For seperating the expansions i loved the idea above with the slide in dividers. Two minusses tough: cost and since the dividers take space not everything will fit snuggly. And everybody loves snugglyness. To illustrate my point here's a picture of a little girl who just saves a fish from drowning by snugliness!
Dddddeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrppp

To counter this problem i had this idea. I folded old post cards in a bookstop kinda way. If you print postcards of 46mm with folding lines which cost pennies when you order a lot everybody can just cut them their desired length and you can arrange your collection anyway you want.

It will fit snuggly, and they will keep standing up so if you take and expansion out. The space will keep standing up and yoy can put your expansion back without having to shift something around.  Furthermore since it gives a bit it is easier to put back and wont damage the tiles.

Underneath the trays i created a shallow hollow where you can put the rulebooklets, the CAR or hide your Katy Perry Cd's.

In conclusion the design of the box covers the main concerns people have with a carcassonne box:
- it can hold a lot , also for the years to come (hear, hear)
- for the people who want portability the top tray can be fitted with a sliding lid which will make it easily portable in your standard backpack.
- for the people just wanting a small box because they dont want everything the can just buy this top tray. It practicly,is nothing more than a simple whine box and shouldnt cost more than a couple of bucks.
- it is cost effective
- it can snuggly divide the expansions any way you want for a very small price
- its practical: you can take out the tiles easily and put them back quickly
- it has a bottom hollow where you can hide your erotic literature.

Just kidding with that last one.

Anyways i understand the reservations a lot of people have with creating a universally acceptable box. But i do think while my ideas might not be the best cause there's a lot of smart people out there it does show in my opinion that it is possible to create something which is usefull for almost everybody.

Kind regards

Gave you a merit!  :meeple: Your box image and the conclusion list pretty much fits the idea I had in mind.
World record holder for a single game of Carcassonne using 10 007 tiles!

Here's my new case and I feel it's absolutely perfect. Maybe you can get some ideas out of it. This has everything made thus far and the capability to hold much more. Im so glad that I now have a case the organizes everything, holds the tower, catapult, wheel of fortune, directions, and looks classy and cool.

Tres chique. I like the diagonal band in the lid. Seems very effective. The side slot for the catapult is also a nice touch in combination with the trays.

Again the tray system seems to take the price.

Thanx

Wow, I love that suitcase for three reasons:
  • It looks well-travelled.
  • It has a 100-point scoring track that I helped make.
  • Packing around a disassembled tower = dedication

Guesclin, I appreciate your detailed experimentation but I feel like you are trying to force some of your personal opinions on the rest of us. I don't think anyone would disagree that cardboard dividers are a better use of available space, but they are not of a sufficient quality for a premium storage solution. If low-cost is the primary objective, plastic storage solutions have already won. In fact, you could pack the whole game around in a plastic shopping bag from the grocery store, and some stores give them to you for free. I think that the decision to upgrade to a wooden storage solution is a quest for something a little more premium than plastic organizer boxes.

Earlier in the thread, Carcatronn and Yellow were talking about go7gaming storage boxes. I saw these on Kickstarter, but didn't back them because I had already backed a different Dominion storage solution. However, the go7gaming solutions are fantastic for a few reasons. They're laser-cut, which means they can be made quickly and cheaply. They have a few different options to further accommodate both personal taste and budget: inserts for the original cardboard boxes, full-fledged storage chests for a more unified solution, bit boxes for even more internal separation.

One slot per tile is not feasible; something needs to hold the dividers in place. One slot per two tiles might be achievable, unless manufacturing tolerances are prohibitive. I think we can all agree that a series of tile lanes is necessary, along with an area for meeple and token storage. A bit box type sub-solution may be desirable here.

There are two challenges which, in my opinion, are inversely related: expandability and portability. They are also both closely related to the problem of physical size.

Expandability can serve to solve two related problems: the size of your collection right now, and the size of your collection in the future. There is also an opportunity to meet personal preference to some extent. I'm thinking about a series of interlocking boxes; not only would they stack, but they would mechanically attach to each other until deliberately separated. A set of boxes would consist mostly of identical tile boxes, plus a box to hold all the wooden bits, tokens, scoreboard, rules, etc.

This brings us to the other challenge of portability. I'm not sure that an interlocking stack of boxes is very portable. If the lid locked to the top box, perhaps a handle could be attached to the top of the lid. Maybe it needs to be transported like a wheeled-suitcase if your collection is very large? How do I store it at home?

Earlier Guesclin suggested that H25 X L 40 X W 30 would fit well on a bookcase. Are we talking inches or centimeters? The shelves on my Billy bookcase are 26 centimeters deep. The narrow Billy bookcase is 36 centimeters wide, and the standard Billy bookcase is 76 centimeters wide. My current storage solution doesn't really fit on either of these bookcases. The original boxes fit quite well, overhanging just slightly depending on orientation. If what I've seen on BoardGameGeek is any indication, most gamers are using a larger storage system such as Gorm, which is available in 35cm and 55cm depths. My plastic organizer is 38cm. The old-style board games like Clue(do) and Game of Life are in the 47cm to 52cm range.

I think the biggest question is how will the box be eventually stored? This will help determine which dimensions need to be constrained.

Fair enough. I think most people have like bookcase filled with games. So probably a billy friendly case would be the best.

For transportability agree on the detachable part. I assume most people dont want to take their entire collection and everything since there are already a lot of expansions so it doesnt have to be that big.

I'm not trying to force an opinion on anyone but the case thing , as i think, is something that a lot of people are interested in and i think it can be done. If i wasn't interested in anyones opinion i wouldn't have posted it on a forum. But i do know i can be a bit direct at times. No forcing intended  :P

Unless you are really irritated by the discussion, than we can just call quits and agree to disagree. No hard feelings.

I got a bit of a contradictional feeling here. The case itself is a marvel, thumbs up for that!
However, the plastic case inside just clashes with the authentisity being  sort of a medieval suitcase.

Overall, I'd love any form of storage holding everything at this point. Problem is, my salary is not high and every penny saved goes into buying more tiles / expansions.  :meeple:

Where did you get the plastic cases?  I have not been able to locate any that are the right size for the tiles.

Joanne's Fabric is the store but the brand is ArtBin. The ones at Joanne's are about 1/8 inch taller than typical tackle boxes found at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. The increased hieght makes for the perfect height for Carcassonne pieces.
