Title: Ordering online at Cundco (HiG)
Post by: jungleboy on April 12, 2016, 04:44:15 AM
Cundco (http://cundco.de) is HiG's online shop, and these days mini-expansions are often released directly through Cundco, so it's an important online shop for many Carcassonne fans. We talk about Cundco in various threads, such as the postman threads or the threads for new expansions. But this information can often get lost in multiple threads so perhaps it's time we had a dedicated thread to discuss people's experiences with Cundco. Vote in the poll to share your experience about shopping with Cundco so far, and also use this thread to talk about future orders with Cundco.

Some people have had some negative experiences with Cundco recently. If you've had problems, share them and it might help others to avoid these problems in the future.

Finally, do you have any other general tips or comments to make about shopping with Cundco? Do you pay by bank transfer or by PayPal? Do they typically respond fairly quickly if you send them an email? How could the service be improved?

I'm very satisfied with Cundco. They never made any mistake with my orders and always on time. I've tried paypal and bank transfer and both seem to work fine for me. Very happy customer here.

The only thing that might come in handy is an email that reports when the order has been sent and not just changing the status on cundco.com

I also put 'very happy'- the only issue I ever had was when trying to use the spare parts form and that was resolved in the end (thanks for the support kettlefish). I have never had any problems using paypal and my orders usually arrive very quickly given the distance they travel. They do seem a bit understaffed- but for the resources they have, in my experience they generally do a good job.

I put very happy based on the one single order I placed that executed perfectly. This may askew the poll a bit.

They messed up one of my orders, but they fixed it so I am happy with them.  They have things that I can't get anywhere else.  They also have reasonable international shipping for small orders.

So have I.
I'd like to have advertising newsletter by e-mail about "highlights", news, new products and so on.

Totally happy, the largest order I placed just after Essen last year, took a few weeks to arrive, but this is to be expected.  They've replied to several of my emails within a quick turn around too.

I have made several orders with cundco (oh, maybe 10+) and each has been handled well, although not with the 'excellence' one has become accustomed to from large online businesses.   I do not mean in the execution of the order (everything I have ever ordered has arrived with no problem) but in some of the administrative issues (and they share these issues with my other two favourite german sites - Nostheide and Spielmaterial):

a)  No confirmation of shipping by email
b)  No debit/credit card payments

re a) being in the UK deliveries are normally received inside 10 days.  Confirmation of despatch is important for people living further afield perhaps. It also serves as notification that one's order has actually been processed through to despatch and isn't stuck/overlooked somewhere.

re b) Outside the €-zone bank transfer is impractical due to costs. Paypal exchange rates are pretty poor.  Several UK credit cards offer very good exchange rates (mid-market) without additional fees.  I would be surprised if a Credit Card's Merchant fees for HiG were higher than Paypal fees, so there would seem to be no reason why CC payments couldn't be accepted - but similarly Nostheide and spielmaterial don't accept them either - maybe it's a German thing?

I know there have been some unhappy experiences reported on BGG recently from one or two US buyers, and there did seem to be a lack of communication ack from HiG to the individuals while they were trying to resolve their problems.

Me? I'd have no doubt that HiG would sort-out any issues - but then in the EU were are covered by the Distance Selling Regulations, so they sort of have to.

Very happy with them. They offer lost of good stuff and very cheap. I can understand it for some that they complain about them. But I understand that they are humans and are allowed to make some mistakes. My packages always arrive pretty quick and when there is a mistake they fix it very quick.
No negative experience.

Problem is now I bought everything from their website :D

Some people have had some negative experiences with Cundco recently. If you've had problems, share them and it might help others to avoid these problems in the future.

I don't know which category to choose, honestly.  I'd say that I'm generally happy but I have had a very negative experience.

It started at the end of 2014 and it took more than 5 months and 2 phone calls from kettlefish to solve the issue. At that time, I would have clearly answered "Very unhappy" but since then, they handled a few orders properly... so I don't know what to think now.

Also, at that time, I seriously thought about writing a major rant on this forum but then, I thought that it would be a bit selfish to use my personal experience to bash a small online shop that is doing so much for this community. Maybe I was wrong? Maybe my experience would have been useful to improve the process? Or simply it would have been useful to other forum members? Thanks JB for this thread...

I'll try to briefly summarize my long and painful experience: It all started when I tried to order the River I from Big Box 5... big mistake! I think that Cundco has changed its policy since then and now clearly states that it is not possible to do that. It was not obvious back in 2014... Then it got complicated... it would have been so easy to just cancel my order but instead, why on earth did they send me other random tiles?? That meant that, not only I was not getting what I wanted but I was paying for something I didn't need... (tiles they sent were from WoF with numbers on them... but I didn't own the WoF at the time so it was totally useless! even with the expansion these would be duplicates so what's the point?). After that, I was trying to get my money back and it's not like I was hammering them with emails... I don't think I have sent more than one email per month... and it took so long that I had lost hope. Again, merit to kettlefish for helping me.

There are a few other things I don't like about Cundco:

- Their shipping cost to The Netherlands. They have simplified their categories for shipping fees and included all EU countries in the same so shipping to Bulgaria costs the same as shipping to Netherlands, which is next door? Wtf? Do they need geography lessons? I see on the enveloppe how much they have paid for shipping and I certainly don't like that they put the difference in their pockets. I presume that a seperate category for Benelux would solve this... and what about Austria & Switzerland? They ship from Munich...

- The way they have silently erased my credit that I had worked so hard to get from their system when they switched to the new website. Sometime after, while browsing their website I found out that they had done that (it was written somewhere that they had been unable to transfert the money between accounts)... so (again) I had to email them to get the money. This time it was quick but still... why is it always so hard and cumbersome?

For all these reasons I will choose "somewhat unhappy"... (and I'm nice because I'm hesitating to select "very unhappy")

I've made two orders at Cundco ; one last year and the last one a few days ago. The first time, Cundco had put in the package a wrong expansion ; in less than a week, they send me the good one and let me the wrong freely.
This time, they forgot the bag for the tiles. I send an email on saturday ; I got an answer on monday and the bag on Friday. I live in France and, on their website, they say that it take 10-25 days and I received all in less than 10 days.

I think I saw Little buildings in a gameshop here in Bergen. I could check it out and send from here as long as they have it. They might also have the phantom. Somebody interested?

Right now there is one on Ebay for under $30.  That is the cheapest I have seen it.  This along with the tower are the 2 expansions I have no interest in whatsoever.

The Tower is great; even Dan likes it now! :)

I saw a copy of Catapult in a store in Madrid a couple of weeks ago. Actually, Spain is where I got my own copy to begin with. Maybe it's popular there?

It is just not for me.  I have only played it with JCZ, so maybe I am missing something.  Unlike the dragon which seems to be a silly but fun way to remove opponent's meeples, the Tower just traps them (based on height of all things) until you can do the automatic prisoner exchange.  My main take away is the main part of the tower is the tile stacker just like the main part of the catapult is the catapult itself.  Sure there are some new tiles, but not exactly the cool new rules and features of the other expansions.

Also it really isn't available anywhere here.  I can still order it from Cundco and pay a ton in shipping.  I am hoping Paul hooks me up with the other expansions I am missing.  If not, maybe I will throw 15 extra Euro just to have it.

Overall I'm very happy with Cundco but I've only ordered two times from them. The first package took 15 work days to reach my house in the USA and arrived as seen in the photo below. The contents were shaken up but there was no water damage and only one box was slightly smashed. One school tile has the meeple shape embossed into it from the weight the courier stacked on top of my box and one winter promo tile has a notch on the corner but is still playable. Cundco did include a free plush meeple and cloth bag so I was happy and found no need to contact them. Sometimes you need to take a step back and realize that you're using a hunk of metal and man-made materials to send a bunch of electrons to the other side of the globe where a person can interpret it and then mail you a box over to your house, 7000 km away, and it all takes less than a month to complete. It's amazing if you ask me. The second purchase arrived in 12 working days and there was no issue.

I forgot to include that I use PayPal to pay for the purchases, they usually clear within a few minutes of the transaction. I've never had to contact them. Their selection is great, I just wish they had Big Box 5 on their site.

My experience has been about 50/50. Three times I have ordered multiple things and something was missing. Three times (some overlapping) there was a significant delay between ordering and receiving. And with two orders I emailed them and did not receive a response for over two weeks. That being said, the other half of my orders – usually small orders of one or two items – have shipped quickly with no issues at all. Most of the problem orders are when I order around Christmas or right after something has been made available on the website (and I stupidly decide to tack on a bunch of other things like loose meeples just because). My advice, don't order during peak times.

I'm mostly satisfied with CundCo.

I've made about 8 or 9 orders from CundCo over the past year, all from their "newly remodeled" site.  I am Florida in the United States and it has taken anywhere from 10 to 45 days for me to receive my envelope of goodies from them.  No problem. Small company, few employees, very long distance, I understand.

Their website has gotten better at calculating the shipping price.  I always add items slowly to the cart until the shipping price jumps up from 3.95 to 24.95.   That's when I know that I've done one item too many.  I was able to empty my cart and re-add items until I got the max possible for the 3.95 envelope rate.  You used to have to empty the whole cart to reset the shipping price, because even after removing all items but just one, the higher shipping price remained.  That has been fixed.

Still, being in the US I find myself limited to items that can fit into an envelope.  I've wanted to order the 6-minis when they had them, or Princess & Dragon, or Big Box 2012....... but I've never been willing to fork out 25 euros for shipping, especially if the expansion itself is only 11 euros.

As far as their order accuracy.... I've received 3 incomplete shipments from them.   I sent them emails regarding the missing items all 3 times.  They got back to me right away 2 times and told me that they'd ship out the missing items right away.  The other email I sent was not responded to so after 3 weeks of waiting for a response I wrote back to them, apologized for writing again, and explained that my missing item issue had not yet been addressed.  I received an email a few days later apologizing and saying they'd send out the missing item.  All 3 times I eventually got everything that I paid for.

That being said, when I wrote to them after the 3rd time that an item was missing I began to feel like they were going to stop believing me.  That they were going to think that I was not really missing anything and that I was just trying to take advantage of them.  This was definitely not the case as I am a very honest person.  However, since it is such a small company with only a handful of employees they probably recognize some of the same names appearing frequently.  And, if they get multiple emails from a person regarding missing items they might get suspicious.

They are very nice people and very friendly, but I really hope they don't forget something again.... I don't mind waiting but it is starting to feel awkward.

Overall, I am glad that they are there, that I can get an envelope full of stuff for 4 euros shipping, I can get expansions not readily/cheaply available elsewhere and I can order replacement tiles/figures.

Suggestions for them:  1.  offer to open a box and dump the tiles and pieces into an envelope so I can order Princess and Dragon for a total of 17 euros instead of 42 euros.  2. put a limit on number of expansions someone can buy if there are very limited quantities.  (I missed out on Besiegers by minutes).   3.  Double-check orders, please?

If anyone from CundCo is reading this, I love you guys!!!!!!!!  :green-meeple:

Cundco have now made quite clear that their tile service is a 'replacement' tile service, not a service for ordering expansions.
Besiegers was only recently not available at Cundco.  I bought my copy from them in late 2014 it had been available for a long time.  Also their last batch was limited to 1 per customer.
I'm not sure what you mean here but - They ask you to correctly fill in your order, so they don't need to email every customer to verify their order was was intended....no online retailer does this since the advent of online forms and shopping carts.

I've probably made about a dozen orders from Cundco in the past and they've never really let me down that I can think of. Plus, every single order has included some small freebie whether that be sweets, stickers or big cloth bags. I know it isn't much, but I can't think of anywhere else I regularly order things from that does the same, and it's not like I need the goodwill gestures to keep shopping with them either as most of the stuff I order from them can't be bought anywhere else for a comparable price.

It's very easy to let individuals bad experiences taint what is otherwise a very good, and valuable service that is still comparatively little known. If more people knew about it they would never have anything as it would all be on eBay for twice the price (at best).

I don't think they do themselves any favours by creating artificial rushes once or twice a year when new expansions come out for a limited time only. That must at least double or treble their workload during those periods and I'm not entirely sure why they do it unless for the benefit of those who don't want to wait until October? So, I will heed whaleyland's words of wisdom and continue to avoid ordering at peak times...

Right, but therein lies part of the problem. If you want the Easter promos before October, or if you want Besiegers when they release only 100 copies etc, then ordering at peak time is unavoidable. As you say, they create these limited time rushes every Easter themselves, and then if/when they can't handle the volume of orders and things go wrong, they plead that they are a small company and we should forgive their mistakes.

Even though I created this thread, I will hold off on giving my full opinion (and revealing my vote!) for another couple of weeks after I see how my two most recent orders play out.

Exactly. But far from people expressing their gratitude that these expansions have been made available early, the main upshot of their efforts seems to be that people are unhappy about the disrupted service. Rightly so in some cases.

So, with this in mind, I think they should make life easier for themselves (and consequently receive less bad press) by not offering anything until it is officially released on a permanent basis. There will still be rushes when stuff is first released, but hopefully this peak demand won’t be quite so high given that there will be no official end date on its availability (until stock runs out of course).

Even though I created this thread, I will hold off on giving my full opinion (and revealing my vote!) for another couple of weeks after I see how my two most recent orders play out.

Or - they could open orders for the Easter promo 4 weeks before Easter for 2 weeks (or until the stock runs out) with *no* shipping of the orders until the 2 week period is closed. Then they have up to 2 weeks to package the orders (in quiet times) and then ship them out in the 2 weeks before Easter.

It's all about expectation management - especially when the operation is so small.

The poster is somewhat flamboyant in his language, but if he has been waiting for 6 months for a problem to be resolved, maybe he's entitled to be.  OTOH he has  caused problems in the past even with shipments from his next door neighbouring country,  so it may be entirely his fault to begin with.

I was not referring to tile replacement.  I want to purchase the full expansion of Princess & Dragon, which they do have available for sale, for 11.99 euros.  I just want them to open the box and put the contents in an envelope instead of a box.  That way I'd pay just 4 euros for shipping instead of 25 euros.

The last batch of Besiegers was not limited to one per person.

As far as double checking the order, I mean to re-read the order to themselves and double-check to make sure they have put all of the items into the envelope.  Obviously if I make an error when I am order I am the only one to blame, and it would be highly unreasonable to expect them to read my mind and know I did not properly order what I had intended to order.

@Joe: There's every chance that you may be able to arrange delivery to one of our German friends for a greatly reduced postage rate. Then ask them to extract the contents of the box into a padded envelope and send it on to you. Would probably end up costing a few Euros more as you'd have to pay for two lots of postage, but since you're unlikely to get someone at Cundco to open the box for you and offer a reduced postage rate, you'd still be saving on the > 10 Euro outside of Germany rate...

Have you checked the status on the Cundco website? I also ordered on 21/3 but it hasn't been processed yet (despite two reminder emails).

I did, and it says it's been shipped, but it doesn't say when.

If there's a tracking number you can load it into DHL and see where your order is.

Today's package was a good example of what I see as the 'hit and miss' nature of Cundco.

Hit - Crop Circles I. Huge thanks to Valheru for the tip. I know this was a bit sneaky, but what I like is how Cundco seemed to recognise it as sneaky and said, 'Well played, sir.' They obviously knew that we were going for the full expansion, so they even included the rules for us. I like it how they saw a flood of these orders after Valheru's tip, and decided to respect and honour those orders while at the same time preventing anyone else from doing it in the future.

Hit - Extra meeples. As detailed here (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/community/index.php?topic=2235.msg38631#msg38631), I ordered some extra meeples to try to make the King and the Falconer for the Falcon expansion for Carcassonne: the Castle. I actually tried to order the light and dark coloured wood as Hunters and Gatherers pieces, saying 'if possible' afterwards because I figured that they didn't have that type of meeple in those colours. They didn't, but they sent me two regular meeples instead along with the two Mayors, and these regular meeples will work just fine as Falconers.

Miss - I ordered four spare abbey tiles, and the Friday expansion for Carcassonne: South Seas, and neither was included in the shipment, without explanation or refund. I only ordered the abbeys to try to 'hide' my intention for Crop Circles I but including some more tiles, and I don't even own South Seas (yet) - I just added it because I still had some room to spare under €10 - so these aren't critical items for me and to be honest I'd forgotten I'd even ordered Friday until I looked at the order sheet again today. So I'm thrilled with my crop circles and my Falcon meeples, but a bit bewildered why they couldn't complete the seemingly more simple parts of the order.

You are very welcome, Jungleboy. Happy to see that I've made a couple of people happy and at the same time saved some money for them. And you're hitting the nail on the head here, well put and credit to Cundco for this.

Since I ordered only once, I chose "Somewhat happy". I ordered it on thursday before the easter-weekend and it arrived very soon after, I'm happy, that I got the german cathedrals and the Spiel doch! magazine with the labyrinths without any problems.

I've been patiently waiting over four months now, since an order placed on December 14 (my first and only attempt to order from Cundco). I have emailed Cundco four times now but received NO response at all -- very frustrating and unprofessional.

Is there anything I can do other than continue waiting in silence and/or open a PayPal dispute to seek a refund?

I'm doing everything I can to be patient and gracious toward Cundco....

Well done on being patient and gracious, and sorry to hear about the problems with your order. Unfortunately it often seems random at Cundco - they respond quickly to some emails and never to others; some people have no problems at all and other people have large ones. Waiting for over four months is an exceptional case so perhaps kettlefish could mention your situation the next time she speaks to someone from HiG.

stalcupojoy, I need some detail information about your order at CundCo (order number, order date, your name, what pieces did you order, the dates when you have send them an email) - please send me a PM with the details. I will forward the information to CundCo.

I can't promise much, but in the past they resolved some problems with my "cry for help".

My March 21 Cundco order for German Cathedrals and Besiegers still hasn't been processed. Because they are both 'limited edition' expansions, I suspect that I am not going to get either of them. So a refund and an explanation would be nice if they cannot deliver the products I ordered and paid for. I have contacted Cundco three times (once per week for the last three weeks) with no response.

Of my last three orders from Cundco:
- One took six weeks to process
- One was missing two items
- One has not been processed after a month

So I voted 50/50 a week or so ago but I'm moving into the 'somewhat unhappy' camp now.

I'm very satisfied with Cundco. They never made any mistake with my orders and always on time. I've tried paypal and bank transfer and both seem to work fine for me. Very happy customer here.

The only thing that might come in handy is an email that reports when the order has been sent and not just changing the status on cundco.com
CundCo fans might be interested to hear that I got a "your order has shipped" mail with my last order (shipped today)

Same here

I've yet to hear back from Cundco about the German Cathedrals that were missing from my order of March 21st.  I've been emailing them every few days, and no response.  I could open a dispute with Paypal, but I really just want them to ship this item that (I assume) someone forgot to put in the envelope.  I have never waited over two weeks for a response from any online retailer, I can't believe they are so busy that they can't answer one of my emails.  If it weren't for this forum, I would never have waited this long!

Same! I'm grateful to have learned from this forum that Cundco can take forever, before I placed my order. Otherwise I would have filed a dispute a long, long time ago.

Good for you! Hopefully everything arrives complete and soon.

Meanwhile I have written 4 very polite emails to them in 4 weeks, and kettlefish mentioned it to someone at HiG last week. But they have still not replied and the order remains unprocessed after 6 weeks.

Hi stalcupojoy
yes they have received a long email from me (the cases with you and about some other members), and I've called with them 2 weeks ago. When Moritz Brunnhofer came back from business travel they had a long meeting at CundCo... Now we have the open letter from the CundCo Shop and they send the orders to the customers.

Time for my weekly email to Cundco:

---

Dear Sir/Madam,

I made an order on 21st March (No. 24152, paid by bank transfer on 22 March) for German Cathedrals and the Besiegers which has not been processed. This is the 7th time I have written to you about this order with no response so far. Can you please check to see if payment has been received and, if so, can you please process the order?

Kind regards,
Nick

That's exactly what it says on their website for my order placed on the same day.  I wonder if my order had the same issue and if I need to contact them, or if solving your problem will lead them to solving mine as well.

It sounds like they're different issues. They never processed my order until today, but it sounds like yours was processed and shipped, but somehow hasn't arrived. It's still probably best to contact them and confirm that they did actually ship it.

So i waited for my newest order to reply in this topic. It was the third time i ordered from CundCo (i think), and so far so good. This time they were really fast. I placed my order on april 30 and payed it on the first of may. On the fourth i got an email that my order was shipped. So i was shocked and very happy. I think it was the long weekend that made it last until yesterday to receive the order at my house. In the end today, because i wasnt home yesterday. But still, very happy!

Only downside, the order wasnt complete... they forgot to package one of the things i ordered, although it was checked on the paper order. But, i send them an email about it and they responded within 10 minutes with two apolagies and an conformation that they will send me the missing pieces. So all in all, still a (very) good expercience with CundCo  :)

My long-awaited order arrived today ... and as I half-expected, I didn't get everything I ordered. This is the second time in a row this has happened, but I have somehow ended up pretty happy both times. Last time, I was happy to get Corn Circles I through the back door so I didn't mind that the Friday expansion for South Seas wasn't included.

This time, I ordered Besiegers and German Cathedrals, and I got Besiegers and ... Cathars!! Unpunched and in shrink wrap. How strange, right? I already have Cathars, but a shrink-wrapped version is certainly a nice item to have. So I'll hang onto it for now and wait until Essen to get the German Cathedrals.

Hehe, nice one. Or maybe it's just the standard-issue replacement for German Cathedrals when they're unavailable. Perhaps CKorfmann can get some Cathars if his Cathedrals never arrive...

Shipping from Cundco goes up dramatically if the order is over €10. So to get around the limit of 5, and to save on shipping, just make two separate orders.

Cundco has a good service... and a big sense of humor. I received, last week, my orange set of meeples. Unfortunately, I've received a broken builder.

I send an email to Cundco service on saturday : "I've just a little problem with the Orange Builder which is broken (see photo attach). If you can do anything for this, it will be nice. If not, no matter ; we can play with this unarmed builder ! (probably a knight comin' back for war)."

Till Dechêne, from Cundco, reply me yesterday : " I wanted to let you know that an injured knight should not be forced to work as a builder. So please find a nice retreat for him since we'll send you a young and healthy orange builder."

It's what I've just done !!!

Placed my second order with Cundco recently, this time shipping to Thailand! Andreas was very responsive and helpful with making sure the Thai address came out correctly, as the mail here can be quite finicky it seems. (Two letters from the U.S. have failed to reach us in the past month.)

Now waiting and hoping my package from Cundco makes it through! In any case, great service this time around.

EDIT: Package arrived today -- made it to me through the Thai mail system. Hooray!

I had the same problem but I had bank details of cundco saved so I used it and I already received my order. For Infos, your order number is written in your cundco account.

Passed and paid order on 20/10, received today. Bank details are below and by just writing order number in your payement it will be ok.

I placed an order with Cundco, Oct. 19th (included Watchtowers), which still shows, 'Your order has not been processed yet'. I have a Paypal receipt so I don't think that is the issue.

I placed a separate order Oct. 21st ( included Winter edition mini exp.), which was processed and I received a few days ago.

I wonder if the hold up on the previous order is due to a tight supply on Watchtower? Anyone else have recent issues?

I've sent 2 emails about 2 weeks apart without a response.  :(

I've placed at least a dozen orders with Cundco with little problem, other than the odd long wait. Hopefully there is a response and the order ships soon.
