Sorry it's taken so long.  I place the tile in the top right corner and claim the city for 4 points.  Let me know if the tiles and figures are all in their correct locations!

Ah I think I've not been clear, I mean the fishing boat tokens rather than the trade goods ships.  Thank you for the kind offer though Halfling and for the tip about board game extras!

Thanks Dan! Well make my move tonight when in home and (hopefully) upload an image of the tiles!

Just to throw another variable in: Is your river collection complete if you don't have the GQ11 river tiles...?

The Marketplace / South Sea's spare parts
« on: January 22, 2016, 02:35:57 PM »
I recently bought a used copy of South Seas stating to be complete but unfortunately when I opened the box it was missing a few of the fishing boat tokens and a large and small wooden fish. I know these parts are really available from cundco but thought I'd ask here of anyone might have the spare pieces they'd donate.

If not, no worries! Thanks!

When an outbreak is eradicated and the Outbreak token is turned to its field side, using the rule above, it means that the magic portal can be used to claim a feature on the outbreak tile and be safe from the plague for the rest of the game!
But this applies just the same without Portal, doesn't it? Since you can move your followers within a structure playing with Plague, you can exploit that option, whenever a save tile is part of your building, and you have a straight way to the tile not crossing tiles with fleas.

Yes, very true the magic portal just allowed you to claim a feature when you're not attached to the feature already to flee the plague.

I have both in my collection but I wouldn't have paid as much for it as I did unless the money was going to charity.  I got my copy in the Jack Vasel memorial auction on BGG 2014 and paid $52 (approx. £36) for it which is £9 per tile - far higher than I am happy to pay for an expansion usually but as it was for charity I was happy to get a rare expansion and support people who are part of the gaming community who have suffered personal hardship.

I think that they add a great dynamic to the game and having more of them just means they make more of an impact and, in my experience, help to balance out who gets to choose the action over the duration of the game.

I have used this combination and have found it effective when utilising what I believe to be a loophole in the plague rules:

The rules for the Plague say that "a flea token may never be placed on a plague source tile" p.177 CAR 7.4 (emphasis mine)

When an outbreak is eradicated and the Outbreak token is turned to its field side, using the rule above, it means that the magic portal can be used to claim a feature on the outbreak tile and be safe from the plague for the rest of the game!

The CAR also states that "the player may not deploy a follower" p.175 when the outbreak tile is first placed but says nothing about subsequent placement e.g. once it is a latent outbreak.

I know it's a blatant abuse of an already quite glitchy expansion but until there's an official clarification to the rules for the Plague the i'll continue to use it!

Surely the easiest solution is to just use a CCFR tile (where the CC part is only one city) as this would still allow all tiles to be played without the instant 4 point city.  The most 'instant' points would be 2 points (4 with an Inn) from the road which is less of a game changer.  This tile combination is available in 'Inns & Cathedrals', 'Traders & Builders', GQ11, 'Wheel of Fortune', and 'The Besiegers'.

The only flaw in this that I can see, (other than its scarcity) is that only the GQ11 and Wheel of Fortune versions are 'vanilla' tiles - all the others have either an Inn by a lake, trade good, or are besieged!

Oh Dan - ever the comedian!

General / Re: Completionism Poll #1: Cathars, Siege and Besiegers
« on: January 11, 2016, 04:02:19 AM »
I have all three and for the following reasons:

#1 - I am a completionist, I like having all the tiles with different artwork
#2 - When I play Carcassonne I like it to be a big game.  With only 4 or 6 tiles I find that the effect of Cathars/Siege/Besiegers is not as noticeable - especially when playing with expansions which have a lot of city tiles such as Traders & Builders.  I usually include Besiegers and then at least one of the other two - usually Siege (see #3 below)
#3 - I like to have as close to matching colours for the fields.  Although I love the Cathar artwork (the prettiest of the 3 in my opinion) the grass is a totally different colour to the rest of my collection.  Siege matches up better.

Overall I really like the mechanic that comes with these expansions so would rather have more opportunity to see these utilized than not!

Anything Else / Re: Medieval Tower Bread Stamp

Very cool. As a keen baker and Carcassonne player that'd be right up my alley. I look forward to seeing some photos of either imposing games of Carcassonne (with your tower looming in the background), some personalised baking, out both at the same time!

Does it have to be for Classic Carcassonne or can it be for any of the spin offs?

I can't thank you enough for all you do here at CarcC. Alongside Decar and others you keep this site becoming more of a community and less of a forum which I think is excellent. Although it hasn't always run smoothly I've really enjoyed the Carcassonne by forum game I've been a part of. It's also been great getting some useful hints and tips both in playing the game and finding expansions of the game through your newsletters.

Thank you for another great year and merry Christmas!

God bless,

Guy
