Just to clarify use of term field vs farm
« on: August 26, 2014, 10:51:58 AM »
The CAR appears to use the terms field and farm interchangeably.  I have no issue with this but wonder is there any situation where there would be a difference?

From the glossary (CAR 7.0 p. 258-259)

field
One of the four basic types of features. Connected field segments make up a farm.

farm
A set of connected field segments. A follower deployed to a farm is called a farmer. During finals coring, every completed city on a farm scores 3 points.

Thanks for the response but it does not address the question.

From
Hills & Sheep (Expansion 9)

If the field extended by the newly-placed tile already contains a farmer, the player may still
deploy his shepherd to that field, but he may not deploy his shepherd to a field already
containing another shepherd.

The word field is used where the word farm might be expected.  Again I am not objecting to this, just wondering if there is any situation where it may not be appropriate to use the words interchangeably.

thanks Gerry

If it were up to me, I'd use the term 'farm' exclusively for use with Farmers/Pigs/Barns and the word 'field' with any other expansion, fan-made or official.

According to Dictionary - World of the Game Carcassonne - German/English in German only one word is used:
Wiese - field (RGG+CAR) / farm (RGG+CAR)

Another used term:
Wiesenstück - field segment (RGG+CAR) / farm segment (CAR)

And a quote from obervet:
In the CAR, I've used "field" for the feature on the tile, and "farm" for a collection of field segments that has a follower on it and will get scored. That's probably not really a differentiation that HiG has made, though.

I am with obervet. It's a field until it has a farmer on it, when it becomes a farm.

I can appreciate that reasoning, but it just doesn't sound right to put a Shepherd on a farm.

The shepherd doesn't own the farm. He is only working on a farm: He is herding the sheep. A owner of a farm (field) is a follower as a farmer.

The correct translation of the German word "Wiese" is "meadow" in English.

ZMG uses the word "field" for the section of a "Wiese" (see the rule book of the base game).

Is it possible for an unpopulated field to be considered a farm?

Farms score points.  Fields do not.

Not to get all philosophical or anysuchlike.........  ;)

hmm... perhaps you can ask the ex-license partner RGG why they used two different words...

I was trying to do some documentation for a fan expansion that built granaries on fields and i just wanted to get the terminology correct
