I consider my interest in board games to be an extension of my life interests in things like history/travel/culture.
I like to ask the question: what do you do in this game? If the answer is something like: you build a medieval landscape and claim features on it (Carcassonne), that sounds like a game I'd like to play.
That's still the first thing I like to know about a game before I even get into how it plays. Is that reasonable?

I think that makes perfect sense!  It's often rewarding being constructive in game.

I didn't actually mean to list all constructive things in my three examples, but maybe you are onto something here and perhaps that is a large part of why I like certain games, now that I think about it. I guess I meant that I like games where the theme sounds 'pleasant' and the artwork reflects that. I don't mind if the mechanics of the game are cutthroat.

I usually rate mechanics ahead of theme; which is why I love abstract games so much.

I start with theme. The mechanics are still what makes a game sink or swim in the end, but if I'm put off by the theme, then I won't even try it. Your whaler example is a good one.

For some reason, I think building a pyramid might take a lot more than 3-stone and 2-paper.

Right. As I stated somewhere in these forums a year or so ago, games like that used to put me off because the resources used and required seemed so contrived. But it seemed like it would be a shame to miss out on 7 Wonders (Duel) because of that, so I moved past it.

Good luck with your Kickstarter :)

Happy 2600th post jungleboy!  Wow!

I meant constructive in the figurative sense; rather than just building stuff.  Building a civilization or performing some sort of necessary task (like in Onirim) can be rewarding, and the end result provides satisfaction.

You've inspired me to kickstart my cut-throat game of Stamp-Collecting.  Primarily a set collection game, but Players must post letters and packets to one another in the hope of collecting rarities for their pension pot.  It's not that straight forward though, it's possible to forget to frank your mail and thus receiving players must pay the dues (and extortionate administration charges).  Will you get caught by the postmaster general?  Will you risk losing your delivery?  Will you collect the invaluable thrupenny-violet? Will you be: The Stamp Collector?

Will the Portuguese post failure to deliver, causing Chooselife to rush to his nation's defence and blame the innocent would-be recipient instead?  :))

For those who might not have seen it yet, Meeplesource is holding another Kickstarter campaign.  They are already funded.  They are offering new Carcassonne sets with this one.  Full sets of meeples, up to and including the Ringmaster, in new colors we haven't seen before.  They also have custom neutral figures like the Dragon and Fairy.

Check it out HERE if you're interested.

Hmm.. I might be tempted, if they included a phantom in with the set.

We've been discussing it 3 times already - welcome to the party!

I requested Phantom meeple, prior to it starting, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.  Good luck  :(y)

I guess I expected it to have it's own thread which is why I didn't see it.  Sorry for the fake news.

Probably would have made sense tbh, but chooselife already posted it here with all the best kickstarter (and ikea) news, then i shifted carcgin's post yesterday and I already mentioned it on the 'pimping your wood' poll.

So what are people backing?  4 ot 10 colours?

One for you here jungleboy:

Morels is a fungi set collection game. I was just recommended it because it's a bit like Jaipur but a little deeper.  I just watch Rhado's run through from 2012, it was far easier to watch than his latest videos:

The kickstarter is for the latest expansion. But the original is available as an add on:

I already own it. :)

I have the reprinted version called Fungi. It's quite a nice game but there's a lot of moving around of cards. I haven't played it for a while but maybe I should give it another go.

Unfortunately fungi isnt compatible with the expansion.  But there's one set of handmade wooden sticks and frying pans still available!

I've got the original version - on the wall of shame  :(  and had my eye on the expansion but the cost in US bucks plus shipping kills the Kickstarter for me. I will order the expansion from my OLGS when its released and I'm certain the price will be the same and likely better, (with volume and consolidated shipping). I had previously ordered the original sticks and Pans from Brett, super nice guy and he will still get the sale!

Now, just have to get the base game on the table!
Franks

Wanna play Carc? Can we add just one more expansion?
