"irregularities" in Ticket to Ride world championship final
« on: November 10, 2014, 03:34:50 AM »
I’ve only played it a couple of times but I imagine many of us here will be familiar with "Ticket to Ride". Furthermore, I fully expect that some here will already be familiar with the controversy over this year’s Ticket to Ride world championship too; notably that the person who won it - Erwin Pauelsen - has had his title taken away from him in light of certain irregularities that came to light during the final game but which weren’t picked up by any of the officials at the time.

Even if you’re not into Ticket To Ride, as someone who is interested in top-level competition I found the following to be quite an interesting read in terms of what constitutes cheating and the insight gained into what goes on inside the heads of some of the most competitive board gamers in the world...

Press release from Days of Wonder regarding the Ticket to Ride world championship final:

Response from Erwin Pauelsen to above press release and subsequent accusations

Response from the other finalist who Erwin Pauelsen competed against and who was subsequently given the title in light of his disqualification

What is your opinion on it?

It's clear:

Who is cheating will lose his trophy as the winner of a championship.

It's clear:

That certainly seems to be the case.

The main reason I was interested in this though, is that regardless of what actually happened (I don't suppose we'll ever know for sure), whether innocent mistakes can be made that some people would see as cheating, even if they weren't intentional. Not saying that this is what happened here, but it still raises the question.

Somebody said that the main difference between cheating and making a mistake is your intention, but since it's impossible to tell what someone's intention was other than by asking them this can rarely help settle whether someone has cheated or not.

Thanks kettlefish. I never knew TTR had such a following!

I'd love to be able to watch live streaming of world championship Carcassonne matches taking place, and being able to discuss them with people online while they're taking place.
