Title: Inns and Cathedrals garden / field
Post by: herts10 on November 02, 2020, 03:31:48 PM
We've been playing Carcassonne with Inns and Cathedrals for a while now, but without the Abbot (as we have the original 2001 base game).

There is a piece in Inns and Cathedrals with a garden in the middle of 4 cities.  Since we have no Abbots, I have always treated it as a field, creating an opportunity for a farm serving 4 cities.  The rules say it is a field with a garden in it, which seem to support this interpretation.

Now I have bought a new base game and am looking forward to playing with the Abbot for the first time.  Does this piece now only operate as a place for an Abbot, or should players get a choice and be able to place a farmer there instead?

Thanks

Hi herts10,

Welcome to the forum!

In the old edition (C1), you could claim any of the 4 city segments (if unoccupied) or the field. In the new edition (C2) you also have all these options and, additionally, placing an abbot on the garden.

So you are moving your games to C2? What do you think about it compared to C1?

Cheers!

Thanks very much.  That's great we have the option.

Not played C2 yet, but as a rule I preferred the artwork in our newer Inns and Cathedrals set, and I was getting frustrated that the artwork between the two didn't match (first world problems I know!).

Also pleased to be able to try out things like the Abbot and add further expansions which will also all match as well.

Between editions, there are differences in color affecting cities but above all fields...  :'(

So which expansions do you have and which new ones do you want to try? Are you aiming at small games or at Mega-carcassonne sessions?

By the way, just in case you don't have it in your radar, you can check WICA for rules and clarifications here:

C1 has a more relaxed look. C2 is more lively and noisier to my eyes... In the end, your brain filters out anything not relevant to the game, so all that extra eye candy vanishes in the heat of the game...

If I had a print on a wall it'd look more like C1. If I have a game on my table I want it to look like C2.
