Title: Favouritism Poll #8 - Spiel Tiles
Post by: Decar on December 28, 2018, 11:32:48 AM
We've not had a favourtism poll for ages and ages and with all the talk about Spiel Tiles, I thought it would be a good time for people to vote of their favourite.

Spiel tiles have been given out since 2014 at Essen Spiel when making purchases at an HiG booth.

Back in 2014 (it seems like only yesterday), the first Spiel Tile depicting a gaming Hall and HiG's booth in the centre was put on display in a CCCR tile.

In 2015, we saw a really useful RRRR tile where the local towns folk are playing board games.  I wonder how many travelers stop for a quick game or two.

In 2016, we see two knights fighting in a CCCC tile.  I think this might be the first time HiG have released a tile in this configuration, with only a single city placement.  I doubt I'd ever place a farmer in that one-city farm it produces.

In 2017, We see some villagers preparing their goods, possibly at an inspection before entering the city gates of a CFFF tile.  One of the carts seems a little too heavy for the donkey though, it looks to be way off the ground!  I wonder if any of them have any contraband boardgames C:-)

In 2018, A new set of tiles were released!  This shows a statue of Hans riding his pig in the centre of a roundabout, also another donkey is causing chaos:

I find it very difficult to decide between 2017 and 2018.  I love the statue in 2018, but I also love the chaos of city life captured in 2017 and the comedic value of the donkey floating in the air.  So 2017 gets my vote.

Which tile do you like the most?
Do you use them in your games?
Have you noticed any nice things going on in the tiles?

Voting is open for the next 7 days, but if you're joining us late, feel free to post your opinions!

I went for the 2014 tile.
I always find city tiles more interesting than roads, and like this one!
I prefer it over the 2016 tile, as the 'old-new art' city colour is less prominent in this one

In the 2016 tile, a bystander has caught the attention of the knight on the left.  I can't tell for sure, but I believe the child is giving the thumbs down.  This could be her saying that the knight should kill the other knight, the duel isn't very exciting, or that the new art is absolutely terrible.

In 2017, this matter is settled as the little girl is making the same gesture.  It is doubtful that the little girl hates airborne donkeys AND duels, so we now can assume she dislikes the new art.

In 2018, the little girl has moved on to other games.

Also, of note the man in the orange cloak with the black belt appears in every tile with the exception of the 2016 tiles.  There are multiple other people that appear in multiple tiles, but he and the girl stick out the most.

orange cloak dude with black belt appears in 16, top centre, same art as 15 top left!

I think I was confused because there is a gold colored cloak with belt guy and an orange cloak with belt guy.  They must shop at the same cloth stand in Traders and Builders.

15 and 18 are a bit the same (roads). I like the 17 tile the most, due to the trouble in front of the gate. 14 is for me to crowded and busy. 16 is the one which is by far the most different one.

What will 19 bring us?!:)

Thanks for that rundown of the individual tiles Decar! I liked the humorous descriptions of whats depicted on each tile too!

I chose the 2016 tile as I love a good scrap. Especially one that's in the middle of a city tile. I also like that I slightly cheatingly used this tile to win (possibly) a game of Amazonas against Decar while we were in Essen in 2016.

Second favourite is the 2014 tile as I like the busyness and all the different colours.

I add all five into games when I can. No particular favourite though.

That was such a great game. Especially given your next tile. I'm glad I nabbed a picture for my rather long report:

I realise now i didn't write up this year's trip. :(
Maybe I'll get chance to jot down a few memories!

Ideally it's between Spiel'16 or '18 for their more normal art / less jokey art.

I haven't played with my '17 tile yet, I don't believe I played the base version since I got it.  :( I need to get some serious funds to buy the rest.

I prefer the 15 Spiel tile because it fits pretty well with the old style. The rest doesn't work with my old art collection.

Great conversation topic. For me, it has to be the 2014 tile since it was the first and actually depicts a gaming convention such as Essen, so it is the perfect giveaway for the event. It’s also the only one I was able to get so I’m a bit partial in that regard. I do like the uniqueness of the 2016 tile too, and like how the 2015 tile could blend in with my Carc I style.

After 25 votes the results are in.

2016—The Duel- 6 (24%)
2018—Hans' Piggy Roundabout - 6 (24%)
2015—Boardgames Cross Road - 3 (12%)
2017—Donkey Fiasco - 3 (12%)
2014—Game Hall 1 - 4 (16%)
None of them—I'm boring and only like old style tiles 3 (12%)

Pole positions go to The Duel and the Piggy Roundabout.

All these tiles are wonderful, long may they continue to be printed!

I'll keep the poll open, so feel free to continue voting, but consider this favourtism poll closed.  Thanks for voting.

This topic has been calm for a while. But I want to open it up again for discussion. When I looked closely at the Spiel '15 and '18 tiles, I noticed that 2 gaming tables were the same. (A & B) The more I looked, the more similarities I saw. Not only in those two tiles, but in all Spiel tiles.

The letters in white are the characters that come back in Spiel '18. The numbers in yellow are similarities in the other Spiel tiles.
It is a nice concept to have characters come back and put them in a different context.

I hope I haven't missed anyone.

Which character would you like to see in Spiel '19?
