Title: Do You Feel The New & Old Carcassonne Editions Are Compatible?
Post by: ARabidMeerkat on June 23, 2015, 02:20:38 PM
Even though you may be able to play with them both and practically they can work together, the point I am trying to find out here is that whether or not you feel they look and play well together (especially with the new game designs).

Vote away (within 14 days time of course)!

I chose the bottommost option of not caring and just loving.  :)

I have played a double-base game with both versions of the artwork (photos I took of the game featured on Z-Man Games' FAQ about the new version) and it was perfectly playable. I didn't mind that there was a clash between the different versions, even though it was obvious. We didn't use the Abbots though, I'm still not convinced by them. And we didn't use any other expansions either.

Same.  :(y)

It may seem silly, but I just can't enjoy the game when some of the tiles are a completely different artwork.  It bugs me that it doesn't look right. . .

Yeah, I'm in the same boat with the artstyle clash.  As a video gamer, I don't like when there's one artstyle but then they throw in another out of left field

My views on the mixing of artwork are pretty well known around here - so I voted never.

Nine months or so after Carc 2.0, we still don't really know where it's going. If it ends up as a one-time stand-alone game, then I won't be bothered by it. I just won't buy it, and won't ever think about it. I'll be more annoyed by Darmstadt to be honest, because it's somehow made its way into the Carc 1.0 mainstream when (in my opinion) it has no business there.

If Carc 2.0 is the future, then I'll have to decide if I buy the base game and new expansions. But even if I do (and I'm not sure I would, because I just don't like the artwork anyway), I still wouldn't mix old and new. As I've said before, the different shadings for fields in some expansions and the different shading of the Cathars already bugs me, so I definitely couldn't handle mixing old and new artwork.

At the moment I don't feel I would, but I still haven't actually seen 2.0 tiles in person so my opinion could change.

My current solution would be similar to jungleboys by buying a new base set and only using any new expansions with that base set and then just consider all previous expansions part of the original set as it were. If we do get a 2.0 art only expansion I may just buy it and give mixing a go…if I don't like it then a new base set will follow.

Z-man Games doesn't seem to thinkk there is a clash. Maybe it's in the eye of the beholder(s).  :@

And congratulations Dan.  :)

Well, my eye is telling me that it looks terrible.

Also, Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder. The rest of the party is in the stomach of the Beholder...

For any interested parties, there are some more detailed photos on this thread (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=1217).

I've already stated my opinion on this, but for what it's worth, I wouldn't say the result of mixing the tiles is especially beautiful either. It's certainly interesting though, and I'd say the two sets are compatible too (although I suppose this depends on your definition of "compatible"). They're playable at least anyway.

Regardless of this poll, it's reassuring to see that peoples attitudes seem to have shifted somewhat and that the issue of the new artwork no longer appears to be polarising opinions to the extent that it was when we first found out about it. Back then, several long-term fans of the game insisted that this would be the end for them and that they wouldn't have anything more to do with Carcassonne. :( Although I feel differently about it, it was good to see the posts from jungleboy and Curt194 suggesting what they'd do if Carc 2.0 becomes more than just another stand alone/ spin-off. :(y)

To be fair, Dan, you also didn't give an option for "I will never purchase this because of the differences in art." None of your options are explicitly anti-Carc II.

It's true that there isn't an option, but since I didn't start the poll I didn't have the chance to add one!  ;)

lol. Oops, I guess I won't blame you. I'm almost tempted to edit the question now.

Too late. I already voted and that would be even more upsetting :)

None of the options I created are anti-Carcassonne because I'm not against it full stop! People who are against Carcassonne wouldn't be on forums like Carcassonne Central would they?
