Title: Follow-up World Cup 2017
Post by: MrNumbers on February 09, 2018, 01:50:36 PM
I have been asked by TheSteveAllen to post this on his behalf, as he is of the firm belief that it will attract more attention and support if it were to be posted by an global moderator, rather than an ordinary member :D

Over that last couple of weeks, since being tragically 'ousted' from the Carcassonne Central World Cup, I have been enthusiastically testing the playing set-ups for the Quarter Final, Semi-Final and Final stages of the competition along with other friends on this forum who have also shown that they have an interest in trying them out.
As a result of these matches, I have decided to come up for a special competition for us 'Also-rans' so that we can enjoy the benefits of the contest without having to worry too much about the results.
The idea is that anyone who completed the group stages of the competition (15 of us, I believe), should be allowed to enter this follow-up tournament with the game configurations being played by those who qualified.
Participants will be given a set of 'fixtures' which they can play, possibly 5 each, to be completed at the same time as the 'real' final match.
An independent arbitrator (possibly MrNumbers) will create this fixture list, which will be a list of opponents and game configurations e.g. Thodekey v Halfling (SF configuration).
Participants will then play as many of their fixtures as possible until the 'real' tournament ends.
Points will be awarded as per the scores plus 30 points for a win, e.g. Thodekey 245 : Halfling 270 scores 245 points to Thodekey and 270 points against, with 300 points to Halfling and 245 points against. The league table will be in Points difference order eg. Halfling has 55 points, Thodekey has -25 points from this fixture.
This is designed to encourage games to be played, with the winner uncertain until the very last fixture.
Exact details are still to be clarified, but could you please reply to this post if you would like to participate.
A further bonus, is that we will also be playtesting for Farin at the same time, which helps us all.

Thanks for helping me with this MrNumbers. I hope that we get a few entrants to this very quickly so that we can make a start.

Rather obviously, I am in!

Halfling has not yet signed up, so you are still unbeaten!  ;)

Good news halfling! I hope that we get a few more soon!

There is a new testing version of JCZ to try if you are interested. I should be available this evening if you are?

In that case you might make President yet!!  ;D

Welcome to the fold Chooselife. We appear to be a very 'European' bunch so far - I hope that we get a few from North and South America! Possibly even Mozambique!

That is good news Rosco, now we are 6 (an even number) so we can make a start to the tournament.

If there are no more entries by the end of today, I will ask MrNumbers to make the draw and get the competition under way.

Thanks for letting me know Adror, it is a pity that you won't be joining in this time, but I'm sure that there will be plenty of other opportunities.

It looks like we will have to push on with the 6 of us:-

Chooselife
Halfling
Hounk
Rosco
TheSteveAllen
Thodekey

MrNumbers will be doing the 'random draw' for us tomorrow, and I will be publishing a fixture list and rules.

Oh it's not the end of today yet, right? 7 is a better number  ;D
But otherwise I will just skip it

No problem at all, jungleboy is waiting on the substitute bench to make it 8, so you are very much in.

Welcome aboard Sinscerly.

Tnx Steve,

Well I don't get it how the competition will be played, but I think I will find out when we'll start.
Also still feeling sorry for getting Dan fooling me with writing Old on your secret santa package :-[

Nobody knows how it is going to work exactly just yet, as I am still discussing it with MrNumbers. The idea, however, is that you play as many games as you can using the QF, SF and Final set-ups from the 'real' world cup. You have to play at least one of each, but you can play up to 7 (assuming there are 8 of us). Instead of points for winning, which means that, after a few games the tournament can only be won by a couple of people, it is based on points difference. This means that you can narrowly lose every game except 1, and win the other 1, and you can win the tournament!

The idea is to get everyone playing 'for the hell of it' using interesting collections of expansions. It should leave us all eagerly awaiting another game.

Will elaborate tomorrow.

PS. I am 60 tomorrow, so Dan was correct!  ;D

Just to let everyone know that entry to this competition is now closed, and has now been launched.

Please use the following thread from now onwards for anything to do with this tournament.
