Favouritism Poll #1 - The Scoring Tracks
« on: March 11, 2016, 10:09:31 AM »
Welcome everyone!

As you know jungleboy has done a fantastic job at exploring the world of completionism in Carcassonne.  But don't think the story ends there.   O0 We still lots of things to consider; those rarer items, those strange variations, and many other things.

So this week, rather than consider what you need for a complete collection; we're changing perspective and asking you:

What's your favourite.....Scoring Track?

A few weeks ago I was reading an article that took a critical view of scoreboards from many games.  Some of them are dreadful, they don't spiral round and don't have every number marked off and some it's hard to tell what direction you're moving in.  In the comments section is an interesting review of the Carcassonne Scoreboard.  The 49-point score track has possibly the best overall design, it hits all the marks mentioned and has few extra benefits.  But the Carcassonne scoretrack has been through several iterations (well 6 to my count).

Here they all are:

Here's a chance to review your collection and decide which you like the most.  Please tell us why and if you don't like any of them what you use instead.

It would also be interesting to know what counters you use to record your high scoring games.  Do you use dice, counters, poker chips or spinning dials to record those scores, or do you use a custom printed board that goes up to 1000?

If you think I've missed an option (like the Brazilian edition with the publisher's logo in the bottom corner) it's time to share it with us!

For those interested the article I was refering to can be found here, it's worth a good look:

I've cast my vote.  I like the Grey-Stone scoretrack the best.  The numbers are easy to read although it is missing every number like the field so it's not perfect.

I've not used it very much, but I think the Carcassonne II scoretrack may be the best yet (if you can see past the blue towers) the numbers are clear.

Merit to you for another series to look forward to!

I have the 5th one, with the crown, but for some reason I really like the stone one (2nd picture). I find the grey colours really appealing

The 2.0. version isn't that bad either!

Actually still it is missing one of the original cundco ones to the list.
It is certainly my favorite.

I played with the 70-point score track once. The weird thing was that at the end of the game, Dan's meeple was further along the score track than my meeple, even though I desired to have my meeple further along the track than his. So in conclusion, I didn't like the 70-point score track.

:)

I think you might have had that problem any of the scoring tracks here!  :p

From my perspective, you were both behind me, I didnt see any 70point markers :p

As of few weeks ago we started using an Excel sheet printout where we type in scoring and what type (city, road etc) that scored. Great for statistics.

Minor drawback is not knowing current score until after the game. But one could simply use both this method and a scoring track I suppose.

I would have the excel spreadsheet with totals on the laptop and add the points as you go so that the scores are available. Then you would know how many points you are behind me!

Indeed, and this is what the Excel sheet does. It's just easier to use pen and paper during play. No doubt we will be reverting back to the good ol' scoreboard from the base game soon enough after these megaCarc games we've been running lately. x_x

I was quite happy with things the way they were :P. Although, this wasn't an official score track as it had been printed and stuck on the back of a cereal box. Maybe this was why it didn't work out so well for you?

I voted for the 3rd option for two reasons. 1) I've used it far more than any of the others, 2) I have one that is signed to me by KJW! ;D

The magnetic scoreboard is my favourite, since everyone can see the points easily and it doesn't come under threat of being jolted! I use this version for Mega Carcassonne games, but instead of the magnets that come with it I have glued some small magnets to the back of some meeples (including the second score figure from The Messages, and The Robbers).

Also when playing with King & Robber Baron, I use the meeple shaped scoreboard (10th Anniversary edition) to track the longest road and largest city, as well as the number of completed cities and roads. I may start to use the 70-point board for this instead now that I have it!

When playing a smaller game, I normally use the Wheel of Fortune scoreboard. I just like the little crown symbol.

All that said, I am extremely happy about owning the 70-point scoreboard (first edition). Hunting this down was a real quest and finally finding one gave me a great sense of achievement!

(I'll edit in a couple of photos to this post when I am back home.)

What would be a recommended scoring track when using The Bandits and / or The Messenger mini expansions? Haven't thought much about it as we don't use these features save the tiles themselves as regular tiles.
