Title: Carcassonne - Über Stock und Stein (across country)
Post by: kettlefish on July 28, 2015, 12:42:10 AM
In autumn there will come the next Carcassonne spin-off game:

Carcassonne - Über Stock und Stein

"über Stock und Stein" is a German phrase many translators says "over hill and dale" - but in this game you don't have hills or dales. It is more like a phrase for "across country".

Scott has posted at CarcC facebook (https://www.facebook.com/CarcassonneCentral/photos/a.581124571904962.152677.546781705339249/1235122933171786/?type=1&theater) some more information

and from
TricTrac France (http://www.trictrac.net/jeu-de-societe/carcassonne-par-monts-et-par-vaux/infos) are also some information

and at the
Homepage from Klaus-Jürgen Wrede (http://www.kjwrede.de/2015/07/ab-oktober-carcassonne-ueber-stock-und-stein/) is also a short information

The graphics artist is: Doris Matthäus

Looks like the French decided to call it "Over Hills/Mountains and down Dales" too.

In English, the phase "Over Hills and Dales" is a common phrase to describe the country-side.  The artwork looks turn of the last century too.

Either way, the art work looks great  :(y)

So it's a rustic, countryside version of the original. My first impression is that this isn't a really 'strong' theme that screams out to be bought and played, but I do like rustic things, so we'll see.

So is it just me or is it strange that they decide to upgrade the graphics (unlike most of us want), and now they decide to make a new spin off with a bit of old graphics?

You're right, but considering the scarce information given in the provided links, there are no sticks and stones in the game as well, which would be the literally translation of the phrase.

I assume, this was the project, you have been proof reading recently? ;)

Yes I did the proof reading of the rules. And really there are no hills and no dales in that game.

I am very curious about the rules of this, but above all I want to know those to see if some can be adapted to the original game to create other fan-expansions.

Yes, I like the look of the box too. Disappointed that they didn't include someone riding around on a pig in the background though... :(

Interesting that only two years in and they've already stopped doing "Around the World" games. I also am disappointed that the Star Wars one isn't releasing this year considering The Force Awakens is coming out December. That's two misses. This game looks potentially interesting, but it also reminds me a lot of Kids of Carcassonne.

Have they definitely stopped doing the Around the World series? I thought maybe the next one had just been delayed because of these other projects.

There will be other "Around the world" games, I know of two different ideas, they are delayed.

On the homepage of Klaus-Jürgen Wrede he says www.kjwrede.de :

die Star Wars Edition von Carcassonne wird noch in diesem Jahr erscheinen!
Basierend auf den Grundregeln von Carcassonne wird es ein ganz besonderes Spielerlebnis sein!

Yet in this year there is still a special surprise:
The Star Wars Edition of Carcassonne will be published yet in this year.
This will be a special game experience based on the rules of Carcassonne!

As Fritz_Spinne said already Star Wars Carcassonne will come this year and the AotW series is going on next year. Somewhere I heard that the next one will be situated in the Amazon Rain Forest.

Maybe you messed up some news.  O0

Fair enough. My brain is so muddled these days I'm not certain I should even be going online anymore. Dude, working on a PhD thesis is a pain in the brain.

I've called with Moritz Brunnhofer (HiG) today, he told me that Zman games will also publish the English version of this spin-off at Spiel 2015 in Essen.

Star Wars Carcassonne?! Wow. I love both of those things on their own very much, but I can't see the combination being anything more than an ugly Frankenstein's monster of a game. Not a case of "two great tastes that taste great together," IMHO...

Wow great news!  I just had a quick look over the German rules. It looks really really good! I love the score track and the tile distribution looks interesting. There's also 73 tiles so an equal number for 2,3,4 players. Not sure I understood how the paths work, but I cant wait!
Title: Re: Carcassonne - Über Stock und Stein (across country)
Post by: Fritz_Spinne on August 26, 2015, 12:39:09 PM
You get points for the hiker like in regular Carcassonne but before you can walk him along the path. If you extend the path and don't place a meeple or stable you can move the hiker along the path and you get as many points as the tiles the hiker is walking forward. (He cannot stop on a tile with another hiker, but he can skip over other hikers.) So you can wander forward and backwards every other turn, if you only get boring paths ... and get much points.

These expansions are getting ridiculous.  At this point, they're out of good ideas and trying to milk you out of your money.

I think my collection is complete with the German castles. Adios!

Nice knowing you.

I thought the artwork was great and the walking mechanic allows paths to score similar to fields.

The tile distribution looks interesting too.

Duncan90
this is not an expansion for the standard Carcassonne.
"Carcassonne - Über Stock und Stein" is a spin-off game.
The publisher HiG and the author KJW created this game. It is a commissioned work for the Ministry of health. Some schools will be equipped with this game.

Hi Duncan90.

Sorry to hear that you no longer seem to have any interest in collecting Carcassonne.

Personally, I don’t think it’s fair to say that KJW/ HiG are “out of good ideas”. A lot of people said that when The Catapult came out but there have been some great expansions and spin-off games released since then.

Even if you don’t like the sound of some of the mechanics behind “Over Hill and Dale” I think it’s worth staying in touch to see what comes along next. Abandoning something out of principle would be a shame if this means you miss out on the enjoyment of something else that comes along afterwards.

All the best for the future anyway, regardless of what you choose to do.

I have to agree that Duncan90 does have a point.

With the original format base game and all box expansions 1 through 9 now out of print with Z-man games it seems inevitable that there will be no more “boxed”  expansions for this game in the original format.   :'(

I can imagine that the single small format tile sheets will still come out in Nation themed format for the monasteries (available only by mail order) but these introduce no new significant game play so have no appeal for me.

If HiG had plans to the contrary then I would expect that they would have dropped some vague hint to “expect something for the original Carcassonne sometime soon”   If anyone has picked up on something like this then please share.

Personally I am still having more fun than you can “shake a stick at" by plodding away at my own expansions.   :@ :@

I also have more spare tiles put by for making expansions than even Paul would want to admit to.   :)

The Carcassonne-on-Tour team was testing the possible working dress for the exhibition "modell-hobby-spiel" for Leipzig. They will present the new spin-off game "Carcassonne - Über Stock und Stein".

I just tried it in Essen. Due to my "No Carccassonne Spin-Off policy" (I don't own any and don't want to), I really wanted to dislike it but I failed: This game is good!

The mechanism that allows you to "walk the trails" if you extend a road is cool: It makes the roads more valuable. Also, I like that the one that closes a city gets to choose first one of the fruit tokens, even though both players score. I played against my girlfriend and we had a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend this game.  :(y)

As I said, it's a good game but I will maintain my "No Carccassonne Spin-Off policy" because I have just too many games, and I feel that this one (or any other Carc Spin-Offs I'd buy) would end up sitting on a shelf, unfortunately. I own already all Carcassonne expansions for the base game and this offers me more than enough replay value.

I pass.  :)

I have updated the Sizing Information (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=28.msg29559#msg29559) for Carcassonne - über Stock und Stein.

(The official name for zman games is: Carcassonne - over Hill and Dale - but in German the name of the game is not "Carcassonne - über Berg und Tal")

It's the edition for the bavarian ministry of health. At the moment there is no infomation whether there will be more print runs for them.
There are extra Turkish rules and it's another box. The game pieces are exact the same.
