Title: The Castle Expansion
Post by: Lord_Wishmaster on August 18, 2013, 09:03:52 AM
Some time ago there was talk of an expansion for The Castle, to be called Falcon I think. Obviously since then Z-Man have entered the fray. Having had a look around here, there seems no other posts about it. Anything happening?

I don't remember for certain, but I think the Falcon expansion was a Rio Grande initiative and therefore Z-Man Games can't publish it. I suspect it will never see the light of day, since RGG can't publish it anymore either.

Does anyone know anything more about the rules of The Falcon ?

This is what Boardgamegeek says:
"In Carcassonne: The Castle - Falcon, an expansion for the two-player game Carcassonne: The Castle, the Prince is growing and has taken up falconry, resulting in a large number of falcon nests in the castle. Also, religion has come to the castle, and there is now the possibility of building chapels in the castle.
All of this means more opportunities and challenges for the players to enjoy this great Carcassonne game.
According to Reiner Knizia, Rio Grande originally planned to release the game in 2009."

RGG is no more the licence partner from HiG - so no - this expansion wouldn't be publish.

I've done a bit more digging around myself. Think I found it on BGG... Knizer has now said that after a lot of trying, the release now seems fairly dead in the water and not likely to happen. He then goes on to say that he may consider making it available as a free download.... but nothing about when or where.  :( This was several months ago.

What about creating a fan-expansion for the castle? Any ideas for it?

Chapel: could be in some way similar to a cloister, but with only 4 or 6 tiles I think (Chapel in the corner of a tile and the three tiles at that corner)

With more tiles you need a bigger castle wall, I made some extra wall tiles to play with 4 players and the tiles of 2 games.

Back in 2008 on this very forum, on it's old site I did create a set of rules for a forum expansion. No one was that interested at the time:

See about halfway down the page....

Sounds very interesting.
Would be great if you finish this up as a pdf with tiles.
I would print it out.

That thread made it all the way to page 2, so I would say there was definitely some interest. I would also say that I'm more interested now that I actually own the game, though of course I've still not played it at all.

The idea is appealing to create our own version of the Falcon expansion, though I can't imagine how the falcon nests are supposed to work? Would they be tiles, or tokens that get placed on top of tiles? What is their purpose?

Has anyone ever asked Reiner Knizia what the rules, new components, etc, were for the planned expansion? Last I heard it was completed and just never released. Perhaps he'd be willing to leak the rules without the art, and we could create the tiles or components from there.

I think a chapel could be completed by "surrounding" it by the 4 adjacent tiles (no diagonals). There should be 3 or 4 chapels with 1 - 4 paths. I don't think it has to be like an Abbey because in The Castle all tiles can be build together only regarding the paths. I think it could be nice to have a small chapel on one tile, surrounded mostly with some grass and one or more paths. The roof from the chapel could be with corroded copper, so the players will easily recognize it.

Another mechanism still lacking in The Castle is somthing like the Cathedral in regular Carcassonne: Anything with which a tower is scored with 3 instead of 2 points per tile so you want to build a big tower. This could be a wooden tower: Every time you build a tower with more tiles than the biggest until then you get 3 points instead of 2 and the wooden tower is placed on this new built main-tower.
