As some of you will already be aware, the Traders & Builders league is still running and has three matches left to be played before the two groups clash to establish a final ranking. Despite this though, I thought I’d attempt to get things going with the next online tournament sooner rather than later so that we’re all ready and raring to go as soon as possible. With this in mind, please allow me to introduce to you... the Inns & Cathedrals Expansion League! :(y) :) :(y)
It's free to enter and anyone with a PC/ Laptop/ Mac (i.e. anybody who can run JCloisterZone) can take part, regardless of skill level or location. Here are a few points on how it will work (these rules are the same as they were for the Traders & Builders league):
- All players will be divided between a number of groups so that no group contains more than 7 or 8 players (preferably). Each group will have a dedicated administrator to oversee the running of the group and keep a master record of scores.
- Every player must play a single head-to-head (2-player) game of Carcassonne against every other person in their group. Games will be played online using JCloisterZone so please ensure you have downloaded the latest version of this (3.1.0) and have got it running on your PC well in advance of your first game.
- Each game must include just the basic game plus the Inns & Cathedrals expansion only, for a total of 90 tiles. The starting player should be selected at random by checking the "Randomise Seating Order" checkbox on the pre-game screen.
- Every player is awarded 3 league points for every game they win, or 1 point for a draw. This will be the primary ranking criteria for the league.
- The total number of points scored by you and the total number of points scored against you (by your opponents) throughout all league games you've played will be logged and used to calculate your total score differential (total points won minus total points scored against you). This will be the secondary ranking criteria for the league.
- Once you have finished your game, please post a screenshot of the final scores (these will appear in a pop-up window immediately after the final tile has been placed) back to the forums along with a write-up of your game if you so wish.
- Once everyone has played everyone else within their groups, similarly ranked players will play each other to determine an overall ranking (i.e. Group A winner vs Group B winner, Group A 2nd vs Group B 2nd etc).
There will be more details to follow, but if you'd like to take part please register your interest by posting below. Closing date for entries is the end of next week (22nd Feb) with a view to having the first games played from the middle of the following week.
The exact duration of the competition will depend on the number of participants, but if you're likely to be away for any sustained period of time throughout March then please be mindful of this before entering.
Best regards, and good luck!

Hopefully it will be a good opportunity to settle some of those old scores Yellow! ;)
Glad to have the 3 of you on board. Hopefully it won't just be the 4 of us though...

Not me; that's for sure! Hopefully it'll go the other way this time though :D

I'd like to participate as well.
May I make a suggestion concerning the point system? I think awarding 3 points for a win is not really necessary in a game where draws are so extremely rare. E.g. in the T&B league there hasn't been a single one so far (in 69 matches if I'm not mistaken.) In my opinion there is no need to encourage the players not to settle for a draw (which can happen quite often in football, and that was the reason for switching to the 3-point system in every football league a few decades ago), especially because this (i.e. settling for a draw) is almost impossible in a Carcassonne game.
Moreover, I would say that a victory by 1 point (which happened 2 times in T&B league) is such a tiny difference when the total winning score is always above 100 pts that in my opinion it's a bit unfair to award the winner two points more for that than for a draw. In other words: by the current point system, if I win a game by 1 pt difference, and then lose the next one by a large difference, I'm still in better position in the rankings than an other player with two draws. Although in my opinion his performance is at least not worse than mine (moreover, probably better).
What do you think? ???
-
I'm in. Hope I do better this time.
-
I'm quite happy with the 3 points; looking at the table it's quite clear who has won the most games. If it leaves room for to handle the extremely rare chances of a draw, then great.
I'm totally against using solely points differential I spent most of the competition making up for one bad game -191 i think.
Edit: not sure why it's not 2 points for a win (1 point each for a draw)

I may have not been quite clear: I am arguing for awarding the winners only 2 points for a win instead of 3.
-
I'm in the league as well.
I understand Levens point, and think, his arguments are fair. Although it is an extreme unlike scenario, that somebody takes part in not only one, but even two ties in one group stage. And only then he or she would be in disadvantage against somebody, who wins a game and loses an other one.

So from T&B League only quevy, farin, Yall and ny1050220 have not signed in yet. Would be great, if they join again, plus maybe a few other participants. :)
Are there any plans of connecting the individual leagues? (Like my suggestion, with the points you gain for achieving higher ranks in the tournaments.)

...and Andrew the Ambo, unless he's already signed up and I've missed his name. Apologies if this is the case!

Sort of, yes. All will be revealed soon. >:D :meeple: :green-meeple: :blue-meeple: :red-meeple: :black-meeple:

Yes, he has signed in (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1521.msg19492#msg19492).
Also rfielder wanted to join even previous League. Maybe he wants to join now?

I have sent him an email.

I'm in, please! The last one was really good and I really expect to enjoy one more time.
Thanks for arranging the games, Dan.
-
I'm in!
Dan very kindly sent me an email message, as a gentle kick in the butt, to let me know about this.
Will speak to my partner and post her reply later today.
-
Welcome on board guys! 8) :(y)

I may have not been quite clear: I am arguing for awarding the winners only 2 points for a win instead of 3.
I would agree with 2 points for a win. Then, in the unlikely event it happens to a player, two draws would/should equal someone with a win and a loss (putting the point differential aside).

Thanks Mr Numbers, and to reconfirm, Danisthirty, I am keen to be beaten again.
-
Io ci sono, spero che questa volta io sia più presente, in maniera da terminare in fretta le mie partite.

Translation: "I'm in, I hope this time I can be available more often and finish my games more quickly."
-
I'm too distracted lately, I have not thought about it and I wrote in Italian, without thinking to translate, sorry...
-
My partner, monwil, is also in.
-
I think I'm in... though have first bambino on the way in six weeks, so don't have super huge amounts of time and don't want to be "that guy" the only plays half his matches.
-
Congratulations durbs! :D I hope that both you and your partner are well and looking forward to the birth!
If he/ she is a first child I believe he/ she's more likely to be late by up to a couple of weeks before they'd induce him/ her. This means it could be as long as a couple of months before Baby puts in an appearance so you might be safe to play all your games before the arrival.
However, family life isn't going to get off to a good start if you're too busy playing Carcassonne to get your partner to the hospital! Still, I can't think of a better excuse for an unexpected home-delivery:
"There's 15 tiles to go, can we hurry this up a bit? I have an Umbilical Cord to cut..." :))
-
Oooh!!! A new Carcassonne thingy!! I'm in!!! ^-^
:(y)
-
I'm gonna have to skip this one, I am currently waaaay too busy! :( I will be following the matches though, but this time no playing...
Do keep me informed for later leagues!

-
Oh, it is Carcas-ON!

Haha - Get ready to be Carcass-owned! O0

Can I do a haka to invoke fear in my opponents. It might help considering how I did in the current series.

Here's my smacktalk:

You're red.

Nice try, but luckily for us it's an Inns and Cathedrals league which includes both the FRCC tile and the FCFR tile, thus allowing us to liberate four of these meeples and then use them to destroy you. >:D

Very well. Some day we'll set up a game of Inns & Cathedrals as per that photo and play out the game to see how it goes for you... >:D
-
Just 5 matches left of the current Traders & Builders League. 3 of these are scheduled to take place this weekend, so if the other 2 happen as well we'll be all set for next week!
-
The league is now live!
More details including groupings can be found here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1589.0
Good luck everyone, and have fun!
