I won't be able to make it to Essen by Thursday night but I should be there from Friday night until Sunday afternoon.

I'll try keep it open, hoping I can come this year. My birthday is on October 14th which would make it extra special. :D
There's no way for me to plan so far ahead, most likely beginning of October I know for sure if I can, hoping there's still space and hotels for me to go.

Carcassonne celebrates its 15th birthday!

15 years ago the boardgame Carcassonne by Klaus-Jürgen Wrede won the popular games award “Spiel des Jahres” (Game of the year).
We want to celebrate this anniversary and the worldwide success of the boardgame with all our fans and friends at the SPIEL 2016 in Essen/Germany.
For this birthday we will organise a Carcassonne party on Thursday, 13th of October in the restaurant Ruhrstopp, Grendtor 10 in Essen-Steele.
From 19:00 to 22:30 author Klaus-Jürgen Wrede, representatives from the Hans im Glück company and many other people who are involved with the creation of new Carcassonne games will be there.
Of course Klaus-Jürgen Wrede will sign Carcassonne novelties and other games.
In addition, lotteries, raffles and a Carcassonne quiz for experts with great prizes will be in store.
At last we will be able to talk about your Carcassonne experiences or play a game together.
Also we will cater for your physical well-being. The entry fee includes a hot and cold buffet and all drinks are included for the evening.
The ticket is € 39,90 per person.
A minimum number of 70 participants are necessary, so that the party can take place.
Bookings are welcome at u.schmitz@forum-spiel.de until June 30th.
After your booking you will receive more information about the event and the way of payment.

Now I'm thinking that I could rent a car, leave work a bit early, drive there and come back the same evening (so no alcohol for Jéré C:-)). It's 1h40 (160km) away so that's not too bad.
EDIT: Also, the fact that this restaurant is 8km from Essen confirms the car rental as a viable option for a short visit.

Hi torminalis,
sorry that no one answered you here. Udo Schmitz was in that time on travel (Australia and NZ) he came back at the end of September and had much work for the exhibition "modell-hobby-spiel" in Leipzig. Now he is almost on the way to Spiel in Essen.
We will meet us at the exhibition Spiel 2016 in Essen on Thursday and Friday - each day at 1:00pm.

Just a quick note to say that Essen has been amazing so far. Decar and I are sharing a very nice hotel room but it's a bit of a walk so my feet are getting sore. But we've met a lot of people and bought a lot of games. I presented KJW with the frame on Thursday and he seemed very impressed. I even gave a little speech which was fun too. I've played the new Amazonas spin-off 3 times and am a big fan so far, looking forward to playing it again tomorrow when we meet jungleboy and Jere. So much to talk about, and photos to post, but will leave that until I get home...

Everyone seemed to think it was pretty funny when I suggested that the frame contained a photo of myself. I'll have to get him one of those for next year instead. Tom was videoing it but there's a gap where he ran out of space on his camera and switched to his phone.

All good, thanks! It took about eight hours, I switched trains three times and I watched about six hours of a beloved Ken Burns documentary. See you guys at one of the meeting spots today? Or maybe I'll just listen in the halls for laughter and then follow it to find danisthirty. :))

The members and fan meeting was a great event.
I've left the Spiel'16 together with maik63de and PresetM on Thursday at around 5 pm. We took the metro to our flat.
We have had a small flat (2 rooms, kitchen and bathroom and a balcony). Our flat is in the same part of the city Essen like the event at the evening.
We walked to the restaurant and met all the people there.
At the members and fan meeting there were our CarcF and CarcC members, the HiG + CundCo + CoT teams, the team from Herner Spielezentrum, some license partners of HiG (for example 999-games from NL) and many more people.
The events starts at 7pm - and the day of the Spiel ended at 7pm - that means many of the exhibitiors stuff came later to the meeting. But they still arrived before KJW started with the great piano concert.
KJW played songs from
Johann-Sebastian Bach - Prälidium C-Dur,
Frédéric François Chopin "Fantaisie Impromptu",
Johannes Brahms -Walzer As-Dur,
Claude-Michel Schönberg - a song from the musical Les Miserables: "I dreamed a dream,
Friedrich Gulda "Für Paul" (for Paul - his son),
Coldplay "viva la vida".

after KJW has finished his small concert, we had our dinner.
The food:
Chili con carne
Salmon with spinach
Chicken in red sauce
Spätzle (some kind of noodles - bavarian - south Germany)
Potato dumplings ("Kartoffelknödel" - great hmmm) with dark sauce
Rice
Vegetables
and some more
Decar was so impressed of our "Kartoffelknödel" - It was the first time he had eaten a real food - not some kind of pie...
