My Impossible Dream...
« on: February 09, 2015, 05:36:51 AM »
OK, here goes... this is something I wish I had the skills to make real.  Hence, "impossible". But I thought I'd throw it out there with the hopes that just maybe, someone might be there to run with it. Or let me down gently that it is truly impossible.

I dream of seeing a computer version of our beloved Carcassonne that is 3D. Not 3D as in glasses etc. The tiles would be have solid features on them, i.e. city walls, roads, etc. And they would be rotatable as well as zoomable. You'd place them on a three dimensional virtual play field, that you can view from any angle. Something like the XBox version, but with actual walls, etc.

I know this would entail a heck of a lot of programming. But wouldn't it be nice? Something like JCloister, with solid 3D tiles. The old PC computer version of Carcassonne had 3D meeples, actual animated figures. But the rest of the tile details was "flat".

Sigh.  Am I tilting at windmills?  :-[

I guess with enough time, money and programming skills this is a quite possible and pretty cool project. ;)

WoW. Thanks for the link.

This is close to the idea. But it still plays with "real" flat tiles. I'm thinking more along the lines of a tile with all the features represented by small 3d models. So, a tile with a city wall would have a wall actually on the tile, as an object on the tile. You could then view the wall from different angles and different point of views. Think of a virtual 3D printed tile. When you complete a city, you have a little 3D city you can rotate and zoom in and out. Inns would be tiny 3D structures on the tiles.

I will look into the simulator you mentioned, though. It looks very interesting.  Thanks.

Then you should check out NCIS: Los Angeles episode that aired a week ago or so!

Don't wanna spoil it, though you may guess what they use in that eposide, but you definately need to see what kind of 3D printer they were using!!! *omg*

I guess you are looking for something like this: (I know, not Carcassonne, but still quite cool.)

This is also the reason why I'm pretty sure that one could do the same with Carcassonne. ;)

3D printed meeples.  :D

What more reason do you need?

Yes. Yes. Yes, Safari.  That version of Catan is exactly what I meant for our beloved game. Not only is there the detail on the pieces, but also animation, i.e. running waterfalls, windblown trees. Why oh why couldn't that have been Carcassonne?  :( Just imagine how our cities would look. Or the rivers.

Oh well... That's the great thing about dreaming. It costs nothing.  But, gosh.. wouldn't it be nice if we had such a version.

BTW, 3D printing is great!  I had the tile grids from Thingiverse printed by Sculpteo. And they work great. It makes shifting the playing field easy. We consider them a necessary accessory. A "necessory"??? Sorry 'bout that. Couldn't resist.   O:-)

Why not a 3D version of JCloisterZone?  You might need glasses, but the impact would be amazing!

The game would be smart enough to know what to do when two pieces are together - rivers running from one tile to the next as the tiles are placed, etc.
