Title: Place farmer on a single tile field
Post by: Gerry on August 12, 2014, 11:18:48 AM
If I draw and place any of the single field tiles eg EH from Inns and Cathedrals (a tile with 4 city segments on the edges and green space enclosed in the centre), can I claim it as a farm?

Absolutely. I love, LOVE taking the farm between the four city pieces. I love the idea of this tiny farm between these cities and it looks really nice on the tile. It's actually a weakness of mine, because I claim this farm too often (sometimes against my better judgement), just because I think it looks cool.

Thinking more sensibly about it, claiming this farm gives you a maximum of 12 points and obviously no one else can join your farm. If the tile is drawn early in the game, the possible 12 points in exchange for the loss of a meeple is probably not worth it. But if it comes later in the game but still with enough tiles left to complete some of the cities, it can be worth it (depending on the particular situation in that game, of course).

Yup, agree with the above two. It's fun, especially then when you try and make all those 4 city pieces small, seperate cities..  >:D

And with the cherry on top, you convert one or two into castles.  :@

There are tiles with four city fragments, and with three city fragments, that all but guarantee you lots of points at the end.

I find that these are best used later in the game, or with a portal.  Being a man or two short for a long game can really hurt.

I also find that these are the primary targets of dragons (no place to run or hide!!!) and towers.  If either or both of these expansions are in use, there is seldom a farmer still there by the end of a game....   :(

Also, there is the strategy that if the other player grabs one of these farms, you do your best to convert all fragments to just one city, thus reducing the total points of the farmer. 'Specially in a four or more player game, actually getting the full points at the end of the game depends a lot on luck.
