Title: Brettspiel Advent Calendar 2015 - day by day
Post by: Paul on December 01, 2015, 12:45:03 PM
Hello!

This is a thread started tonight where I will be opening one hatch each day from December 1st to December 24th and give some feedback for each expansion. The rules will be posted on their (Frosted Games) official website each day for the expansion it correlate in German and English downloadable as .pdf. French was added on December 3rd as well.

Many of you probably know which the expansions are that comes with the box, but it could be fun to have a little more in depth of what these expansions actually do. Each post will represent one day on this thread. Feel free to comment and suggest! I most likely don't even own half of these games so I can't test them yet, and certainly not every day consecutive.

Update: Corrected the mistake of the German rules, they are NOT in Dutch as was pointed out further down this thread.  :(y)

Original size: http://sydby.com/carcassonne/screenshots/collection/20151201_BrettspielCalendarDiary/01__DSC_0100.JPG (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/screenshots/collection/20151201_BrettspielCalendarDiary/01__DSC_0100.JPG)

The Story
Santa needs wool for his new coat and the coats for his elves. Help out Santa Claus and he will help you in return!

Content
1 hexagonal new tile with Santa's home.
1 Santa Claus with stand (both cardboard)
11 tokens (roughly 1 cm squared)

Preparation
The game follows the same setup as normal play with a few modifications.

  • The new hexagonal tile (Santa's home) is placed where the number 2 is and the number 2 tile itself is placed on the tile marked with the number 12.
This merged location of 2 and 12 gives production to players adjacent this tile when rolled either a 2 or a 12.
  • Santa Claus cardboard figure is placed on Santa's home tile.

The Added Rules

There are 4 rules for this expansion. I'll paste exact quote to leave for interpretations.

Quote:
1. Moving Santa Claus
If it is your turn and – after rolling for production – you give Santa Claus 1 wool (i.e., you return the wool card to the supply), move him to any terrain hex not occupied by the robber (my ref: no punctuation after this sentence)

If you give Santa Claus 2 wool, you may even move him to the hex occupied by the robber and chase the robber away, in which case you place the robber on the desert.

Important: You are not allowed to move Santa Claus more than once during your turn.

End quote.

My own thoughts for this rule
The first paragraph suggest that you are forced to give Santa 1 wool and then move him, which is unusual. Could this be an error in translation? Well, continue reading, this might not be a mistake.

This extra phase during each turn may slow the game down a bit. I am fond of expansions that adds a little extra here and there, not permanently every turn so this is not something I'm used to.

Quote:
2. Receiving Gift Tokens (One or More)
If you move Santa Claus to a terrain hex, all players who have one or more settlements or cities adjacent to that hex receive 1 gift token.

If you move Santa Claus to the “Home of Santa Claus” special hex, all players who have one or more settlements or cities adjacent to that hex receive 2 gift tokens.

End quote.

Quote:
3. Placing Gift Tokens
If you have at least 2 gift tokens, immediately return 2 gift tokens to
the supply and take any 1 resource of your choice in exchange.

End quote.

My own thoughts for this rule
Here is where things gets confusing (for me at least). You can give 2 tokens away (see rule 1) and move the robber but rule 3 states that you have to give away 2 tokens immediately as soon as you have 2 tokens to trade in for any resource of that player's choice. This leads me to believe that the rules are meant to work in tangent somehow.

Quote:
4. Moving the Robber
You are neither allowed to move the robber to the hex occupied by Santa Claus nor to the “Home of Santa Claus” special hex.

End quote.

My own thoughts for this rule
Pretty much self-explanatory aside from the sentence error.  :@

Final thoughts:
As I mentioned earlier in this post, I'm not used to expansions that interfere every turn and although I have played (Settlers of) Catan I do not own the game myself.

Thanks for reading!
Paul

In the second slot there is an expansion for Fields of Arle.

Content
1 Peat-Fired Brickworks (the Torfbrandziegelei tile)
1 Peat Power Plant (the Torfkraftwerk tile)
1 Coach wagon

Setup
With an easy setup of mixing one tile with the rest, and adding the remainder two to their respective location adjacent other tiles of the same type, you are all set to play!
(This makes more sense if you already know how to play the game so don't worry about it.  C:-) )

The Rules
From what I understand reading the rules (for this expansion) it does not add much new content but another means of trading goods and using the coach to cut down trips needed. Doesn't sound that bad really.

The main game itself is quite interesting as the creator has roots to the real location where this game is taking place. Also, two of the tiles in this Advent expansion comes with a little story, sort of a true fact about the location (of East Frisia).

Another update discovered: Each day I receive an E-mail with some info and storyline about the expansion and the game in general. At least from what I could translate.  :) All in Dutch I'm afraid. It's not correlating to the actual expansion though, so that's confusing. December 1st mail was not about Catan, that's for sure!

I've read the Catan-rules in German, and you are not forced to give Santa the wool. It is still one of the expansions, I can easily let pass, like "Big Game" or "Hochzeitsturm", but thanks for the thread.

This is why I quoted the English rules word for word. For there it does not say anything about this being optional.

In the 3d slot there is an expansion for Colt Express adding one single card.

Content
1 Station card: The North Pole

The Rules (quoted from the .pdf file)
At the end of the game, each Bandit gives his highest purse to the imp.

Another famous game which I've yet had a pleasure to play. Maybe next year I get a chance to try out some of these games that comes with the calendar!

In the 4th slot there is an expansion for Las Vegas adding another slot machine.
Las Vegas is a dice game where players rolls a set of standard 1d6 (6-sided tiles numbered 1 to 6) and then taking turns placing them on a slot machine correlating to the number they rolled.
It's like a different form of Yatsy but instead of scoring points players wins money.

Content
1 Slot Machine cardboard

The Rules
The 7th slot machine is played almost like the other slot machines (1-6) with exceptions of players able to add any dice to it and then taking turns adding more dices with some restrictions (rules downloadable below).

(Apologies for the flash in the center of the image.)

This Saturday brings about the 5th expansion, Bean Market, which is for... Bohnanza!
A card game that has been around since 1997 and spawned over a dozen expansions and some revised editions. The (base) game seems great for those relaxed evenings. I also like how everything are made like cards, even the "tokens" such as beans and coins. This makes it good for travelling and you don't have to worry about tokens flying under the seat when in the backseat playing.  :D

The base game involves players (originally 3-5 but revised edition supports 2-7) to make coins to buy beans for planting and then harvesting.

Content
48 Quarter Bean Dollars (also known as QBDs in the rules)

The Rules
The rules for this expansion has some visual aids which is always good. This expansion adds a market row of five cards where players can use a QBD during their turn to buy one of these face up cards instead of buying a random card from the original pile. Players are able to trade in a regular coin for 4 QBDs as well.
Also mentioned in the rules are some of the expansions that this is playable with.

(Apologies for the crude image quality.)

Got a bit late this Sunday but here it finally is. The 6th hatch and it revealed an expansion for Loony Quest!
The base game is a drawing game much in the style of what appears to be like a video game. The basic principal is looking at an image, each one unique with layout and mission objective. You then get a transparent sheet and draw on it. Lastly, you take the transparent sheet and place it on top of the image to see how close you were to that mission objective.

This was a bit tougher to explain than I thought, but the game seems like great fun and I'm thinking of buying this soon!

Here is a link to a YouTube clip where you can see the game in action in a tutorial way. As this is based on the Doodle Quest game, this is included in the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck-UjXl2gpE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck-UjXl2gpE)

Content (calendar expansion)
1 alternate score board
1 alternate character token
4 bonus tokens

The Rules
The rules for the expansion (English) felt rather vague. Hopefully this makes more sense if you know the (base) game already. I'll just quote it which will make it easier than me trying to break down what it all means. And when I mean easier, I mean it for both you and I.  :@

Quote rule (English .pdf file):
Ski : A player who has a Ski tile may discard it during the scoring step and place his score token behind the score token of the nearest opponent on the score track. For example, if the player in front has 15 points, the player who plays the Ski places his score token on the 14 points.
End quote.

Today's expansion is for a game called Doctor Panic
Note! According to BoardGameGeek this game will be published in 2016. I checked the official site as well and could not find any info about this game. Also, Doctor Panic may not be the final name. This game will be using a free downloadable app (or soundtrack?) that will work as a timer for the game.

The (base) game info quoted from BoardGameGeek as it seems to describe the game perfectly:
Quote:
In Doctor Panic, you are a surgical team from the most prestigious hospital in the area. Your goal: Work together as a team to save a patient who just arrived on a stretcher before time runs out!
To accomplish this, you need to perform a series of medical treatments that have been prepared before the game.
One or more players serve as overseers — emergency room managers, as it were — and they give tasks to the other medical personnel on hand: find a combination of drugs in this batch of cards; figure out the dose you need to administer by consulting this chart; stitch up a wound by "stitching" on a game board with needle and thread; and so on.
If you complete all of the treatments before the final heart attack on the soundtrack, you are victorious! If not, you'll have to receive additional training...
End quote.

Here is a link to a YouTube clip where you can see the game in action in a tutorial way. As this is based on the Doodle Quest game, this is included in the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vujlt1oHZMY

Content (calendar expansion)
1 patient card: Klaus Santa

The Rules
There does not seem to be any additional rules. Santa Klaus has hurt his back and needs medical attention!   :(

... and then there are men that likes to dress up in them and women who likes men that do!
  ^-^

Today's expansion is for the game Rokoko (or Rococo depending on language released in)

Pressed for time, I'll quote BoardGameGeek as it seems to describe the game perfectly yet again:
Quote:
Rokoko is a Eurostyle board game with an interesting take on deck-building. Each turn you play one of your employee cards and let that employee perform a task: hire a new employee, buy resources, manufacture a coat or dress, or invest in the ball's decorations. But not every employee is up to every task, so you must choose and lead your employees wisely – especially since each employee grants a unique bonus and some of these bonuses generate prestige points.
End quote.

A review of the base game can be found here. It also has some nice pointers near the end of the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BP8Evl_RsDU

Content (calendar expansion)
4 new dresses (tokens)

The Rules
These new dresses are pretty much like those that come with the base game except they come into play slightly later into the game. Also, these cannot be sold, like Soulbound items in World of Warcraft. Hate that.  :P

Another thing mentioned in the rules .pdf file is that an expanson called Jewelry Box is coming next year in March (2016).

My own thoughts
I really like the art for this game and it always amazes me that the world of board games can provide solid ideas for themes other than Fantasy Adventure, tactical miniature and Zombie / Vampire related. I can certainly see myself obtaining this and as we have women in our gaming group I won't get bashed for it, at least not by everyone.  8)

That is awesome!

I never had a chance to meet the author of my childhood favourite board game of Dungeon Quest (the original Swedish version) but my sister did.

Tempted I am to move to Germany and learn the language, for it seems that this is the home of board games.  :D

Yes - in Germany you can find many authors and graphics artists...
I've met KJW, Bernd Brunnhofer, Michael Menzel and Luis and Stafan Malz (Rokoko), Dennis Lohausen and some more people...

Today's expansion is for the board game Zooloretto adding only one stinking animal! Literally.  ;D

A review even a child could understand of the base game can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV5Wgj_8ERs

Content (calendar expansion)
1 new animal tile (skunk)

The Rules
This is meant to be played with the base game only, but can be tweaked to adjust for expansions. The game follows normal play with the skunk tile placed in the middle of the table for all to see.
The first player who fills his or her housing area with six slots takes the skunk tile and then have a chance to do an action of discarding all animals of one type (now or later during any of his or her turns) from player's own barn which will allow any player to buy these discarded animals and those not bought removed from the game. This action is a one-time deal throughout the game.

2 coin tokens valued at 20 each

Requirements

The Rules

I enjoyed Orléans, although player interaction was limited.  I'm looking forward to giving 'The Invasion' Expansion a go.

You're most welcome! It's really amazing how these games can vary. I hope someday I get to try at least half of these games. One of the local stores had Zooloretto of all. One copy left. But 50 Euro was a bit steep. (Bought another game. Yep Carcassonne!  ;D

Is it a Caverna? Is it an Agricola? No... It's... Glasstrasse expansion!
English title is Glass Road and in German it's Die Glasstraße but can also be spelled with 2 s like above for those not familiar with the universal characters

To type these special characters, you have a variety of options and they do vary depending on software and hardware using. But the best method, that works on all computers is using the Alt-codes.
For the ß you can hold down left Alt and while keeping it down press on the numeric keypad (the calculator numbers on your right) 0 2 2 3 and then let go of the Alt key.
You won't notice anything while typing in the numbers, which can be weird at first, but it's as simple as that.

Content (calendar expansion)
4 bonus tiles:
1 Rebuild - Can be placed on one of the starter building to score 3 points
1 Stockade - By the end of the game, if your landscape board has all spaces occupied you score 4 points
1 Christmas Market - For each building on your landscape board, you score 1 point
Guesthouse - When built you can use a processing building on the building board (as many times as you want) until done. This can only be done once.

Requirements
The base game.  ;)

My own thoughts
At first I thought it was an expansion for Agricola. It follows the same theme, not just the game but the graphic style. And this is a good thing, the graphics that is. Makes you feel like you're part of one big landscape. Or in this case, Germany.  :) Most of these games seems to follow the theme of being played in this country and being based on some history. That's kinda deep ya know.  :(y)
I do not own Glass Road but I do have Agricola and hope to try that some day.

It's no Targarian but it does have a desert theme. An expansion for Targi!
This Saturday I'm going to be busy so this has been edited and posted around 3 am.  :o

Content (calendar expansion)
8 tokens (4 for each player):
• 2 Joker goods tokens
• 2 Targi tokens (1 each in blue and white)
• 2 Tribe marker tokens (1 each in blue and white)
• 2 Waiver tokens

Requirements
• According to BoardGameGeek there are no expansions for this game other than this calendar one so if owning the base game your collection is easy to complete.
• This game is intended for 2 players only.

The Rules (expansion)
Each player takes 4 tokens, one of each and then chooses (secretly) three of them to keep and discard the fourth. After they have discarded the token they reveal which ones they kept. Then, during game play, a player may use a token (one time only for each token) for various effects.
The joker can be traded in for a merchandise of his or her own choosing (dates, salt or pepper).
The extra Targi and Tribe tokens (blue and white) can be used as extra of each counterpart after the main 3 from each player has been played for extra bonus effect.
The last token is a waiver token that let's the player pass on benefits from a Tribe card to be rewarded 2 extra victory points during end of game scoring.

My own thoughts
The rules (for the base game) seems just crazy to try explain without any visual aid so for these I would refer to the video below!
The game sounds like a fun thing to play when a friend comes over for a cup of coffee to just chill and talk. It also doesn't seem to take up much space but still, I would've liked the cards to be smaller to be adjusted for the road, playable in the back seat or on the train.

Today's expansion is for The Abyss!

Content (calendar expansion)
• 5 Monster key tokens

Requirements
• The base game, which has five different box covers but from what I've read, all of them have the same game content, rules etc.

The Rules (expansion)
Preparations and play for this expansions is quite easy. Just shuffle them into the monster pile and whenever one of these (expansion tiles) are drawn the player keeps it and can later use it as a key to take control of locations.

My own thoughts
The game components and idea is not that grand and that's not a bad. It seems to have a solid foundation for a good play. Unfortunately, us Swedes have this priced at 50-60 Euro (without shipping for domestic orders) which is too high of a price for a game that has a play time of 30-60 mins and only allows a maximum of 4 players. Then there is the consideration of actually playing it more than once a month which can be tough having so many other games out there!

So what's behind today's hatch? Something that will stir things up... An expansion for VivaJava!
Nothing like having the morning coffee to write today's calendar expansion. Am I right or am I right?  ;D

Content (calendar expansion)
• 4 Research tokens

Requirements
• The base game
• 1-4 players (yes, can be played solo!)

The Rules (expansion)
These research tokens are mixed in with the other tokens as far as I can tell with 3 of the tokens able to force another player to, for example, discard a Blend (this: in-game terminology)
If you look at the image above, you'll also notice something rude (and hilarious if you ask me!) in one of the token names.

My own thoughts
This is, to me, yet another odd game I probably won't get a chance to own. But if I do find a really cheap sale on this I might consider it.
The game mechanics is quite interesting for it allows simultaneously game play for several (all?) players to minimize the waiting during others turn.
There is also co-operation interactive to share some of the scoring opportunities.

And, as a bonus, it has some Carcassonne similarities such as a cloth bag and coasters (ideas).  :yellow-meeple:

Game versions and box arts
There are several VivaJava games. This expansion is for the dice game with round board tokens. Also, the box graphics differ depending on the year / country it was released (in).

I think you speak of "Muckefuck", it is a german expression for grain coffee / malt coffee / barley coffee, a coffee substitute. There's no sexual meaning though.

Today's hatch I thought was going to be one single card but...
... it was actually four and it's for a game called Wizard!

Content (calendar expansion)
• 4 Wizards in festive garbs cards

Requirements
• The base game
• 3-6 players

The Rules (expansion)
There are no added rules for this expansion. Simply replace the four wizards in the base game with the expansion ones for little festive play during the Season.  :yellow-meeple:
There is however a Christmas variant where you use all eight wizards where the powers from them shifts depending on the season, if I read the rules correctly!

The Rules (base game)
I haven't found them (did not search much either  :@ ) but as far as I can tell, it's just a variant play using a standard deck card.

My own thoughts
As mentioned, the base game can be played using a standard card deck provided you have 8 jokers. This festive expansion adds nothing new to the game and because of a unique backside limited to certain versions of the game (European release?) I feel this to be a pointless, cheezy and lazy expansion. You could use deck sleeves that covers the back side of the deck cards though, not that it would improve what I feel about today's expansion.

There are no good Wizard videos out there in English

Finally a game that I actually own! Splendid! I mean.. Splendor!  :-*

Content (calendar expansion)
• 1 Noble tile

Requirements
• The base game
• 2-4 players

The Rules (expansion)
There are no added rules for this expansion. Just shuffle this noble tile in with the rest and draw (depending on amount of players) as usual.

A video for the base game can be viewed here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF-I44_EF7g

My own thoughts
This is a very simple and fun game, perfect for those chill days where you can have conversations with one another and not worry about going all in with your mind to focus. As the game also is short you get to play it several times in one day and still enjoy it.
The game area is not that big, and it's quite possible to play this on the road, a huge bonus in my book. As mentioned in the video, it's only for 2-4 players which is minor bummer, but can be solved by owning 2 copies and have 2 groups play side by side, so as to still have a social gathering.

I got to try this game for the first time at a convention this year and immediately, the same day, went to the first store I could find to buy it!

Today's hatch got opened with the arrival of its base game into my possession. Sweet coincidence, not?   :@

Content (calendar expansion)
• 1 Big Market tile
• 1 Golden Temple tile

Requirements
• The base game
• 2-4 players

The Rules (expansion)
This expansion differs a bit from what we've encountered so far with the previous ones. The expansion can be used partially, i.e. only one tile (the Big Market and or the Golden Temple).

The Big Market replaces a tile already in the base game (remove it from the game before it starts) and adds the following rule (quoted):
ACTION
For each of your activated workers on the adjacent edge of the tile, you may sell 1 cacao fruit from your storage at the price of 5 gold on the market. You put the cacao fruit back in the supply and then take 5 gold from the bank.

The Golden Temple replaces a temple from the base game (remove it from the game before it starts).
This temple has no effect during game play. It is used at the end of the game and awards gold for player(s) adjacent this temple, up to 8 gold for the person with the most workers on it.

A video for the base game can be viewed here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9H1Z7Yv6gI

My own thoughts
I haven't had a chance to play this game but it feels like a variant of Carcassonne and that always intrigues me and would be fun to try something new. As my local store offered me a good deal, I took it and the base game arrived today of all days when opening the hatch with it's expansion!

As far as I can tell, there is a Volcano epansion for this game as well, but haven't had searched for it yet. It's a small one, figure I might as well complete this collection.

I unboxed it earlier this evening. Couldn't wait. The content is so bizarre (and wonderful!) and they do match rather decent with Carcassonne. The thing to get used to is there are only 4 meeples in the game, one for each player, not counting the wooden beans.  :@

Note: I realize this is the backside depicted. Sorry about that!

Today we're going East, away from Europe, the deep sea and the rain forest. It's time for some Asian influence with ZhangGuo!

Content (calendar expansion)
• 3 Task tiles
• 1 Wall tile

Requirements
• The base game
• 2-4 players

The Rules (expansion)
There are some minor preparations replacing one Wall tile from the base game with the new one and then adding the 3 Task tiles to the other ones with the same backside.

The Task tiles adds 3 new ways to have a task completed.

The Wall tile let's a player score Victory Points in different ways, depending on side of the tile.

A video for the base game can be viewed here:

My own thoughts
I had to watch the video twice and although it still felt like a complicated game, I believe this would be an interesting tryout nonetheless. As always, once you play a game several times you'll get the hang of it! It certainly adds many new mechanics that I am not used to, which makes this a game I hope to play some day. A list which is growing day by day.  ;D

Today we have a card expansion for a dice game. Pretty neat.  ???

Content (calendar expansion)
• 1 Hawkeye card (Heroes Disassembled)

Requirements
• Any Dice Masters (Marvel, DC, Dungeons'n'Dragons etc)
• 2 players

The Rules (expansion)
This card was used as a promo for an organized play event. It does not, however, come with the dice required to play it. For those you need to buy booster packs (Avengers vs. X-Men only).

Quote from the translation of the card in English:
Once per turn, during your Main Step, you may knock out a Hawkeye die you control. If you do, you may deal damage equal to his attack divided any way you choose to your opponent’s characters.

A video for the base game can be viewed here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9puJ8Ng4GlA

My own thoughts
My cousin and I did talk about a collectible game to play and he is a huge Marvel fan so this might be it. I especially like that you are not forced to collect the rarer cards to win (according to the video review above).
Minor drawback to this expansion though, is the lack of content. Not only didn't we get the dice needed to instant play this, but only one card? That's so cheap. They could've at least have added 4 cards in my opinion.

Keywords are castles, cloisters, tiles and France...
... Nope, not Carcassonne. It's The Castles of Burgundy!
   :D

Content (calendar expansion)
• 5 Cloister hexagon tiles

Requirements
• The Castles of Burgundy
• 2-4 players

The Rules (expansion)
These cloister tiles are used to replace a black hexagon tile each round. I.e. beginning of each round place one of these cloisters instead of drawing a hexagon tile from the black backside tile heap.
These cloister tiles follow the same rules (bought with 2 coins) and can be place anywhere on the player's board following standard rules. They do not do anything other than helps to complete a region and give more points for completing it.
Each cloister counts as an extra region (up to a maximum of 8 in region size).
Example 1: A 4 hexagon sized region with 1 expansion cloister counts as a 5 region sized area when completed and gives points accordingly.
Example 2: A 4 hexagon sized region with 2 expansion cloisters counts as a 6 region sized area and gives points accordingly.

A video for the base game can be viewed here:

There are a few other reviews out there for this game, but this one above was the best I could.

My own thoughts
Many of the reviews seems to hint that this game is easier than it looks. From what I've seen so far I do believe that at least my group of easy players would be able to learn it.
As with many board games, the usual drawback is the few amount of players this game is intended "four", but we've done good teaming up in 2 player teams in the past.

This is yet another game I hope to get some day to break free of the regular Carcassonne and Catan evenings my group usually have.  :(y)

Another interesting fact is that this game has had many expansions which usually is proof of a successful game. However, these expansions are all small adding mostly a new setup board for players. This is both good and bad. Too much new content can scare non-veteran players off and I like the idea of not adding too much new content and rules, just new strategies.
Maybe there will be a random tile board setup like earlier Catan versions to really spice up the game!

Holy Cow! Yep, back to yet another farming game with today's expansion.  :P

Content (calendar expansion)
• 8 sacks of cattle food

Requirements
• El Gaucho
• 2-4 players

The Rules (expansion)
A player can, during his turn, use one of the two dice he picks up to "buy" a sack of cattle food. Later, during a scoring session, that player can use 1 up to 2 sacks he or she owns to increase the sell value by 1.
Example: Selling a cattle stock valued at 5, 7 and 11 (3 tiles), all of them become valued 11. Using a sack would then increase this value to 12 and thus get 36 points for these 3 tiles when selling them.

My own thoughts
Albeit this game does not seem bad at all, I don't think I will buy this one. It's yet another 2-4 player game which will be tough to play in my large gaming group. It's one of those weekend games where you just want to relax a bit, so that's nice.

I haven't had a chance to play this game but it feels like a variant of Carcassonne and that always intrigues me and would be fun to try something new. As my local store offered me a good deal, I took it and the base game arrived today of all days when opening the hatch with it's expansion!
It is not at all a variant of Carcassonne (this I would call Cornwall (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/181328/cornwall)), other than it is a tile laying game with square tiles, there is not much in common, mechanism wise. But I had a chance to play a game at a game fair in Vienna some weeks ago (kettlefish recommended me to do so before), and it was very enjoyable. I think, you will probably like the game, too.

I don't think I've played any games involving the placement of square tiles that weren't either Carcassonne or Carc spin-offs so I think I'd feel the same way as Paul too (excepting of course that Carcassonne also includes triangular tiles and rectangular tiles now too)! :D

So close to the finale (24th) we are rewarded with a small but exciting expansion for Isle of Skye!   :)
Full title of the base game in English is Isle of Skye - From Chieftan to King

Content (calendar expansion)
• 2 new Scoring tiles

Requirements
• Isle of Skye base game
• 2-5 players

The Rules (expansion)
These two new scoring tiles adds new ways to score in the game.

• One offers victory points for each horizontal tile row of at least 3 contiguous tiles
• The second scoring tile gives victory points from one of your scrolls (doubled if in a completed area)

This game also comes with a heed of warning: It may unbalance the game greatly using these.

A video for the base game can be viewed here:

My own thoughts
Those of you that know me by now, knows I'm a sucker for tiles. I love the art and it's similarity to Carcassonne. Laying down tiles is, apart from the art, probably the only thing that is similar to it. With mountains and sea edges one may think it will be hard to match areas, but you don't actually have to match the roads, which will make it easier.

I am looking forward to try this game some day. Ordered it today from a store that had 1 copy left at a decent price.  :)

Everytime I see this game, I think this mechanic would make the 'Bazaar' tiles work a little bit better.

A player who draws a Bazaar: Draws 3 tiles.  Bins 1 and marks their price in points for the others.  Then other players bid on tiles.

Could be nice to have all players draw 3 tiles and mark their prices too.

Rahdo does a great run-through for this game here:

Thank you for the link, Decar.

I just finished watching it and now I want to play this game so badly! Unfortunately it may not arrive until next Monday due to holiday and weekend.

Thanks for the videos guys. This is the first time I've taken a look at Isle of Skye and I think it looks fabulous! As I begin to expand my horizons beyond Carcassonne I'm starting to look at what other games I might like. I'm quite particular about certain things and I can usually tell straight away whether I will like something or not [e.g. I knew I would love Carcassonne before I had ever played it based on one look at the (old) artwork]. Tile-laying games obviously agree with me because Cacao and Isle of Skye are the two that have really jumped out at me from this thread.

Our group has really enjoyed this game.  We've played it a couple of times now and with different rules sets each time, it can be a completely different game.  Lots of replayability.

Will today's hatch be cream of the crop? It's a huge hatch to circle in on that's for sure!    :-*

Content (calendar expansion)
• 6 Crop Circles tiles

Requirements
• Carcassonne Winter Edition (any version)
• 2-5 players

The Rules (expansion)
The 6 tiles are shuffled or thrown into the bag along with the other tiles that will be drawn during the game.

When one of these tiles are placed it follows a normal turn. Player may place a follower and scoring is done.

When the turn is over the player who drew the crop tile may must choose one of the following effects below (A or B) and then, starting from the player on his or her left:
• A: Each player may place a follower on a tile where he or she already has a follower on.

• B: Each player removes a follower from a tile and puts it back to his or her supply.
Note it does say "his or her supply" in the same sentence so you can only remove your own follower from a tile.

The crop sign determines which type of follower to be added or remove:
ᴪ (pitchfork) = Farmers on a field
♂ (club) = Thieves on the road
▼ (shield) = Knights in a city

A guide for special characters like the pitchfork etc will be posted soon on this forum.

My own thoughts
This wouldn't be what I had in mind if I were to make an expansion for the Winter Edition, but I will surely not complain! Six tiles is nice on it's own which supersedes many of the expansions so far revealed!
Could be, they wanted to add a frozen river but 12 tiles would be too much. 6 river tiles wouldn't be so bad either, though.  :)

Finally! I've been waiting for the Carcassonne Winter tiles rule release since november :P

A minor note however: The player must choose either A or B, not may. There is a big difference and the rules actually has a specific note about that. Great thread btw!

The final grid in the calendar is one with power!    >:D

Content (calendar expansion)
• 6 Connection tiles for the German board

Requirements
• Power Grid (any version with the German grid)
• 2-6 players

The Rules (expansion)
Preparation for the game is adding certain expansion tiles depending on the amount of players (2-6).

Adding 2 new phases (paying taxes and then building a transmission line or in rare circumstances 2 lines).

This is really a fun expansion adding some logical twist to the game, where players pay taxes to force connections to be build during the game to allow free cost when passing thru that connection to build later on in the game.
Each city is connected to another city and to build there you have to pass thru a transmission line (or several) that connects both cities.
For each transmission line there is a cost that needs to be paid. With these expansion tiles replacing certain transmissions later in the game, it will allow for these connections to be made at no cost at all (except for those connections that still have a cost and the cost to build on the city itself).

A small review for the game

My own thoughts
I've heard so much about this game and have always been intrigued about it, despite the name that puts me off buying it. Although I myself still am not convinced, just not my type of a game, I can see this being added to my collection in the future due to the somewhat complexity that it brings. And if this really is a thinking game with math and planning involved, I know some of the members in my gaming group would be very interested in this game!

Indeed!  A sterling effort, keeping us posted, finding videos and sharing your thoughts.

When I first saw this calendar I thought it was a rubbish idea.  But what a great way to explore new games and share some promos with your friends  :(y)    Plus I've now got a great box for future Advents.

A mini-carcassonne expansion for each day me thinks.  I better start work for 2016.  11 months to go!
