Actually did manage to do better on my 2nd attempt but still couldn't catch danisthirty!

Hopefully 665 will secure 2nd place.  :)

This was fun but hopefully I can do better on my next attempt!  :)

606 is not a bad score for a first attempt.

Merit to you Safari for the informative post. I've tried my hand printing some of the fan made conversions and while they were serviceable the quality definitely varied from one conversion to the next. Part of that may have been the fault of my printing process but either way I find the prospect of these conversions having some standardization on some level exciting.

Now I could probably try to read the discussion on CarcF but I'll ask my questions here so members here can benefit. Do the conversions only include CC2 to CC1 or what about conversions to the winter edition? Also do the rules say anything about single tile promos/expansions like the Spiel tiles? I mean would converting all the Spiel promo tiles count as one of the two biannual conversions or would each tile count as one of the conversions?

Our second play was much like my first -  Ultimately, I can't understand how given only ~half the tiles in the deck you have any idea what colours as worth investing in.  If a player is lucky, what stops them holding a monopoly of a colour and only buying thing in the last round?  Mechanically, it's nice and pleasant, but I think we're looking for a little more strategy in our games.  I've not tried the expansion, so hope that helps somehow!

Remember that you can only make ONE dedication per turn. Yes someone could get lucky and gain a monopoly of a particular color early on but having such a monopoly doesn't do much for anyone. Yes it means, if they want to hold that majority as long as they can, then nobody can make a 7 unique dedication. Also don't forget that there is a hand limit of 12 so in a 2 player game if they gain a monopoly of a given color and don't intend to use that color then that effectively drops their hand limit down 7. Rule is if you start a round with more than 12 cards you have to make a dedication or discard down to 12. Knowing this you might try forcing your opponent to hold as many different colors as they can to limit their options. Also think about it, if your opponent is actively going for a monopoly of a color then that is turns that they may not be getting cards of other colors to build towards a 3 pairs dedication or a 4 of a kind dedication. Use your opposing turns to get these kinds of dedications before they do and ultimately you should be able to stay ahead of them.

I haven't played dozens of games of this but I've played enough to know that there is less luck and more strategy than you initially think there is.

I am a beta tester on Steam and I've already managed to run into a bug. Two thirds of the way through a solo game against an easy AI I managed to lock up the game so to speak. Quitting and reloading didn't help as the game gets stuck at the loading screen when I try to resume. Anyways this isn't the place for bug reports so let me share some screenshots instead.

I want to point out that right now the game has three levels of AI (Easy, Medium, and Hard). The game includes two playable expansions, The Abbot and The River I. For right now, they are included but it looks like in the future you may have to purchase them. There is a tutorial although I skipped it. There is a shop but it is unavailable right now. In game you can have a top down view or an isometric view. In game you can toggle on a farm overlay that will highlight all currently occupied farms and who has majority (very similar to how JCloisterZone does it). As an option you can have the game indicate when no tiles will not fit in a particular hole. As another option you can have access to a list of all remaining tiles. I haven't tried the online yet but there is a chat lobby and in game messaging.

I won't comment on the visuals as I'll let the screenshots do the talking. As for sound the music track is alright and the sound effects aren't too annoying or anything. I think one nice touch is that if you are playing with the River expansion then you can hear sounds of the river flowing.

On the loading screens the game provides you with some tips and funny little quips. Interestingly enough one of the tips suggests that you try the Inns & Cathedrals expansion even though that expansion isn't yet available. So if nothing else we know that one will be in the final release!

Assuming the bugs I've noticed so far get sorted out this looks like it will be a very solid release for PC and Android. FWIW though I still ultimately prefer the iOS version unless Asmodee could somehow surpass the iOS version in terms of available expansions. Even then though I'd still probably prefer the iOS version anyways since I prefer iOS in general over Android.

Anyways, enjoy the screenshots!

Asmodee Digital just announced via their Facebook page that they are working on a new digital version of Carcassonne for Android & Steam (PC). The accompanying image suggests it will be styled in the new style artwork with an added sense of 3D to the tiles. Currently Asmodee is taking sign ups for the upcoming beta test of the game.

You can see the original post here (I think), https://www.facebook.com/AsmodeeDigital/photos/a.955810484442115.1073741829.941343545888809/1465970130092812/?type=3

You can get instructions on how to sign up for the beta here, http://forums.asmodee.net/topic/2-how-to-apply/

For me personally, I LOVE the iOS version of Carcassonne and so that's my barometer in regards to what I expect of this new Android & Steam version. Based on the single image in that Facebook post I'm about 50/50 at this point but to be fair Asmodee has been hitting it out of the park lately with their digital board game apps.

Ooooh if you never played Lanterns before I think you'll really enjoy it. I had it and the expansion I definitely enjoy both!

Official Rules / Re: mobile-CAR
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:14:01 PM »
I want to be clear that I am not suggesting we copy the iOS Carcassonne app verbatim or any of its assets but it does make for a good reference. If you look at the rules section in that app you will see it has a stylized background and that all tiles used in all examples are the same style / color. Yes I know the real game isn't like this. I mean just look at the German Cathedrals tiles compared to the base game tiles the fields are definitely different colors. What I'm suggesting though is that one we have something beyond just a plain white background. Two, all images, be it tiles, meeples, etc. all be of a high quality with no image compression. I admit this second part may not be easy to do and require quite a bit of work but it would go a long way in making a quality CAR.

Those are just some of my thoughts for now.

This is one of many reasons why an app is the way to go for the new CAR. You'd then be able to pick a "version" and it will show only those rules. Even then, during play, you can maybe click a button to show older or newer rule changes. The flexibility I feel is something that is needed at this point.
If someone only like some of the new rules or vice versa, they can make a custom rule set, save it, upload it for sharing. Maybe even integrate this with the Java program for the tournaments.

Not to derail too much from the OP but I absolutely agree with the notion of "appifying" the CAR. I like the idea of customization in that you tell the app which expansions you are playing with and the app will only show you rules, footnotes, order of play, etc. as it pertains to only the expansions specified. Also if you're gonna go to all that trouble, for sake of being complete, might as well include the winter edition in there as well.

While I'm thinking about it, if the CAR were an app it could be handled one of two ways. The app connects to a server (if internet is enabled) and always grabs the latest version of the CAR (if it doesn't already have it), that or CAR updates can pushed out as app updates. Either way, not that the current method is hard by any means, but it would make downloading CAR updates easier. Plus it would make the CAR much more accessible. Yes, right now you can download the CAR directly to your phone/tablet or to a computer and then copy it to your phone/tablet but either way multiple steps are involved and you need to have a way of viewing PDFs on your device. Again, an app would certainly simplify that.

First, apologies if this should be in the marketplace subforum

Anyways, I discovered this evening that Meeple Source is doing a Kickstarter for their Game Upgrades. The KS includes upgrades for games like Catan, Pandemic: The Cure, Camel Up, Colt Express, Islebound, the yet to be released Charterstone and more... Of course noting the focus of this forum this KS also includes upgrades for Carcassonne. The two options include a full set of 19 Meeples (Everything Cundco offers plus the new meeple from Under the Big Top) in 10 different colors (5 of which aren't available through Cundco) and a set of replacement character meeples that include (The Dragon, Fairy, Teacher, Mage, Witch, and the Count).

This KS offers flat rate shipping regardless of how many different game upgrades/meeple sets you get.

I point this out not because the overall price may be cheaper than Cundco but because they do offer 5 colors that Cundco does not.

You can check out the KS here, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/meeplesource/game-upgrades-30-by-meeple-source/description

Official Rules / Re: CAR for Carcassonne v2
« on: May 09, 2017, 06:03:34 PM »
I agree with a lot of what has been said recently. I think two separate documents will please the most people. It may not be the perfect solution but then again a perfect solution may not be possible. Regardless of all the Carcassonne v2 stuff that is or will be available I am greatly interested in seeing a complete Carcassonne v1 document. I own the German Castles and Haflings expansions but I've been hesitant on playing with them too much primarily because rules for them don't exist in the CAR and that there is a lot of questions surrounding those two.

One thing though I think we should keep in mind, going forward, is what the devs behind the iOS carcassonne app do. It is a very well done board game adaption and regarded as one of the best board game apps on iOS if not mobile in general. The thing is everything they do apparently has HiG's blessing. This means the rules for how expansions interact with each other all had to be approved by HiG or so I assume. This hasn't lead to anything we didn't already know, yet but it might. The thing is some people might play this digital version more so than the physical version and so when they play the physical version may rely on what they learned/know from the digital version to guide their playing of the physical version. The only real interesting thing to happen so far was the adding of the Abbot expansion. Granted it is easier for the devs to adapt this expansion to the game than it is for us playing it physically but still.

I guess my point is this what happens in the future if the devs add the new 10th expansion to the game or what happens when they add the Abbey & Mayor expansion to the game? What wagon rules will the use? v1, v2 or will they give players a choice? Also what would happen if we as a community make a rules decision around an expansion and then they later put that expansion in the digital version but the rules the use differ from what we decided. Would we as a community accept or reject this? I mean I am sure the devs have / had a lot of the same questions we do and I'm sure they check these forums for input but if HiG gives them final approval then who knows.

Granted the devs haven't added new content to the game in a while but they are working on new content. Either way it is something to think about.

I'm looking forward to trying this DaFees,  it's had some really mixed reviews (regarding take-that and OP).  Love to know what you think!

Finally got to play this last night. Played 3 games of it in fact. It was everything I expected and more. The game, to me at least, is a lot of fun. Plenty strategy and ways to win, for sure. The gameplay is fairly smooth and easy to follow. The various theme packs are fantastic and absolutely look forward to more. As to the elephant in the room in regards to the 'take that' elements. I can say this; There are two main forms of take that. One, are the unfair cards which can be nasty (I got hit pretty hard by one of them during the second game I played) but they impact everyone. Two, are event cards. Most event cards have an either/or choice in that you can positively affect yourself or negatively affect your opponent(s). From what I have seen though while you can be a jerk to your opponents, you're likely doing so at a cost to yours. A good example of this is the Merchandising/Giant Wad of Cash event card. With this card, you can either give yourself 5 coins or close an opponent's attraction. So while you could hurt your opponent for a round you also hurt yourself by denying yourself 5 coins that could make the difference between doing what you wanted to do and not.

For what it is worth I wouldn't put too much stock into some of the reviews you might read, especially if you haven't played the game for yourself yet. The game, again, for me at least, really is a lot of fun and while take that does exist to a degree I do not think it is anywhere near as bad as it has been made out to be. I mean you'd have to be a really big care bear for the take that element to be of any real bother and even then the game includes a game changer card that allows to play the game with most of the take that not allowed.

If they add the new art, I imagine it will either be as an expansion or in the app settings. Either way, users will be able to turn this option on/off.

They are however kind of blocked at the moment since there is no new art version of the german cathedrals, yet.

There's no classic art version of the Abbot / gardens expansion and (except for the Gingerbread man) none of the other expansions are available in the winter theme but that didn't stop them.
