Idea for a Future Variant CAR
« on: May 11, 2014, 07:30:07 PM »
The CAR has been around for a long time and I just realized that we need another, slightly different CAR. A companion CAR, if you will. Unlike the current CAR that organizes everything according to expansions and release dates, we should organize an alternate CAR that is organized by expansion component, or mini expansion. I mean, once you have a lot of expansions, you end up playing with what you like. I suggest we offer an alternate CAR, even a simplified version, that organizes expansion elements alphabetically. The base game remains the same, but everything else is parsed out. So you have something like:

The Abbey
The Barns
The Bazaars
The Besiegers
The Bridges
The Builders
The Castles
The Cathars
The Cathedrals
The Count
The Cult
The Dragon (with the Fairy and Volcanoes, since they're dependent)
The Ferries
The Flying Machines
The Gold Mines
etc...

Any opinions regarding this suggestion? I think it would project to the Carcassonne community that the game does not always have to be played with a whole expansion, but that individual elements are allowed. What do you think?

Perhaps we can create a second contents list in our S-CAR - (Page numbers: S-CAR v6.4):

First list - Game and Expansions:
Basic Game                    Page 07
The River I                     Page 23
Inns and Cathedrals        Page 25
...

Second list - Parts:
Abbey                            Page   69
Barns                             Page   75
Bazaars                          Page  101
...
--------------------------------------------------

The problem of a complete another CAR:
Who like to work on this second companion CAR?

But if we start with a second CAR - use the components:
The dragon
The fairy

Than we can start like this:
----------------------------------
The Dragon:

components
1  Dragon
1  Fairy
6  landscape tiles volcano
12 landscape tiles dragon

Rule
(..text from the official rule for the dragon...)

Rules for gameplay with other parts of Expansions:

Dragon and his menue list:
- follower
- big follower
- mayor
- wagon
- phantom
- Builder
- pig
- shepherd and sheep
- follower on the top of the tower
...

Dragon - City of Carcassonne:
The Dragon can't go inside the Walls of the City of Carcassonne

Dragon - Wheel of Fortune:
The Dragon can't go inside the Wheel of Fortune

Dragon - Castle:
The Dragon can't eat a follower in a castle.

...
----------------------------------------
Perhaps with information like this:
- builder (2.expansion)
----------------------------------------
HiG has in their official rules for Princess and the Dragon such list.

I think kettlefish is on the right track here.

Each component could have its own pdf file in one folder. Alternative one could make an app. And a slim version with the final rules.

Oooh, an app. I like it. But yes, I think the FAQs would be much more manageable if they were placed on pages with just that one expansion component under discussion. It would also encourage people to mix and match their expansions more.

Am I right in saying that you would like a rule book in terms of feature?  So that you could just play with the princess and not the Dragon for example - and therefore quickly lookup the rules for only the princess.

I am working on this in a very very simplified fform to make the document as short as possible.
I have arranged it by personal wood, communal wood, and feature - with official expansions in black text and unofficial in blue text.

Just lay the damn tile!

I don't really get it. When splitting an expansion works, it works because it is obvious to do.

And of all the expansions the Princess&Dragon is the one I would least want to split. You have a nice balance of adding and removing meeples.

Very true, but that doesn't mean you couldn't play with just The Princess some time. Or just the Magic Portals. Indeed, the Magic Portals plays very well with The Plague as well as with The Dragon.

I guess The Fairy does need its own page, though I can't imagine playing with it without The Dragon. Since I never play where the Fairy gives points, it only ever acts as a block to The Dragon in my games, but I guess it could be a separate expansion as well much like The Ark is in Ark of the Covenant.

[Edit: The Fairy and The Magic Portals is being added promptly.]

Something similar, though a bit more rounded out. It wouldn't have to be super short or anything. I'd say more like a CAR - Annotated Index where the component expansions are in alphabetical order with a page or two explaining required pieces/tiles/cardboard, the expansion it comes from, and the rules of the component expansion. It could also have all the FAQs specifically related to that expansion (which could lead to duplication in the other component expansions, though that isn't necessarily a bad thing). As a linked PDF file, it could be very handy in ways that the CAR is not always. Especially when playing with a random-draw format where all the tiles are mixed in, but only so many are pulled to create the game's tile pool. All sorts of component expansions can crop up that way and the CAR isn't really built for that.

The Fairy needs the Dragon...

But the one point at the beginning of the players turn.
This is now more important, if you play with the messages.

With this one point...- the player would get a message if his counting follower (follower or woman follower) lands on a dark field....

CornCircles I and CornCircles II

the rules are the same  - also the FAQ - that means only one pdf for both CornCircles.

In this pdf:
landscape tiles (also the pictures):
- CornCircles I
- CornCircles II

Yeah, technically they are the same, I suppose. Another interesting aspect of this component expansion CAR would be that vanilla tiles will not get mentioned at all. Only the expansion-specific tiles will get mentioned, leaving other tiles to find their own homes. Like the tunnels in Princess & Dragon would be mentioned under The Tunnels expansion, but not under any of the P&D expansion components.
