Question time!!!  ;D

Can you play with the abbot, without owning the new Carcassonne version?  :)

Like, if you only buy separately the abbot meeples, and if you have the old version and the old expansions, will the abbot work, or does it need some new element that only the new tiles have?  :(

The Abbot is used specifically with cloisters and “gardens”. You could use your own Abbot meeples (or anything really – it doesn’t matter) with classic Carcassonne + expansions according to the same rules as apply in the new edition of Carcassonne as these include Cloisters, but you wouldn’t be able to use them with the gardens as these are unique to the new artwork. So I guess the answer is that you could half use them.

Why don't we just draw them [gardens] on the tiles ourselves? ;) :))

I don't know if this is a serious suggestion or not, but there's nothing to stop us from making some little stickers I suppose. People could print the gardens out onto sticky-back paper, cut them out, peel them off and stick them onto the appropriate tiles if they're *that* desperate to be able to play with the Abbot...

You could always use one of the other expansions that you don't usually use and decide that the special features on those are "gardens." For example, the fairs from Catapult or the bazaars from Bridges, Castles, & Bazaars could easily become house-rule surrogate "gardens."

I'm sure at some point, someone will create a fan-expansion which you could print and make in the normal way which is the new gardens in the old artwork. People have made all sorts of their own tile designs, I'm certain someone could manage a garden.
Look to the north. Keep looking. There's nothing coming from the south.

The whole garden/abbot thing seems silly to me anyway. It certainly wasn't a compelling reason to get the new edition. So unless/until a more impressive expansion comes out in the new artwork, I'll stick with the old.

We are working on the Abbot 2.0 for Carcassonne 1.0 at the German Carcassonne-Forum, the expansion will be ready in the next days. If this is of interest we could upload the files here, too, I think.
There will be 2 versions:

- A herb-garden to use with the original Abbot figur.

- A greenstuff and fruit garden to use with a woman Gardener (using the woman-follower of the "messages" mini expansion).

My choice is the first: you don't have disturbing different Abbots and you don't need the Abbot meeple (if you have the messages). If you play with the messages, too, you could take any regular follower for it. And our houserule is every player can only use one german cloister for an Abbot 1.0 and we use the Abbot 2.0 for it.

The easiest way to replace the gardens is using the vineyards from Hills and Sheep.
Or you could try my variant rules for the Abbot here: http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1605.0

This is a really great idea! This adds more strategy to the placement of the Abbot (a bit like placing the Barn) and it reduces the strong power of the country cloisters in bigger games.
