Title: Gentcant Solo Contest: 2nd August - 5th August 2018
Post by: Decar on July 27, 2018, 02:48:10 AM
It's that time of the year again!

For those of you who don't know:  GenCon is the largest tabletop-game convention in North America by both attendance and number of events.

However, lots of people [like me] can't attend this large convention.   Since 2015 Carcassonne Central has taken part in the large 'unconvention' which used social media to unite those not attending - GenCant
More details here: http://www.gencant.com/history/

This year is going to be a little different from previous years - so I wanted to give you a head start and the possibility of subscribing to this thread, so you can get updates ASAP!

Those who recall in 2015 we attempted to break the high-score using a Carcassonne base-game.
In 2016 I shared a solo-variant of Carcassonne called:  Carcassonne: Solomo (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=317)
In 2017 - I shared
The Abbot's Walk (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=333)

This year I will be sharing The Knave of Carcassonne - another very different solo variant [which also contains rules for a 2-players].

I'll be uploading the rules on Wednesday evening to give everyone the most chance to learn and play this new variant over the weekend.

Just like last year there will be a small contest and prize draw.

Those who want to enter can post on this thread or on Twitter and receive one entry for the following:
  • A post containing The Knave of Carcassonne
  • A post containing Carcassonne: Solomo
  • A post containing Carcassonne: The Abbot's Walk

You will also get an additional entry for posting all 3 variants.
To post on Twitter you must include: #GenCant2018 #Carcsolocon @Carcassonne in your tweet.

In addition: The highest scoring individual of The Knave of Carcassonne will win a prize.

Keep your eyes peeled for The Knave of Carcassonne!

It's time to share the details!

The Knave of Carcassonne

The Abridged Rules

The first potion of the game has a Push-Your-Luck element:

Take the 72-base game Carcassonne Tiles and split them into 12 sets of 6 tiles.
For each set lay out the 6 tiles face down.
The first tile is always the starting-tile.
Flip the first tile of the set and keep a running total of the number of City-edges and pennants.
You may hold or continue.
If you continue, flip the next tile and add the number of city-edges to your total.
If the total is ever more than 5, you are bust. Discard all 6 tiles.
If you decide to Hold, discard the face-down tiles and take the face-up tiles to build a play deck.
Continue with the next set of 6 tiles.

Once you've completed, you will take one meeple (black, the Knave) + an additional meeple of another colour (red) for every 12-tiles in your discard pile.

You then play regular Carcassonne, except when you wish to place a follower, you must select one at random. You can randomize the chosen meeple by shaking and dropping, using a die or dropping them through a dice tower, or using a bag.

If you score a Road,City,Cloister with the Knave it scores double the regular points.  The Knave doesn't score double farming points.

High scores are in the order of 150.

Detailed Rules

You can download the complete set of rules from the Downloads Section:

The Knave of Carcassonne (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=340)

Make sure you read my previous post for details on how to win the spot-prizes!

Contest Ends at Midnight on Sunday

Note: Thanks to TheSteveAllen for play testing and taking screenshots.

First off-awesome work again Decar.

Second, are discarded tiles (after hold/bust) revealed? Or do tiles just stay in their final state, be that face up or down?

Seems like a significant bit of free/hidden info in either case so worth clarifying.

Thanks CobyHectic!

Good point!

The discarded tiles remain face down, until the end of the "Pressing Your Luck" phase.

Once you've finished, you've seen all the tiles in your play-pile, so implicitly know what you've lost before continuing.

Hi Decar,
Thanks for organizing the contest. Great idea! (Again.)  :(y)
I have a question: what about the starting tile? I mean it has different back side.

Happy to see you taking thw challenge on again Leven!

Make sure you download the pdf for a full explaination:

Setup 2nd paragraph:

The  setup  of  the  game  is  played  over  12  hands  of  6  tiles.    The  first  tile  drawn the game must always  be  the starting-tile.

Example shows this also!

I will try again tonight.  I reckon more tiles with less meeples is best.  Highest chance of getting the double score and lots of features available

That's amazing Leven, however: I count 30 discarded tiles from the push you luck phase.  But I see 3 regular meeple plus your knave in the final photograph.  You recruit one knave for every 12 discarded tiles!

There were 36 discarded tiles. You can see two rows where the tiles are shifted to the right: these are the rows where the number of city edges plus the number of pennants exceeded the limit of 5. So I was playing with 36 tiles.

Excellent!

I didnt notice the pennants on those rows. Thanks for confirming!

That's a fantastic result! I suspect Rosoco will be late to bed tonigt :D

Quick go of Solomo but only managed 144. Gambled with a couple of tiles left to complete it and gain bonus 15 points, but it didn't happen and meant joining the farms cost me so I was 12 points worse off in the end. Due to me forgetting that we're in BST, the contest should be ending at 1pm not noon UK time.

but Howland island is uninhabited.  So the folks in American Samoa still have 1 hour until midnight.

Apologies, to the ~300 non-permanent people living in GMT-12.
