I regular play Carcassonne the basic game and the first and second expansion.
And then here and there the tower or the princess and the dragon...

Sometimes I put some of the minis into the game randomly the other big expansions...

Sometimes I also use the fan-expansions - then it will be more than 200 tiles...

For "play" testing: basic game and the expansion for the test.
example: basic game and the Easter-Festival

I'll play with as many expansions as I can get away with including. For me this requires playing several games with the same group of people. I introduce people to one expansion at a time so that they are not overwhelmed.

Played my first "big" game of Carcassone tonight and it made me wonder "what defines a Megacarcassone game?" Is it the number of expansions or is it the number of tiles? The game I played today was made up of the Base game, tiles from. Inns and Cathedrals, except the Cathedral tiles, all tiles from traders and builders( but only used Trader Mechinism) Wheel of Fortune and Fliers. I absolutely loved it, and didn't take as long as I was expecting!

In my opinion a mega game should have over maybe 250 tiles, less than that it is a big game. My question though it's what's the name when we are talking about 1000 tiles?  Super mega?
Just lay the damn tile!

Perhaps:

1000 tiles, is a KiloCarcassone
1000000 tiles is a MegaCarcassonne

The combination of amount of different expansions , tiles and time!

It is indeed maybe a good idea to create a formula ?
Simply

Time in minutes x amount of tiles x number of expansions = score

And then difine a score table ?

0-1000 normal
Etc

Haha kilocarc, megacarc, giga, terra awesome

(Time + tiles) x (0.5 x number of expansions) = score

100 - 500 points = normal game
501 - 5000 points = big game
5001 + points = mega carc!

normal time = 30 mins
base set = 72
expansions (large) = 0
expansions (small x0.5) = 0

102 points = normal carc

time = 300 mins
tiles = 437
exp L = 9
exp S = 27

13266 = Mega carc

how about that?

Hang on, did I miss something? If you're not playing with any expansions you'll always score zero regardless of time and tiles.

and when I play my Dad a normal game always takes twice as long, so I'm not sure time is a good/fair metric.

EDIT: Ah! I see it was meant to be a plus not a multiply  O:-)

I think this thread goes some way towards proving that "Mega Carcassonne" is yet to be strictly defined. According to the CAR, I thought it was supposed to be Carcassonne + at least one set of every expansion but I can't imagine that this happens very much in many homes.

For me, Mega Carcassonne would probably be the basic game plus three or four of the major expansions, and probably a couple of the minor ones thrown in for good measure. I guess this would come to around 200 tiles. However, for many people here, 200 tiles is barely even their basic game so this certainly wouldn't be considered Mega by everyone's standards.

I think Rosco is on the right track with developing a formula. "Mega" used to mean playing with all the expansions, but it's not easy to own all of them anymore. I think if you have five or more of the large expansions, that would qualify.

This is of course a matter of opinion, but for me a mega-game is with at least all the big expansion (1-9) and most of the small. ;)

In contrast, I consider a mega-game any game that will take more time than I probably actually want to play…usually around an hour and a half. In other words, any combination of four large expansions or more will probably qualify as a mega-game. A game of MegaCarc (proper noun), on the other hand, is emptying all my tiles into a garbage bag and playing until the last tile is played (which I have done precisely twice six and eight years ago).

This raises an interesting question. And I think people use the term differently depending on their level of exposure and experience to the game. I remember when I was first learning of expansions I considered MegaCarc to be the base game + 3 large expansions. I owned and had played with Inns & Cathedrals previously but received both Princess & Dragon and Abby & Mayor for Christmas. It was (at the time) the most I had ever played with together and all that I owned. It was MEGA to me at the time - figuring out rules, learning how the expansions interacted with each other, etc.

All that to say, another question in figuring out this definition - what constitutes playing with an expansion. For example, I almost always play with the large follower, but not necessarily with inn tiles. I almost always play with the builder, but not necessarily the trade tiles. We usually play with the abbey tile, but maybe not the mayor or mayor tiles. For us, we choose meeples over tiles more often than not, but what about people who play the other way around? Love the princess but hate the dragon? Does that mean that you didn't play with the expansion if you did not use all of the elements?

Just something else to take into consideration :)

This is an old topic, but I'll add my 2 cents.  I consider MegaCarc to be a rather ambiguous term, however, I will freely toss around the term when playing with several expansions.  If I can get away with it, I will always add I&C, T&B, A&M,  the Wheel and Wheel tiles (usually no the redundant base tiles from the Wheel base game), and several mini-expansions like Ferries, Goldmines, The School, both Rivers, and Siege.  The GQ11, the King & Robber, and one or two printed tiles are permanently mixed in with my base game set.  For fanspansions, I nearly always include The King's Gate, and the Coliseum and Ranch tiles from the SoLazy expansion.   So, I guess that's somewhere in the neighborhood of my 200-400 tile vote.  As for followers, I always include the big guy, the pig, the builder, the phantom, and the Missionary.  For bigger games I like to add the cart, the mayor, and the barn.

I think I have played with every expansion I own on three to four occasions.  However, the last game was at least 4 years ago, so I've gotten several new expansions since them.
Flee the fleas.
