Title: World Record Attempt 2016
Post by: Paul on January 27, 2016, 08:48:33 AM
It's official!

This March I will be hosting a world record attempt in a convention here in Sweden called GothCon. Info will be available at gothcon.se (http://gothcon.se) soon but anything there will be available here as well. I will try to update the thread as progression goes with info and images.

Unfortunately I'm in a bit of a ruch out of the house but thought I at least upload what I've done today... Sorting tiles. x_x

And more importantly what will you do with them all after the event? (If anyone has a spare set of original artwork tiles going spare... I might be interested :))

I'm not sure you would believe me but this is what really happened: I sent an E-mail and two weeks later they arrived at my doorstep. :D

I'm not sure yet. My cousin wants me to keep it all but I could consider myself selling away spare parts to get back some of the money invested in this. I'll also be giving away prizes during the event.

This week hasn't been much newsworthy report, mostly sorting tiles to prepare for a mini-game test. We're trying out various game styles to find a good fast paced game progression to manage the 3 day availability we have to complete the game.

Our first test run will be posted next week with results and images.

This game style will concist of pre-sorted and then shuffled base game sets with the starter tile always on top of the pile. Opponents (contestants during the convention) will get one of these and I will get my own randomly shuffled pile which can not only the base game but also expansion tiles.
The idea is for the contestant to score as much as possible while I am trying to disrupt and ruin his chances. :) Or, I will try to score as well. This will be decided during the day we will have the test game itself.

Each day we will summarize those with the most score and award them a prize.

The thought for this idea is to keep the rules as simple as possible for those that want to participate but don't know the rules.

Is each player getting 72-base games tiles in a bag?

I never thought of having a bag but this is really an interesting idea! One would get a bag and a starter tile aside to place anywhere and go from there.

with a large number of players I suspect you want a large starting area too.  You could probably build a small landscape - Perhaps that reads Goth-Con?
Title: Re: World Record Attempt 2016

Or do you start small (with 6 - or 8 - players) and as the landscape spreads - introduce second/third/fourth/... teams (of six - or eight)?

This all sounds very exciting. Considering it’s an official Carcassonne world record attempt though, are there any rules you need to adhere to in order to ensure that it’s officially recognised? C:-) Not suggesting that this is what you’re doing, but if you dive into your own rules too deeply then it could be argued that it isn’t actually a game of Carcassonne, you’re just playing a game that uses Carcassonne tiles (albeit quite a lot of them)...

Also, since this seems like a great opportunity to generate a little bit of publicity for Carcassonne Central, would you like some of our business cards to either hand out to interested parties or perhaps leave in shot of any photo opportunities? If somebody happens to find one of yours photos lying around on the internet somewhere and wants to find out more about it, knowing that you are affiliated with Carcassonne Central by the presence of a little business card might be a great way of helping them to connect with the wider community.

Due to time restraints, we won't be focusing on "art". It will start with a massive river that I will lay out randomish to give it a good spread and give contestants a decent start.

The game would follow as much as the original rules as possible with a few exceptions:

• There will (most likely) be no farmers.

• The game will be continuous having me and other two arrangers as one color and contestants another color.

• When there are no contestants, we arrangers ourself will play out tiles using contestant bags and score.

• To give a fair chance, each bag will have the same set of 71 tiles + 1 starter tile aside while the arrangers have  mixed bag of expansions and base game tiles.

I got a few. 5 or 6 at least, that I am sure of. I'd have stacks in boxes and throw in one when needed, so I wouldn't need that many bags, even though it would have looked cool having a heap for display!

Today we had a meeting planning the event and finally had a few test runs. A lot of things has been changed, almost everything planned in fact!

Later tonight or tomorrow there will be photos and review session report for the games and what we've come up with so far. Rest assure, we have a lot of kinks to work out still. x_x

And so, finally, an update! What was expected to be posted on Monday got dragged a bit, so sorry about that.

Last Saturday, Feb 6, we, the arrangers, had a meeting to organize the world record attempt. We asked ourselves questions, made plans day by day, talked about priorities etc.

Our main objective is, by the end of the convention, to have laid out all the tiles. This was something we agreed upon immediately.

I had hoped to play with as many expansions as possible that don't require a lot of rules, nor confict with one another in terms of us looking up the rules constantly. The other two arrangers, my sister and a friend are not well versed in the rules so it was a relief for them. I did have to convince them that we will be using The Tower and The Princess and the Dragon.

Unfortunately, I do not have 10k tiles if I am not using almost every tile that I have, which we will make a little compromise:
We will be using all the tiles from all expansions, but only pick out a few rules from a few expansions to play with. You'll find out later below why!

Our first draft, what seems plausible to succeed with in playing this game without major interruptions, have these expansion rules added:
•Inns and Cathedrals - The Lake and Cathedral only, no extra followers are to be used
•The Princess and The Dragon - Full content
•The Tower - Full content
•Traders and Builders - Full content
•The Flyers - Full content

The River(s)
This is still not set how we are to proceed with yet. To have one 200+ tiles long river or smaller rivers.
The idea for several rivers will be having them pre stacked with only the starter river thrown into the draw bag. When one of these are drawn, the game halts to play out a river set. It must be placed on the outskirt of the main board and follow outwards (flow of river) but else played out as normal, with us taking turns etc.

Some other info:
•Yes, we will be using a draw bag of some sort! Official one, I doubt it, duh... :)
•We will not be playing with the farmer rules due to time restraint
•We will not be using any extra wooden figures such as the barn, builder, mayor etc, again due to the time restraint we have.

A test game using expansion rules we've planned to use (except The Flyers):
(http://sydby.com/carcassonne/screenshots/20160127w_r_a/20160206_WorldRecord_Meeting1__IMG_0005__1024.jpg) (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/screenshots/20160127w_r_a/20160206_WorldRecord_Meeting1__IMG_0005__2048.jpg)

Playing this game we tried a nice method of keeping score. By not calculating the score on the spot, rather at the end of each day, saves a lot of time. We might end up updating the score on several occations during a single day as well.
Each time someone scores, they add the number followed by type in a squared box on a sheet of paper which us arrangers (players) each carry one of.

Example: Scoring 12 points for a city we would write 12s (12 stad, which means 12 city in Swedish). v = road (väg) and k = cloister (kloster).

Final score and some stats:
Yellow (me): 307 points from
•12 completed cities (largest 45 points) and 1 unfinished
•6 completed roads (largest were 2x 12 points each)
•4 completed cloisters and 1  unfinished with 8 points
•2 farm field of 3 points and 27 points
•20 points (total) from cloth and barrels

Black(my sister): 181 points
Blue(friend): 196 points

As shown for Yellow, you can easily track how many of each type and even how many (not shown in this example) 4 points cities were made etc. This will give some great statistics by the end of the convention!
Total time played was 1 hour 47 minutes which resulted in almost 90 hours of game time were we to play in this speed with 10k tiles. Bear in mind we did take it a bit slow and were chatting often during the game.
More on this in the next update, where we you'll find out how we plan to play and make due with the time we have.

Next update will feature what else we've planned, like the calendar agenda, filming, and setup!

We've added a hint on this in the Facebook event that was created. The game will be more co-op eventually having us on the opposite side of the board itself focusing on that area.

One really has no idea just how insane this will be so we really have to think outside the box for this game! x_x

Update: In order for us to manage in time, we estimate no more than 18 seconds per player turn in order to succeed in placing 10k tiles in 50 hours non-stop.

Awake for 70 hours straight, I doubt that. We're going to have friends take over a few hours while we take shifts in resting. :) At least this is the plan, everything not yet decided.

70 hours isn't so bad. When Mrs_danisthirty gave birth to our first child, the labour lasted around 4 - 5 days in total during which time I got barely 5 or 6 hours of sleep and she got even less. I'd much rather have been playing Carcassonne than noting down contraction times etc... :D

Title: Re: World Record Attempt 2016
Post by: Paul on February 21, 2016, 02:30:54 PM
Today, Feb 21, 2016 we had a nother go at Carcassonne world record attempt mini games!

The 2 games lasted 39 and 34 minutes respectively. As before, we were 3 players as black, blue and yellow. Keeping with the previous idea of scoring but also adding more tiles to the table. We counted 306 tiles, including all 3 versions of the river. (River I, II and from the Big Box 5.) The photo below show the endgame board without the rivers and wooden figures as we remembered taking the shot after we already started packing. Woops!

The first game of 39 minutes for 306 tiles calculates an estimated 7 seconds per tile (a full turn) which is pretty impressive and would end the game at 21 hours or so. But not without tweaks.

This is a short list of how the game will be played:
•The Count will be our starter tile or Wheel of fortune, as a marker for where the "center" is
•We will be using tiles from most of the expansions but not the actual rules. See Tiles to be used
•Rules to implement are those stated in the previous entry (Inns and Cathedrals, Traders and Builders etc.)
•River tiles will be pre-shuffled with the river starter tile in draw pile. More on this further down under The river tiles
•When the game board has grown large, we will be using free will tile placement. More on this below under Game play mechanics
•The game will be more co-op than competing against one another explained in the section Goal for this event

Tiles to be used
We will be using tiles from almost every expansion using the old graphic art. This mainly due to that I don't have enough tiles to hit the 10k mark else. As most of the rules are optional anyway we don't feel that it actually breaks any rules. This also allows us to more easily fill in gaps that occur as we progress.
Some of the expansions that will be used in this manner are the mini expansions such as The Ferries and Bandits as well as other larger expansions such as Hills and Sheep, Abbey and Mayor, The Catapult (yaay! ;) ), GQ11, Wheel of Fortune and Castles, Bridges and Bazaar.
There will not be any special wooden figure (bridge, mayor, large follower, builder etc) nor any tokens (castles, little buildings, half'n'half tiles, German monasteries). Only 7 follower each! More on this in the Goal for this event below.

The river tiles
There will be over 10 river sets in the game. The river starter tile will be mixed into the draw pile among all the other tiles.
Whenever one of these tiles are drawn, that player places it on one of the edges of the entire board and then takes a pre-shuffled river tile stack (of 11 tiles) where the bottom tile is always the river end tile. He or she then places them outwards, away from the board, one by one and may choose to place a follower wherever he or she sees fits. The river must flow outwards and can turn sideways but never make a U-turn, not even if there is a straight road in between the tiles (which is allowed in the official rules).
This is to prevent the river ending up being stuck, which by following the above rule can't happen. Some of the other arrangers can't see this to be true so I put in a wager that if one of the river flows gets stuck I'm giving away one of the Ark of the Covenant I have! :D Yes, I am that confident.
Note that any pre-shuffled stack with River II always always starts with the T-section river tile placed as in the official rules and have a river end in the random part of the stack.

The shaded river starter tiles in the image above shows its legal placement for its current board. (Fan expansions won't be used during the world record event.)

Example above shows the difference between official rules and the world record attempt tweak, having the river forced outwards, it can never collide or get stuck.

Game play mechanics
There will be some hours during the game, where we enter the free will phase part of it. This means that we are allowed to place tiles as we see fit without waiting for another player to set his or her tile.
One simply draws a tile, do one's turn, and then draw another tile and so forth. As we are playing a co-op game, we will be focusing on scoring on our side of the board avoiding our "opponents" area. This may not even take effect at all and mostly depends on the pace of the game later in.
We tried this on today's 2 games we played and it was a lot of fun! Sometimes we completed other player's cities or roads, heck even cloisters, mostly to fill in the gaps. Even though we help others to score, we can always score something for ourselves, so it even things out somewhat.

Goal for this event
The main goal for this event is to have set out all 10.000 tiles before the convention ends. Of course, just laying down tiles without a deeper purpose wouldn't be a lot of fun; Naturally we want somewhat of a game being played. Unfortunately the time restriction and the few amount of players prevent for a proper 10k tiles game with more rules. I had to fight just to keep the Tower and Dragon rules in!
After the convention, when things settle down, there will be more stuff to do with the tiles. So don't worry, I'm not ready to sell off my collection just yet! ;)

That's it for meeting 2. Stay tuned for more updates later, hopefully already next week!

Paul

The two game sessions results:

Game 1
Black at 292 points with largest feat being a 63 points city.
Blue at 218 points with largest feat being 27 points city.
Yellow(me) at 259 points with largest feat being a 24 points road (with inn).

Game 2
Black at 156 points with largest feat being a 30 points city.
Blue at 238 points with largest feat being many 2 tiled cities.
Yellow(me) at 351 points with largest feat being a 42 points city.

Just for the attempt and regardless of the outcome, I gave you a merit.  Not for organizing and playing in such an awesome Carcassonne game, but for cleaning it up.  I can't imagine counting out all of those tiles and putting them all back in the correct boxes.   8)

Suprisingly this doesn't take that long. When I first sorted 300 tiles by expansion (alone) it took only 15 mins or so.
With 1500+ tiles it took about 10-15 mins counting them into piles of 30 (3 persons) and put them into base game boxes with 600 tiles each. We of course didn't sort by expansion this time but it would only add 5-10 more mins. :)

With 10,000 tiles, it is going to take you a few hours.  Hopefully you have more volunteers.   Too bad I can't stop by and "help myself" to some of those tiles... err umm help clean up.  Let's see, fly to Copenhagen and its only a 3 hour drive through the cool bridge/tunnel.  Afterward drive 3 more hours to Oslo to knock 3 countries off of my bucket list.....  No way would I do that in March  :-\

We finished another game test today. Time was good with 10 secs a turn average. Promise image will follow this time when we get home. With a new variant I think we finally are prepared.

We've had some more planning past 2 weeks and mostly it's been about how to manage this within the time frame we have. Here are some changes:

•We will be using a variant starter setup. The Wheel of Fortune tile is still the starter which makes a beacon when the game becomes large. But, instead of the river tiles being in the draw mix, we decided to make four rivers start from the very first instant following the same rules, flowing outwards away from the WoF tile.
•The time frame for the actual game has shifted. We now plan to start on Thursday, during the pre-opening event and then play during the nights as well to end the game on Saturday. This will leave us with Sunday as a free day to play a game with several expansions so people can see some of these in action.

As we finally reached 10 seconds a turn average, we're confident we will manage this! :)

Yes. During the event we will be provided with the biggest room and tables will be provided. Our area is 6 x 8 meters. Hopefully we can make it as squared as possible.

This just in: I need more tiles! I lack 50 according to last count. I don't think there is a base game available with the old art but there are still a few expansions out there. The Tower and Abbey and Mayor at the local store for 10 Euro for example.

Update: Also, Big Box 5 (7-8 player) is available again with over 50 in stock at the local store for 55 Euro. Might be a better option.

So I got BB5 last Friday and now I am back on track with 10k+ tiles. Tomorrow we'll be doing another test run, hopefully last one for it's 10 days left before the event.

After the event, I will be selling off most of the excess tiles though I might do more projects with them meanwhile.

I was also thinking about making sort of booster packs people could buy to get random tiles. If this is a viable idea, I'd welcome any suggestions! I would also include wooden figures and tokens with this idea.

Today I finally got a confirmed count on how many tiles I actually have. Pleased that it is in fact over 10k but VERY close to the tip over. Not going to reveal the actual number for this may end up in a competition. ;)

This weekend we'll have another meeting for final arrangements and what is to be expected during the event, schedules etc. I'll post a summary here afterwards.

Our meeting has just ended. We did all that we could in regards to plan the event but much will be finalized on Thursday evening when we get access to the room where we'll be playing.

A test run for the live streaming was also done today and an event for this on YouTube has been set up.

An announcement a few hours before the stream will be posted here and on FaceBook. Most likely will be during mid-day and sometime again in the evening each day during the event.

Hi Paul,
how many people will play this mega game?
Are more than one player there for each players colour?
In the old mega Carcassonne games there were players teams (3-4 players for each colour)

We will be 3 players each having their own colour. Only us three will play and organize the entire event.

How many tiles are in this practice run Paul?

Post by: Paul on March 21, 2016, 12:48:12 PM
Alright! Here comes probably the final info until the event starts.

First off, there are still a lot that we haven't decided yet because we haven't had access to the room where we will be playing the game. All we know is, that it's a classroom roughly the size of 6 x 8 meters and that there will be tables available. Once we have access (during the pre-launch on Thursday) we will assess the situation on how to proceed with lodging, and refurnishing.

What we think so far is, that we will have tables set lying upright on the back end where we can get some rest (and sleep) so we don't have to leave the room, but instead just taking a few rest periods now and then to quickly start playing again.

Food will be provided by the convention for free which we will utilize but also have friends deliver meals for us during certain hours. We will be stocking up on water bottles and energy drinks (with moderate consumption).

Our friend and I participating will be there from Thursday all the way thru Sunday while my sister, the third participant will head home during the night shifts. I will then be taking over her part of the game.

As mentioned in earlier post, we will be playing friendly co-op which means there will be no trapping and we'll help each other out to fill in the games. As shown during the live game, the result is undisputable as I yet again have turned out to be the winner (99% sure, haven't counted the score yet, but I have almost twice as many finished score segments than the other two players), and this even when I helped them out finishing cities the size of 40 points and more without any scores to myself.
This is mostly to save time or else we'd be looking at a weeklong game. Also, we want to fill any holes that arise as we are bound to a limited space. Plus, it all looks so beautiful!

The starter setup was also changed this final round with 4 T-junctions from previous 2 (see image). The same rule stands, the river has to flow outwards and an additional rule is, there has to be at least 2 tile spaces between any two rivers. With common sense we'll be laying out the rivers so it won't clash with anything. Another advantage playing friendly co-op. :)
A total of 135 river tiles, including starter, ender, T-junction etc was used during the final run and will be used during the event itself. Laid out at first and then we proceed with the regular tiles.
There will be one stack of random river tiles we will be draw from and place it on any of the 8 river segments.

Each base game box contains 600 tiles. Once the board has grown so large that we each have our own side of the "world" we will be using a different method of taking turns, but nothing that will interfere with the core rules.
We will each have a box of 600 tiles (random content each) and use it to do our turn as fast as we can. He or she that finish first can then take a break or talk to people that stop by etc. Since we won't be interfering with where other players have placed their meeple, we feel this is a viable option and to avoid the confusion on who's turn it is. Those of you that watched the video probably understood some of the halts we made in the game as we were trying to figure out who's turn it was.

The schedule for game time will be, starting on Thursday, continuing through the night with a little break in the morning.
At 8:00 my sister will arrive and we will continue playing until we get hungry and then continue again and so forth. It will continue Friday night and we intend to finish the game on Saturday.
With the improved time we took each turn today (March 21, 2016), we are confident we'll finish in time.

On Sunday, we will be playing a standard game with the base game and some of the expansions, to show people how the game really is played. This or we use the Winter Edition for a standard game. :) Depends how badly our brains have scrambled.

Due to time restraints, I used the CAR's first page and printed it out in A3 paper format, that we will hang next to the door. Although the image is poorly taken with my phone's camera, the A3 poster is beautiful!
Other things we plan on having is a setup of various boxes of Carcassonne and its spin-offs decorating the room.

And now for today's game result (without the final scoring, no way up to do that today ;) ):
We played a total of 1335 tiles including all the river tiles.
The game took 3 hours and 5 minutes.
Each turn took roughly 8,315 seconds to complete. This means we could in theory finish the entire game of 10 000 tiles in about 23 hours. x_x

During the event I will be Yellow (no surprise there!) and Robert will be Blue. My sister will be using black. Each have 7 standard followers.

There are still some things I've left out, as I am unsure we'll be able to implement them. Guess we'll just have to see!

Thanks for reading!
Paul

Was fun to watch you today, I did wish the camera was a little close to the action. I hope that works out, but I know you'll have a logistic nightmare ahead of you.

Hopefully you'll have chance to read your live chat too.  Your video was in the background at work, and i popped the video to the front to see your friend staring at the camera, it made me jump!

I have a feeling there is a limit on the length of a live feed (4-5hrs) you might want to schedule more than one ahead of the game, I'm not sure though I've never done it but that's what Dice Tower said you might want to check.

Yeah. Robert, the other participant, will bring an extension cord next time. I will then be able to hover the camera around more freely. I will also use the GoPro camera with the headband strap for an "my eyes view" part on occation and sometimes use the shelfie-stick to pan the field. The GoPro videos will not be live streamed but uploaded later.

The limit is 8 hours live stream at a time. We will not be streaming the entire time but schedule streams probably 2-3 times a day, depending on the internet access. If they won't give us the school's wireless, we'll be streaming using the phone's internet, which is pretty decent (up to 10 mbit I believe).
I will post here the next stream a few hours before it starts. Each stream has it's own link. Or, you could simply go to my channel on YouTube (OnePointSystem) and see the events there. I'll check the chat as often as I can. :)

If you schedule them nice and early I'll make sure they're on Twitter, to get as many people to watch as possible!

It would be nice if you streamed the whole event, people all over the world could watch - day or night :D

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, Have you considered a early variant rule allowing you to buy meeple who get trapped? - it's bound to happen however well you play, even if you have a great mix of tiles.

I'll know more once we get settled in. I might be able to stream while we are setting things up as well, might be fun. I'll also try to vlog as much as possible to upload them later. Never done it before, could be a good start to learn it.
Once we're set up, I might be able to give a full schedule so you'll know which hours we'll be streaming.

As for 24 hours a day, this could happen, but it all depends on the internet availability. This as much else we won't know until we're actually there. x_x
But I can see us having a live stream during the night shift as well. If nothing else, we'll at least film it. :)

I wouldn't worry about trapped meeples. I got many sets of Anniversal edition and at least 4 GQ expansions I believe along with at least 3-4 expansions of Count, King, Dragon, Tower, Inns'n'Cathedral, Abbey'n'Mayor (of each expansion) and 4 full set of the 6 mini expansions.
Of course, we can change the rule mid-way should we feel neccessary. :)

Will there be an official guiness book of records thing?

Not official, yet. Unfortunately there is a 12 weeks waiting period before they get in touch with you. Something I only found out about last week. We sent in our request too late to be guaranteed official recognition (hence we are not allowed to use the name Guinness.)
However, there has been many cases people get accepted afterwards provided one is able to present at least 2 witnesses and plenty of photos and videos. Which, on all mentioned accounts I am confident we will be able to procure.

Today I started packing the tiles into boxes. To save space, I used the display boxes of spin-offs and expansions to store tiles. This freed up more than half the space needed to carry with us. :)

I believe it may have been the first commercial energy drink (1920s); at least in the UK. It used to be targeted at dehydration relief, that was until they started putting caffeine in it.  They had an advertising campaign a few years ago which asked customers how it gave them the edge.  It's saved my life quite a few times when recovering from a 'hypo'. It was a fairly rubbish campaign, they obviously had no idea why diabetics were drinking it!

Edit: forgot to say - I'm on holiday today and tomorrow so hopefully I can support your game remotely!

Originally produced in Newcastle in 1927 as Glucozade - as a high glucose drink for the those suffering illness - renamed in 1929 as Lucozade and in my youth was a fizzy drink that was only available in chemists and came in a glass bottle wrapped in orange-yellow transparent cellophane.

Then in the 1980s they went all "street" and tried to shake off the association with illness and infirmity... lost the cellophane wrapper and the glass bottle and started generally messing around with it to make it into a "sports drink".

You learn something new every day. :)

I recently stopped drinking energy drinks as a cup of coffee is more efficient, and quite often tastier than some of the energy drinks out there. :D
But, on occation, I can drink one right before workout (which I haven't done any of this week, shame on me).

We just finished the rivers and 3 boxes each containing 240 tiiles. Images coming soon!

I won't update the thread as much, rather uploading on Twitter instead as it's easier to upload images there without editing. But some images will be posted here soon and a video or two on YouTube I think. Give me 30 mins or so. :)

We'll be taking a break and start again tomorrow, Friday or play a little more during the night.

The landscape looks very nice. There are enough tables for the mega game of Carcassonne.

At the moment they use 17 tables for the landscape.
They can place 12 x 12 =144 or 13 x 13 = 169 landscape tiles on one square table.

Dozens of meeple looked on in horror as the World Records Attempt at Carcassonne turned ugly today.  After clever tile placement and the use of a flyer, the blue player was able to steal a 400 tile city that the yellow player had spent 5 hours constructing.  Creator Klaus-Jürgen Wrede after being asked for a comment in the aftermath said, "I was really rooting for Paul until I found out he had no copies of Die Schule.  Here he owns 10,000 tiles, but no school.  Who does that?".

Guinness tweeted today, "While Paul and his friends did not capture the world's largest completed game of Carcassonne, he did capture the world's biggest angry table flip."

It does look great.   I also like watching the tables getting added.

It took me awhile to figure out what the green things were sticking out of the one player's head.

I would like to thank everyone for all your support here on the forum!

I'm so sorry the very last moments were not caught on camera. We were so tired and excited at the same time things got a bit out of hand. Especially the surprise and support by random people dropping in!
A professional photographer showed up for the photoshoot and there may be a slight chance that the national television sends a TV-team tomorrow (Sunday).

Although I should take a break, I need to start working on the score. x_x Hopefully I'll have the result, and some other statistics about the game tomorrow.

It has been an incredible journey with so much positive surprises. And of course, we did have few moments today where we started arguing, getting on each other nerves. :D

- how many tables were finally used?
- how many hours did you play?
- how many pieces of paper for score did you use ?

Sounds like a reasonable request. :)

We used a total of 48 tables. 20 tiles or so outside of this, but there is about as much "holes" on the edges so it evens out.
But, we did manages to fill in everything from the middle to 3 of the edges! (Much thanks to duplicate expansions and their crazy tile combinations.) :)

It's almost 1 am so I should go to bed. :)

But, here is at least the final scoring in game turn order:

Blue (Robert): 10696
Yellow (me): 11886
Black (my sister): 9402

Some more info:

With large scale games, co-op games can help a lot to fill in the gaps making a beautiful world not taking up too much space. Even though I gave away 50 points sometimes to opponents, I still won with over 1000 points marginal.
On an actual game with 72 tiles, this is of course much more difficult to pull off. I think most of my points came from small cities and thus having at least 1 free meeple continuously while my opponents were fixed on cloisters not grasping (at first) the idea of having the option to use them to close a road or an ongoing cloister.

Biggest city shared by all 3 players (if not already mentioned in an earlier post) was 855 points.

Biggest road (by me alone) was 35 points.

We managed to fill in every gap making a 108 x 92 rectangle with the remainder of the tiles in the corner, where the camera failed to catch during the live event (sorry about that!)

A total of 10007 tiles where used, including the rivers but not the WoF starter.

Actual game play was a little over 25 hours, starting on Thursday evening ending on the dot at Midnight on Saturday.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you guys for all the support and am most certain this forum community was the spark for this 10k idea. *hugs all around*

Going away from this, I made many new friends and even got support and participants, should I do a 100k game some day. ;)

Hi Paul,
are there any photos from the reporter?
Is there a newsletter published with the final few tiles?

I haven't seen any articles. National television failed to show up. I've mailed one of the photographer who said if I mail him he'd mail me images back, so we'll keep a lookout for those!
Meanwhile, I got ton of data and images to rifle through. Each day was a new folder during the convention so that's a big help right there.

Paul - could you make a photo from one of the score lists?
I like to see such list.

How many lists did you use (all of you)?
-------------------------
How many cloisters have been finished?

I printed out 7 copies of the score list for each and everyone of us. Me and Robert used up 6 of these and my sister 5.

S = Stad (City)
V = Väg (Road)
K = Kloster (Cloister)
(Swedish)

I haven't counted how many of each feature we completed yet, that will come later. But to sum up the total score didn't take long using Excel and the numeric keypad. I reckon 1 hour or so, including double checking all 17 pages.

I was curious if there was ever an unplayable tile.  I can't imagine there would ever be a time a CCCC tile couldn't find a home except really early on.

That's the most likely time a CCCC tile gets discarded though - right at the start!

Not a single tiles was unplaceable, though we did come close mid-game, can you believe that? :D
We had finished off so many cities and was trying to fill in gaps. I think closest we came was having 3 places in the area after 5000 tiles to place a base game CCCC tile.

Seems the images we took ourselves ended up poorly. :( Hopefully the photographers that where there were better. Let's hope they mail them soon.

There are no more holes in the landscape on the right side - but in the livestream there were some small holes there.

And really - you used the New Edition for the final tiles ?

What's happening here?

It looks like your sister is playing 3 turns in a row, then your friend played 2 tiles, before you got a go; were you playing with Builders?

Edit: Also how many cities and roads did you complete?

Definitely worth going for the King and/ or Robber Baron tile in this game if that expansion was included. Might take a few months to work out how much they're worth though!

Paul,
I am still not sure about the 25 hours game play.

That would mean that you played only 12 hours on Friday (25th March) and 12 hours on Saturday (26th March) and one hour on Thursday (24th March)...

Each box contains 600 tiles and we were assigned one box each.
Due to constant interruption by visitors we kept losing track of whose turn it is. This resulted quite often that one box gets finished early for we skipped turns. But in the end, everyone played a fair amount of turns as it resets when we take on 3 new boxes.

I still haven't done a count yet, but I could do that later on, to give you this info, maybe even this week.

King tile is shared? All three of us were awarded the biggest city. But Robert did get a solo city of some 160+ points alone I believe.

As for the road, I alone got the longest road awarding me 35 points. But 15 points is not exactly a huge deal in this game. :)
An interesting idea would be, having several King / Robber tiles is, when someone gets the longest road for example, gets the first. Then when someone beats the ol' record, gets the second. A bar needs to be set, though, for the first completion, say 7 points road?

I have the played schedule and will release later.

We played roughly 2 and a half hours Thursday evening, from 9:00 to 3 am on Friday (including breaks and dinner) and on Saturday we started a little after 9 (or was it 10?) and ended at Midnight sharp.

Only the person who completed the city receives King tile. So, it still matters :)
The same applies to the roads.

This goes to show when I last used this effect. Thanks for reminding me. :) (I think last we used it was the megaCarc game played 2014!)

Also, forgive me for not posting today's Journey yet, was sorting tiles since early morning and now it's after Midnight, just realising this. Time really flies.

This sequentially means I've not gone thru more photos yet. x_x

Perhaps it is better in the forums section for the game Carcassonne?
What are you thinking about my thoughts?

Honestly, bgg.com is a total mess. I am not sure where to put anything. This is one of the most confusing forum I am forced to deal with. There's too much of everything and very little in terms of search options etc.
I decided to leave that part alone and just be happy I managed to upload images.

The latest BGG News (https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/53479/links-wizards-coast-gets-sued-refugees-get-games-a) features Paul's world record game (including a photo and video). There are some comments about it in the comments section too that Paul might want to answer if he has time (e.g. about calculating farms, and about filling in holes in the landscape).
