Title: The Great Escape
Post by: Decar on June 26, 2018, 08:42:11 AM
It's been a very long time since I suggested a tournament,  but I was having a chat with TheSteveAllen yesterday over on Slack and struck upon an idea.

What if one player was trying to score as many points as possible, while another player was trying to deny them points?

Rather than both players scoring and denying points, you'd each have one focus.

I thought it would lead to some interesting opportunities for trapping and escaping, so hence the name:

The Great Escape!

As I said above, the tournament would be played as 1v1, where one player is attempting to score points (the fugitive), while the other is attempting to reduce their total score (the trapper), either by trapping or claiming features before their opponent can.

After the game the fugitive's score would be recorded.

If there are several people interested then groups can be created.  In a group each player would be the fugitive against all the other players.  The winner of the group would be the player with the highest average fugitive score.

In terms of format, players would play 2 games, one as the fugitive, the other as the trapper.

If you'd be interested in taking part in such a tournament, let me know below!

Nice idea Decar. I'm always keen to experiment with different ways of playing Carcassonne.

Please count me in! :)

Count me in as well. (unless the games are played during the summer holidays)  The last online tournament seems like ages ago although the WC of last year was concluded this year.  ;)

I don't tend to trap deliberately. So for those that do, how does this tournament differ from your standard modus operandi?
The trapper will be scoring features and trapping meeples. Sounds like what Dan zone2, glh and merlin do to me every time we play - and damn good at it they are too.

Not against this at all, just after tactical hints really >:D

trappers are not trying to win the game by scoring more points, only limit their opponent's.

I'll declare the Great Escape has started!

The following people have entered:  I've got a time zone adjustment as appropriate  :(y)

Decar - UK   +0 Hrs
DanisThirty - UK +0 Hrs
Rosco - UK +0 Hrs
thodekey - Belgium +1 Hrs
Sinscerly - Netherlands +1 Hrs
Mr Numbers - Latvia +2 Hrs
ny1050220 - Michigan, USA -5 Hrs

When you schedule a game, you can use JCloisterzone,  Android, iOS, skype...whatever you want and can facilitate.  We will be using base-game only.
Escapee will always have the first turn.

Players need to play 2 games.  Trapper vs Escapee and then switch roles.  Please take screenshots of both and make it clear which role you are playing as.

Please look to schedule 1 session a week - no need for me to allocate games, we're playing everyone!

However, suggestion for first games:

Dan vs Rosco
thodekey vs Sinscerly
Mr Numbers vs ny1050220

Decar vs .... - free tomorrow night & Sunday.

MrNumbers and I played both games today. Yay for the ice-breakers!

Now the game..
Early in the game I thought it was OK to trap a meeple of MrNumbers' so that he would have few meeples to steal points from me. That didn't work out so well.
MrNumbers got more points than I, so I guess I failed.

Thank you, MrNumbers, for the games! Good luck to you in the following games.

First games have been played.
Game 1: MrNumbers as escaper - 113.
Game 2: ny1050220 as escaper - 82.

Completely different style of playing, especially playing as trapper. You should always remember that your points are irrelevant, but it is so tempting to place a meeple on already-8-points cloister! ;D BTW, ny1050220 joined to 12-points farm only with his last tile!
Playing as escaper you don't avoid joining attempts from your opponent - you join by yourself :)
Thanks for the good games, NY, and good luck in future games!

Rosco and I planned to play in person while I was up in the Lake District last week but my "cram as many family activities into a week as is humanly possible" holiday with my extended family didn't allow a lot of time for visiting nearby pals. Sorry Rosco :(

Hopefully we can play our games this week?

Hello everyone,

I'm very sorry but due to personal/familial reasons and with some regret, i will be obliged to retire from this competition. Sorry for the inconvenience to the other participants.
I hope to join you folks again later in another competition...

Greetings,
thodekey
