game, how about joining Decar's ladder? Right now I couldn't play there anybody anyway, because only Rosco and Paul (TPFKAY) could be challenged by me, and they have a challange running between themselves.

Today I had a friendly game with danisthirty and Chooselife.

Base game

the strategy was:
friendly - build together a big city - each player with only one follower in the feature.
No hard fights no hard block the other players.

At the end of the game I had 2 meeples left in my supply - I don't know why - but I didn't place always a meeple.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: kettlefish on April 27, 2015, 02:31:20 PM
here are some comments from our chatroom:
before the game:
Quote from: 'kettle'
I like to play a chaotic base game - like: we all claim a city together and build it - only with one meeple each

after the game:
danisthirty: that was a very different game. it's weird when you play in a friendly way!
kettle: really nice game - all without big fights
danisthirty: but I think people will be shocked when they see that you still have 2 meeples left...
kettle: nice big farm and big city - but I can't get into your road
danisthirty: the road was only worth 7 points
Chooselife: I'm not a sour looser but its strange no playing to score
danisthirty: but we each had one end of it so impossible to get someone else on.
danisthirty: yes, it was definitely strange. but enjoyable. like when I used to run. sometimes I would run as fast as possible but pace myself carefully so that I could still finish the race. other times I just jogged along and stuck at the back. I always enjoyed it whatever I did.
Chooselife: indeed

Dan and I killing some time, we tested base game with the Goldmines mini expansion. In itself this expansion works rather well.  :(y)

With my last attempt of 50/50 to conquer the big farm which failed, Dan won the game. It was a gamble on my part and maybe I had won if I had taken the time the last four turns to see easier targets to score.  :)

Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: danisthirty on April 30, 2015, 07:16:22 AM
I’d just like to reiterate how close this game was. Paul and I were fairly even in terms of score until he completed a cloister and a road with the same tile and quickly built up a 20-point lead which I struggled to claw back no matter what I did.

My only saving grace was a huge city that we fought over quite fiercely but which I eventually won with 3 knights against 2 of Pauls (plus 2 which he never managed to join on). This ended up being worth 21 points for me and since we were tied on almost everything else (1 farmer each on a 15-point farm, 1 each on a 6-point farm and 1 each that we both failed to join on to the 15-point farm) these points made up for most of my deficit.

The gold really made a difference as we seemed to claim this fairly evenly and for much of the game had 5 pieces each. I ended up closing a road and claimed an additional 3 pieces in the process which gave me a 14 point lead since my 8 were worth 3 points each (24) and Pauls 5 were worth 2 points each (10). So, a fairly hefty bonus for me simply for being lucky enough to draw a tile that could be used to close a road off!

Thanks for the game anyway. I really enjoyed it.  :(y)

Looks, like you did pretty good, as well on farms. Also connected at least two farmers for 9 points, which is really well in a game, where one barn covers 4 cities, the other one 5. Hope you start getting the taste for this expansion, you'll see, after getting some practice, it can be pretty fun.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: kettlefish on May 16, 2015, 03:44:05 PM
Yes - danisthirty played very friendly with me, and the tiles were good for me too.
Danisthirty's almost last tile was that one on the right corner in the botton of the map. With this tile he put my two farms together and I got some less points...
All the time we were not able to place the Abbey tiles.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: danisthirty on May 17, 2015, 01:22:14 AM
I think this was the first time I've played Abbey & Mayor without using either my Abbey (there was never an opportunity to place it) or my Mayor! I certainly enjoyed the game though, and it was very close throughout.

I placed my barn at the first available opportunity and then spent the rest of the game trying to increase its value. Other than a city of mine which kettlefish glommed onto, there was no aggression at all and we mostly just left each other to our own thing. This said, as kettlefish pointed out I did merge two of her farms with one of my last tiles as she was scoring two of the cities twice as separate farms. This got me 4 or 5 points for the road and robber her of 6 points for the farms which made all the difference in the final scoring!

Great game. I'm all geared up for the league now!  :)

Great game with jma03/ jacobo, jungleboy/ jungleboy and kettlefish/ kettle:

The best thing about it was this road which I inexplicably fell in love with even though it wasn't mine. I did manage to get my barn in the middle of it though. Nice.

Thanks for the game guys. I really enjoyed it!

Since I can dictate my own availability for my teaching and examining work, I always say I am unavailable on Friday afternoon just because I don't want to work then :)

Great spot you've found for your barn, Dan. Congrats for this achievement. :)

I think he was so desperate to place his barn that he just put it there even though he already knew at the time he placed it that there couldn't be any more than two cities in the farm. I think he also wanted to become part of the legend of my road any way he could.

Hey, it's OK if you're too scared to play Carcassonne with all the cool kids and have to pretend to be at work instead. No problem.  ;)

Great spot you've found for your barn, Dan. Congrats for this achievement. :)

I know. Awesome right?  :)) To be honest, the way it was going I didn't think I was going to get to place my barn anywhere so I put it down there just because I could, even though it also gave jacobo 6 points as he already had a farmer in there.

Here's a screenshot of just my barn:

Well, Leven beat me yesterday in a game, where he placed his barn inside a loop, which he completed with the tile of that turn. This also featured just 2 cities, plus one of Levens farmers, so he made a total of 14 points with his barn, which was way better then maybe having no option for the barn later on, and therefor a good strategy.

As well as the 4-player game with jma03, jungleboy and kettle I also managed to get in a couple of head-to-heads today too. I'm posting them here for the sake of completeness and because another of Carcassonne Central's legends has come out of the woodwork as a result!

danisthirty vs jacobo (jma03) (base game + Inns & Cathedrals)

This game felt very evenly balanced and really came down to the wire. jacobo perhaps over-invested in the northern farm which was the first farm to emerge and this gave me a better shot at winning the southern farm which ended up being more valuable (as well as a 9-point farm in the middle which I never managed to merge with the southern farm). I only just managed to keep my share in this as he outfarmed me with his double-meeple and it was purely down to good luck on my part that I was able to tie it with one of the final tiles of the game.

Dan vs Chris (CKorfmann) (base game only)

This was CKorfmann's "gentle" introduction to the world of Carcassonne Central's online play using JCloisterZone. The game felt like I was playing myself as Chris did exactly what I would have done 90% of the time. However, the tiles always seemed to be drawn in my favour and the result of this was that the final scores in no way represented how close the game had been or how hard fought the game was. Well played!

Dan vs Chris (CKorfmann) (base game + GQ11, King & Robber Baron + The Phantom)

Chris closed the big city in the middle after a short battle which got the game off to a good start. This won him the King tile which he kept for the rest of the game but I managed to win the Robber Baron and the two balanced each other out almost exactly. This was a great game for me as I always seemed to draw what I needed and never seemed to run out of meeples. The fact that I won the two main farms by 3 farmers against 2 in both cases wasn't enough to guarantee me the game but Chris struggled to fight back as I was quite vicious in my trapping of his meeples. So even though he beat me by 34 points from cloisters (after drawing all but one of them!) the tiles drawn denied him any opportunity to overtake me...

I had yesterday also some online games - friendly games with base + Abbey&Mayor.

First game was with AndrewTheAmbo

For AndrewTheAmbo was it a test game for training.

With the tile (green) I was able to join the farms with the barns.
In total - the tiles were much friendly for me.

and here is my game with Jéré. - base game and Abbey&Mayor.

Here I have to say - Jére was lucky to get all tiles what he needed to claim into my big city and he got the mayority of it and he block my Mayor...

And he was happy to get the very last tile to join with his barn farm into my barn farm.

Well, if one can claim merits for posting screenshots of barns then here I present you my barn from our league game with Hounk. :)
Although the barn only scored 8 points at the end of the game for the 2 cities, a very important aspect of placing it here was that my two farmers could return to my supply (besides those other two from the completed road and cloister), and it gave me a big advantage in the final stage of the game. (At this moment I had 6 followers while Hounk had only 3.)
Title: Re: We organize a game now?

It also scored my wagon on the road leading from the left branch of T, worth 7 points, and the farmer below scoring 8 points, as well as the thief for 7 points, would have scored and returned to you anyway, but I agree, that the placement of the barn was absolute the right thing to do in this moment. After all, it nearly doubled the worth of your barn, gave you an extra farmer back and it was doubtfull, you could have get the oportunity to put your barn down somewhere else for better profit.

Great, you put the moment of scoring onto a screenshot. :D

Yes, Dan was very kind to relinquish blue for me.  I play blue so often that it's hard for me to remember I'm not blue when I have to play a different color.  I think I have lost games before making bad moves thinking I was blue...

At any rate, I'm glad I finally got to try out JCloisterZone.  Kudos to the developer!  Thanks for the introduction and special invite (Dan & kettlefish).  I knew I was rusty, but I told Dan to do his worst!  I needed to see where I really stood.  I actually played a MegaCarc game against one AI player last night.  It was fun.  I won by a lot, but I suspect it's not too hard to beat the AI.  They fight pretty hard for the big cities, but not too hard for the farms.

I'd be glad to play with anyone.  I'm usually up fairly late and am available after 9:00 NY (EST) time.  Shoot me a message if you'd like to play.
Title: Re: We organize a game now?
Post by: Hounk on May 24, 2015, 12:55:00 AM
They fight not at all for farms. They place farmers, whenever they have a spear meeple and see a city worth at least 3 cities. On one occasion, I saw Adda sneaking into one of my farms, but I'm not sure, whether that was an accident or not. However, AI is still great for getting a little practice with the rules and tiles of individual expansions, so I would like, if it was available for more expansions.

Hope to see you soon in one of the next Leagues or one of the "Weekly Online Games".

Of course you are right, only one of the 4 followers returned to me thanks to my barn. It was your barn that triggered the scoring of my other farmer.

This may not be the right place for this, but since it seems one of the aims of this topic is to try and get more to play online I figured I'd give it a try.  What is the best way to find games online?  I have Jcloisterzone, but every time I try to join a game I don't have the correct password.  I've joined the chatroom, but it seems like nobody is ever there.  Is there another place I should be going to?  Or am I just going at the wrong times?    Sesquipedalian :green-meeple:

Hi,

I'm quite new to the forum so my ideas might seem raw.  JCloisterZone is not a meeting place. People agree to meet to play. A lot of people play peer to peer rather than via the server. There is a view that it is more reliable. Pairs need to play via the server or some other player if they don't have the technical skills to adjust their router.
The IRC chatroom is a place to meet. Most of the day there is no one there because I think lost of people work and have other things they are doing apart from Carcassonne.  The best time to find people is mid evening, central European time.
Many games are organised directly by posting in this thread.
Let me know when you want to play!

Khalid!

Khalid, thank you for providing an excellent reply!

JoeSesquipedalian, thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts, I would like to expand on some of the things Khalid has already said.

It is true that JCloisterZone does not really provide a full chat support.  It is useful to talk prior to the start of a scheduled game; but not ideal to wait for long periods.

We have been successfully using an IRC chatroom for quite some time, you can access here (thanks to Paul):
http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html
Many people frequent here; so if you're looking for a chance game, this may be a better option for you; though European evenings are the best time for most people.

We also schedule weekly-games on Thursday evenings, you're very welcome to join us. Results from previous weeks can be found here:

http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1041.msg29075#msg29075

You're very welcome to start your own thread here, if you are looking to play particular expansions etc.

Hi JoeSesquipedalian, welcome to the forums! :) :(y)

I was going to say pretty much the same thing as Decar. However, it’s probably also worth pointing out that if you are looking for an opponent, posting a message in this thread is a good place to start.

As it happens, I should have a couple of hours free this evening so I’d be up for a game if you’re interested? I’m in the UK so it’s 10am right now. I’ll be available between 8pm and 10pm, so in about 10 – 12 hours.

I’ll be in the chat room between these times so you’ll be able to find me there, but please let me know either by Private Message or by responding here if you’d like to play.

Hi again Joe, it’s a shame you didn’t respond to my message here to say that you were going to be coming on a bit later as I could have stuck around for a bit and had a game with you. As it was, the chat room was fairly busy between 8pm and 10pm last night so I got a couple of games in anyway.

If you know you’re going to be free for an evening, it’s probably worth posting beforehand so that others know there will be someone available, and when. If you post once you’re already in the chat room waiting, it’s less notice for potential opponents to meet with you for a game, hence you’re less likely to find someone.

Hi all,

As preparation for my tournament this weekend, it'd be great if we could play some 4-player, base-game only games this week. Let's fix a time of 22:00 (10pm) CET (9pm UK) for this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. Anyone who's interested and available on any (or all!) of these nights can show up in the chatroom and we'll see if we can make a game. If we don't have four players, we can still play :)

Cheers,
jungleboy

Hi Rickk.

I would be free for a game this evening around 8pm UK time if you're interested and free then?

Oh, and also, are we talking about JCloisterZone or some other method of play?

Almost 7 months since somebody last posted here! Sad times :(

That aside, is anyone interested in a game (on JCZ) at some point today?

I will see if I can get time this evening if you are interested. Can we include the count?

I didn't think your JCZ worked anymore? But OK, yes that sounds like a nice plan.

In the meantime, if anyone is available before then I am currently sitting in the online lobby trying to entice a bunch of broken/ disconnected spam bots into playing against me. Not having a lot of luck. And it's a very slow day at work, so please feel free to stop by for a game! :(y)

Unfortunately about to head out.

It's OK. I understand that the prospect of playing me at Carcassonne can be pretty daunting for some... :@

So was mine, obviously. Off out for a curry, otherwise you could have proved me right.

It must be months since I last played on jcz.
