General / Carcassonne Central Expansion League #1: Traders & Builders
« on: January 02, 2015, 06:52:20 AM »
What better way to start the new year than with a brand new Carcassonne Central online tournament?!  :(y) ;D :(y)

It's free to enter and anyone with a PC/ Laptop/ Mac (i.e. anybody who can run JCloisterZone) can take part, regardless of skill level. Here are a few points on how it will work:
  • All players will be divided between a number of groups so that no group contains more than 7 or 8 players (preferably). Each group will have a dedicated administrator to oversee the running of the group and keep a master record of scores.
  • Every player must play a single head-to-head (2-player) game of Carcassonne against every other person in their group. Games will be played online using JCloisterZone so please ensure you have downloaded the latest version of this and have got it running on your PC well in advance of your first game.
  • Each game must include just the basic game plus the Traders & Builders expansion only, for a total of 96 tiles. The starting player should be selected at random by checking the “Randomise Seating Order” checkbox on the pre-game screen.
  • Every player is awarded 3 league points for every game they win, or 1 point for a draw. This will be the primary ranking criteria for the league.
  • The total number of points scored by you and the total number of points scored against you (by your opponents) throughout all league games you’ve played will be logged and used to calculate your total score differential (total points won minus total points scored against you). This will be the secondary ranking criteria for the league.
  • Once you have finished your game, please post a screenshot of the final scores (these will appear in a pop-up window immediately after the final tile has been placed) back to the forums along with a write-up of your game if you so wish.
  • Once everyone has played everyone else within their groups, similarly ranked players will play each other to determine an overall ranking (i.e. Group A winner vs Group B winner, Group A 2nd vs Group B 2nd etc).
There will be more details to follow, but if you'd like to take part please register your interest by posting below. Closing date for entries is the end of next week (11th Jan) with a view to having the first games played at the start of the following week.

The exact duration of the competition will depend on the number of participants, but if you're likely to be away for any sustained period of time between 12th January and early February then please be mindful of this before entering!

Best regards, and good luck!

Upcoming Scheduled Games / Anybody free tonight/ Wednesday?
« on: December 16, 2014, 07:40:05 AM »
My wife is out at her works Christmas party tonight so I will have a few hours to myself once the kids are in bed and wondered if anybody else here might also be free and interested in a game or two of Carcassonne (via JCloisterZone)? Any time from 8 – 11pm UK time would be best...

She’s at another party tomorrow night (lucky thing) so I will be free for the same period, 8 – 11pm tomorrow too.

General / Carcassonne Central Tournaments for 2015
« on: December 16, 2014, 02:40:28 AM »
After the success of the two Carcassonne tournaments that we’ve run here this year (plus the forum photo game), I’ve been consulting with my most trusted confidants about what tournaments could be run in 2015 to keep things interesting whilst continuing to hone our Carcassonne playing skills.

At present, the plan is to build on this year’s success by running five different online competitions over the course of the year. Two of these will be re-runs of the competitions held this year which means that the base-game only Carcassonne League and the World Cup of Carcassonne Central should both be taking place again in 2015 and will follow the same (or similar) rules as they did this year.

In addition, there will be three new “expansion leagues” which will be similar in format to the previous league but with the exception that all games will be played using a certain expansion; one expansion per league. Which expansions will be included hasn’t been decided yet, but it’s likely that all three will be chosen from the first five major expansions and that just one of the more destructive expansions will be included.

As before, all games will be played online using JCloisterZone. There will be opportunities to resolve any technical difficulties nearer the time (or just drop me a message if you like), but if you think you might be interested in taking part in one or more of these competitions then now is the time to make sure you have the latest version of JCloisterZone up and running on your computer and that you know how to play it!

More details regarding the first of the expansion leagues and the opportunity to sign up for it will be available later this month so stay tuned!

The Marketplace / Zombie Character Meeples!
« on: December 10, 2014, 02:36:22 AM »
If anyone is interested in zombies and/ or custom meeples then you may be interested in this KickStarter project from Meeplesource:

Zombie Character Meeples!

It’s only a very short, relatively low-key campaign and it’s only due to run for another 38 hours. So if you like their work and want some cool new meeples then you’d better be quick!

Carcassonne Central News #5 - November 2014

Welcome
Hello you! As exciting as December is (especially if you've got an advent calendar), it's pretty dim and gloomy outside at the moment and I'm guessing that I won't be the only person reading this who misses the sunshine. If this is the situation you're finding yourself in at present, I'm only too pleased to be able to brighten your otherwise dull day with this, the latest (fifth!) edition of Carcassonne Central News...

If you're feeling out of touch with what's been going down on the forums lately then you could do worse than to have a flick through the Forum News section for a quick taste of some of the latest typed offerings. Also, bridges! Where would we be without them? They've changed my life and yours, admit it, so it's high time they were recognised via the tips section. Plus, Big Guy brings us his thoughts about the fan-made Mountains expansion and there's another CKT to get stuck into (be careful, it involves a dragon) and a few other bits as well. Enjoy!

Under Starter's Orders
Can't decide which player should go first? Tired of having to come up with increasingly intricate ways to ensure that whatever "random" mechanism you've convinced the other players to use will always be favourable towards yourself? There's a good reason that each player has seven meeples sitting in front of them y'know, and it's nothing to do with claiming features once the game has begun...

Try this: next time you play, get each player to select six of their sturdiest looking standard meeples and build a pyramid out of them. When players have finished their pyramids they must balance their seventh meeple on top of their head and shout "Look at me!" at a volume befitting of the occasion. The first player to do this wins the privilege of drawing and placing the first playable tile and may also help themselves to a biscuit or nominate another player to go to the shops to buy biscuits if none are available.

(I always feel sorry for the one that gets left over)

If you have an alternative method of choosing the start player that you'd like to share with the rest of the community, please let me know! Seriously, do. As you can probably tell, I am getting desperately low on ideas now and it's only a matter of time before they start getting truly ridiculous (if they haven't already). Help?  :-\

Forum News
News and Events\ 3.Fan-Meeting with Klaus-Jürgen Wrede - Burg Konradsheim - 23.11.2014
Someday I'd love to visit one of the many Carcassonne fan-meetings so that I can meet Klaus-Jürgen Wrede and everyone else that gets to make the big decisions regarding what's next for Carcassonne, and take part in the various competitions. Since they're almost always in Germany though, this is rather difficult to justify at the moment, so it's fortunate that we have the next best thing right here on the forums in kettlefish who went to Erftstadt recently and has reported back about what went on...

News and Events\ RCA project. the CAR translated in italian
Here's something for the Italians amongst us: The Regolamento Completo Aggiornato (an Italian translation of our much-loved Complete Annotated Rules). This is the brain child of aenima with some assistance from quevy, but if you can speak/ read Italian then I'm sure they'd both be glad to hear from you!

CarcCentral Carcassonne League\ World Cup of Carcassonne Central\ World Cup - Knock-out Stage!
The World Cup of Carcassonne Central finally has its first champion! Despite letting him use his favourite colour, Carcking ( :green-meeple:) beat MrNumbers ( :red-meeple:) by 349 points to 327. So please join me in congratulating both players, and stay tuned for news of our next online competition(s) ;) :(y). Also, if you were one of the 20 who took part in this, please remember to drop me a PM if you want to be on the receiving end of your prize(s)!

General\ Ark of the Covenant availability
If you've bought copies of the Dutch/ Belgian Monasteries expansion through SRBO or The Darmstadt expansion through Khonnor then you'll already be aware just what a wonderful place these forums can be when its members pull together to help each other out (see this post for further encouragement). With this in mind, Yellow had just discovered that his local store in Sweden still have copies of one of the most difficult to obtain spin-off Carcassonne games: Ark of the Covenant, and he's willing to help all other interested parties get their hands on a copy too! Please check this post if you're interested.

General\ Element(s) of the Week: The Builders, The Cult, The Wagon and The Count
Whaleyland's "Element of the Week" series has continued throughout November with four more interesting posts discussing specific features of Carcassonne and how people prefer to use them. So if you're interested to know how you can use your builder to help steal someone's city or use a Cult place to recover a trapped monk, look no further than the links below:
General\ The abbot gray
In September this year we learnt about the new version of Carcassonne: "Carcassonne 2.0". It wasn't until he'd bought it though, that quevy discovered there was no Abbot meeple in grey! So what did he do? Like a one-man A-Team, quevy made his own grey Abbots! And not just one either; he's made enough Abbots to... umm... do something that would normally require loads of Abbots. I must admit that I'm struggling to think of such an event, but I'm sure there are loads of them. Anyway, Abbots (grey ones).

General\ I love the postman...
If you've just become the proud recipient of some new Carcassonne expansion, spin-off game or other accessory then don't keep it to yourself. Share your excitement with the rest of the community (along with photos of said purchases) by declaring your love for your postman/ postwoman here.

CarcCentral Carcassonne League\ Upcoming Scheduled Games\ Weekly Online Game
The weekly online game has been running for 8 weeks now (although on one of those weeks only one person played; congratulations on your impressive win MrNumbers). It has become the source of much fun and banter between several of our forum members and is also a great opportunity to test some of the strategies discussed in the Element of the Week series. So if you're free at 9:30 (CET) on a Thursday and feel like grabbing a slice of the action then please do; there's plenty to go round and we've got custard to go with it...

The Workshop\ Crafters' Guild\ Carcasonne wooden box(es)
Carcassonne storage was discussed at length on the forums during November as most of us are finding it increasingly difficult to store our ever-growing collections in one place. However, new forum member Valthornet was able to prove, in one post, that I've wasted my life chasing around after databases and should have become a carpenter...

Anything Else\ 2014 Jack Vasel Memorial Auction
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this years Jack Vasel Memorial Auction (Board Game Geek) which has raised an unofficial total of over $72,000 for charity! There were several interesting Carcassonne items available including Ark of the Covenant (won by jungleboy) and the original Corn Circles (won by gmartinscott). Well done guys, I hope you enjoy your new additions!

Carcassonne Player's Guide #5: A Bridge Too Far?
Owing to the fact that MrNumbers has ventured back to the dark and dangerous land of being Dad to a brand new baby all over again, you're going to have to make do with me for this month's tips section I'm afraid. Or simply skip it altogether. But why would you do that when I have so many bridge pictures to show off?

Bridges come as part of the 8th large expansion for Carcassonne: Bridges, Castles & Bazaars. Along with towers, bridges can add an aesthetically pleasing third dimension to the landscape that develops during games of Carcassonne, but there's much more to them than this! In their simplest form, a bridge allows you to extend a road over another landscape tile (the tile you're placing or one adjacent to it) provided that the bridge is placed with its feet in a field on both sides. It doesn't take long to get to grips with them, but they can be very handy in a variety of situations which I've described below.

How many times has someone done this to you?

With the basic tiles there's no way out of this and the game is over for this meeple. But if you happen to be using bridges, the meeple can still be recovered and will win you four points in the process:

Bridges can also be helpful when you're trying to take over another player's city as they can negate most efforts made by your opponent to make this as difficult for you as possible:

Bridges can also help you to defend your roads too. My normal reaction to something like the situation below (left) would be to build around the tile required to join the two roads in Blue's favour such that a t-junction would be required, splitting the two roads in the process. But this doesn't guarantee any kind of safety when expansions are used. If you use a bridge though, you can extend both roads away from each other which will hopefully buy you enough time to complete your road before your opponent has developed another opportunity to steal it!

All else aside, the most important thing to remember about bridges is that they are very powerful when they're used to merge farms since bridges don't separate fields. In the example below you will see two farms divided by a road running between them. Blue has two farmers in the top farm but this farm is worth just six points. The bottom farm is far more valuable but Red controls this with two farmers against Blue's one:

Thanks to a cleverly placed bridge, Blue has merged both farms into one which he now has overall control of!

Another example of how bridges can change the game in terms of farmer placement is shown below, this time in a game that also includes the Phantom. Bridging over the road that separates the normal meeple from the phantom means that they are both now joined to the main farm at the same time:

That's all for now. I hope these tips inspire you to buy this expansion if you don't already have it, or to think creatively about how best you can make the most of your bridges if you do. Just a word of warning though, farms can be significantly harder to keep track of when there are a dozen or so bridges on the table so make sure you're aware just how huge that huge farm really is! Also, please note that the bridges shown in the examples above aren't the standard wooden bridges that come with this expansion as I have replaced these with "pimped" bridges.

Member of the Month
Although it hasn't happened yet (but will happen soon - I promise - blame it on my kids) each month the winner of our Member of the Month award receives a specially made tile out of recognition for the contribution they've made to Carcassonne Central. On this occasion however, I'm fully expecting that the special tile will be carefully and artistically redesigned by its recipient, making it into a triangle in the process, before being posted back onto the forums for others to download. This revelation in itself will probably be enough for most of us to guess who this month's winner is, but for those who haven't got it yet, here are some further clues...

:(y) He might be interested in a game of Hunters & Gatherers with you as long as the Scout expansion is NOT included

:(y) He doesn't want there to be any confusion over which players have built the highest tower or completed most monasteries, most cult-places or the biggest forest

:(y) He doesn't do things by halves when it comes to storage...

:(y) ...but he certainly does when it comes to designing new tiles

I don't know how much more help I can offer (but click the thumbs by the points above if you're interested) so I might as well just tell you if you haven't guessed yet. So, many congratulations to Darwin and thank you so much for your valuable input regarding so many different issues!

Fan-Span Focus: Mountains (by Scott and Novelty, review by Big Guy)

INVASIVENESS: D
  • Tiles used in said game: 117, New from Expansion: 45
  • Number of total followers per player: 7, no change from base game
  • Meeple Types: 1 (normal), no change from base game
  • Tile Shapes: 1 (square), no change from base game
  • Tile Side types: 4 (City, Road, Field, Mountain), New from Expansion: 1 (Mountain)
  • Feature Types: 3 (City, Road, Field, Cloister), no change from base game
  • Other additions: 2 (Mountain placement rules, Mountain scoring rules)
  • This is a moderately invasive expansion. The biggest addition is a new tile side type, which affects tile placement in several ways. The other important addition is the Mountain scoring rules, which are moderately complex. D-score, which is consistent with another similar expansion: Forests.

QUALITY: 5
  • Very good tile quality and artwork. Rules document is top-notch. The rules are in the correct turn format and worded well. All rule additions make sense. No rule gaps found. Well done overall on the quality here.

FUN-NESS: 3
  • BREAKING THE RULES: Mountains are not a new feature type, because features can have owners. This makes mountains unique: you can score points for them without owning them. They can't be owned. It also doesn't matter if mountains are 'completed', which is good since there's no reference to 'completing' mountain ranges in the rules. It only matters if you 'add onto' an existing mountain range with your tile placement. This ability to score points without the need of followers is exciting, and while I appreciate how the base game punishes those who mis-manage their followers, I also appreciate the additional options presented by this expansion.
  • MOUNTAINS IN THE WAY: Any expansion that adds a tile side type makes the game a little more clunky, IMHO. It is now that much harder to close gaps, that much more likely that there will be un-closable gaps, and that much more unlikely to find that PERFECT 4-sided tile you need. Given the tile count, roughly about 1 in 3 tiles drawn will have at least one mountain side. Annoyingly, 1 in 3 of the mountain tiles drawn will have ONLY mountains and fields, allowing for very few follower placement options. And many tile combinations simply don't exist now. For example, there is no tile in this expansion that contains 2 or more city sides AND 1 or more mountain sides. Anyone who needs a tile that fits this description is out of luck. There are other examples, but this is one of the most common.
  • THE SOUND OF MUSIC, I MEAN POINTS: Points are awarded based on how many sides of the tile you just placed border other tiles, and how many of those sides were mountains. Hefty point sums can be had in certain scenarios, but this doesn't present balance issues as many of these scenarios are highly unlikely. It's exciting and dangerous to set up 'mountain gaps' in the board, as there is no way to 'own' that gap before it's complete, or stop your opponents from netting points for closing it. Those who want more reliance on luck will like this mechanic, and those who don't may not like it as much.

OVERALL: 3
I have mixed opinions about this expansion. The quality is excellent, and it's very easy to pick up and play. The possibility of getting some hefty points without investing a follower is exciting, and the mountains are a unique addition to the game. However, the higher reliance on luck as well as the higher chance for 'un-closable gaps' brought the overall score down for me. It's definitely a fun, professional and inventive expansion, and I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to try having another tile side.

It's also worth noting that the HIGH PLACES expansion addresses several of the more likely 'un-closable gaps' that occur in this expansion. I'd recommend playing with either HIGH PLACES or another sub-expansion for the MOUNTAINS, and add a point for the FUN score and the OVERALL score if you do.

Carcassonne Knowledge Tester (CKT) #5: What's For Lunch?

Last month I taunted you with a particularly vicious Carcassonne Knowledge Tester. Apparently it wasn't quite vicious enough though as no less than five people were successful in finding all of my deliberate mistakes (plus one more in some cases). Let's have a look at what they were:

  • 1. Mayors can only be placed in cities. This one is on a bridge, which is a road, so is not allowed. What a knight-mayor! (this is the only pun I have)
  • 2. There is a builder in a city by himself. A player's builder can only be added to a city if the player already has at least one knight in the city. If their last remaining knight is removed from a city that also contains their builder then the builder must also be removed.
  • 3. There is a pig on a farm by itself. A player's pig can only be added to a farm if the player already has at least one farmer on the farm. If their last remaining farmer is removed from a farm that also contains their pig then the pig must also be removed.
  • 4. Every time a tile with a volcano gets placed, the dragon must be moved to it immediately. So where is the dragon? He's nowhere to be seen, so this is another mistake.
  • 5. The Mage figure has been left standing on a complete feature (a road) rather than being removed from the board as soon as the feature he occupied was completed. However, it has also been pointed out to me that there are no tiles bearing the Mage & Witch icon either so the Mage shouldn't even be on the board to begin with! Whilst this is true, it was entirely unintentional so well done if you spotted it!
  • 6. Why is this farmer on the board? Farmers and barns can't live happily together on farms like this! If a farmer has already been placed when a barn goes down on his farm then he receives his full score (3 points per city) and is returned to his owner. If a farmer is placed on an adjacent farm that gets joined to a farm with a barn then he receives 1 point per city and is returned to his owner.
  • 7. Bridges must go from field to field (the parts of them that touch the ground must always be touching field rather than city or road. The bridge with the phantom on it is fine, the one below it has been placed illegally.
  • 8. There is a direct "u-turn" in the river. Some people are more lenient than others with regards to what actually constitutes a u-turn but direct u-turns like this are never allowed as they can prevent the legal placement of any/ all subsequent river tiles. And deep down, nobody wants that.
  • 9. Abbeys can only be used to fill a hole so must have all tiles othaganolly adjacent to them (i.e. directly to the north, east, south and west) already in place before they can be placed. In this case there is no tile directly to the north of the Abbey, so this is not a valid placement.
Congratulations to SRBO, Guy, MrNumbers, jungleboy and Vital Pluymers who were all brave enough to take this on and put right what once went wrong in doing so. Kids nowadays eh? They don't know their Carcassonne...

Considering that we're all adults, the fact that most of us here are afraid of... dragons... may be rather surprising to some. But if they'd ever felt the pain of a game-winningly valuable farmer of theirs being eaten before their very eyes, you can be sure that they'd feel the same way as we do. So please try to cast your terror to one side for a moment, and let's have a look at the apocalyptic scale of the damage that our mutual foe can inflict in the example below:

(whoops! Please ignore the "deliberate" mistake [Abbey tile is illegally placed] as it was late and I was in a hurry when I set this out...  :-[)

As the tile in the top-right corner is placed, your task this month is to identify anything on the board that is safe from becoming the dragon's lunch, if indeed anything is safe! If you think you know the answer or even if you don't but feel that you can trust your instincts and guess, please let me know via PM. It's good fun, you can have as many guesses as you like and you'll get an honourable mention in next month's newsletter. So what's not to like? As usual, the correct answer will be discussed next month. Good luck!  8)

C-art-cassonne
It's now time to tut and shake your head and ask yourself "is that art?" as we have a look at some of November's artistic offerings and other images that will be of interest to any aspiring Carcassonne player. There were quite a lot to choose from this month, but these were my favourites:

(posted by jungleboy in General\ Carcassonne background pictures for phones/tablets/computers)

(posted by kettlefish in General\ The Wagon - Element of the Week #11)

(posted by Ailurus in Meet the Members\ Ailurus)

Forum Statistics
Since October is always a very busy month for Carcassonne Central, our November stats might seem a little disappointing by comparison. So, this time I've compared last month's stats against the same period for 2013 so we can see what a difference a year's made:

83 new topics: up 246% on 11/13
1423 new posts: up 305% on 11/13
85 new members: up 44% on 11/13
50 members simultaneously online: up 85% on 11/13
226,204 page views: up 94% on 11/13

496 Facebook fans
88 Twitter followers

When viewed this way, our incredible growth is hard to ignore. So thank you everyone for your enthusiasm and dedication to our favourite game, and for filling our forums with so much mutual encouragement and support in the process! ;D

The Last Tile
And so, as another newsletter draws to a close, this is the place to say Happy Birthday to quevy and to congratulate MrNumbers on the safe arrival of his brand new baby daughter ("MissNumbers"?) It's also worth pointing out that "you don't need to go to SRBO" (I've turned this into a sort of jingle in my head) if you're after a copy of the Dutch/ Beligian Monasteries as these are now available directly from cundco.de. Also available is the Spiel 2014 tile for Carcassonne 2.0 which is free if you're placing an order and write them a little Christmas poem (yes seriously). So, the next time you see someone on eBay trying to sell either of these things for £25 feel free to laugh at them very loudly indeed...

All that remains is for me to wish you a very merry Christmas. I'm already looking forward to reading about all the cool new Carcassonne stuff that our members will be receiving from various loved ones (hopefully), and seeing new members discover the wonderful world of Carcassonne after being introduced to it for the first time over the holidays. Have a good one!

General / The Game of Love Podcast
« on: November 26, 2014, 03:00:53 AM »
Our Twitter account got mentioned on the latest edition of The Game of Love Podcast (episode 5) as the two guys who feature on it have been holding the “Great Carcassonne Debate” for the last two episodes. Their debate is focussed on whether strategy/ tactics or luck play a bigger role in Carcassonne, and in response to a tweet that said “There can be no devious planning (nor any planning) in a game played one random tile at a time!” I pointed out that “There can be no winning if you play Carcassonne without a gameplan against someone who knows what they're doing!”

Anyway, I thought it might be helpful if we discussed this amongst ourselves a little so I thought I’d start this topic and then pass the link back to the guys who do the podcast. It’s well worth a listen and can be found here: http://gameoflovepodcast.com/ (episodes 4 and 5 will be of most interest, I haven’t listened to episode 4 but Carcassonne is discussed from about 23 minutes in episode 5).  :(y)

My personal feeling is that luck is certainly a significant factor in Carcassonne. Significant enough that nobody can ever be considered unbeatable and even a novice player could beat the world champion if all the right tiles came up. This isn’t simply about drawing city tiles or cloisters while your opponent draws roads, but is more to do with being able to complete features (whatever they may be) and ensuring that any attempt by your opponent to steal into anything of yours ends in failure for them (and preferably a trapped meeple too). Most of us have been on the receiving end of this, and when it feels like the tiles are against you, there really isn’t much you can do to keep yourself in the game...

However, luck alone can’t account for the fact that some people always seem to win! So although the tile drawing is random, my default gameplan is to get myself into the position that I can improve my overall standing (or make life difficult for my opponent) with whichever tile I draw. This isn’t always possible, but if I know that I can use 80% of the tiles left in the bag in my favour then I’m going to be pretty confident about my chances. If I can’t easily use a tile to generate points for myself then perhaps I can drop it somewhere near an opposing city, cloister, road (or maybe all three) in order to ensure that some/ all of these features can’t be completed? Trapping my opponent’s meeples is definitely one of my favourite tactics!  >:D

Two final points: firstly that the balance of luck becomes increasingly significant as the number of players increases. I prefer to play head-to-head and can take this relatively seriously. With 4 players or more it’s usually the case that pretty much anyone can win and it can be very difficult to feel like you have any control over the game. Secondly, that tile-counting can also be very helpful/ necessary if you’re playing competitively. Recognising when there are no more tiles of a certain configuration left is very handy if your opponent is holding out for a tile that no longer exists!  O:-)

I suspect this is something that’s been discussed before, but I’m really interested to hear what others have to say. Regardless of personal opinions about how good you may or may not be at Carcassonne in general, I’m sure that everyone here has something of interest and value to add!

Other Games / "irregularities" in Ticket to Ride world championship final
« on: November 10, 2014, 03:34:50 AM »
I’ve only played it a couple of times but I imagine many of us here will be familiar with "Ticket to Ride". Furthermore, I fully expect that some here will already be familiar with the controversy over this year’s Ticket to Ride world championship too; notably that the person who won it - Erwin Pauelsen - has had his title taken away from him in light of certain irregularities that came to light during the final game but which weren’t picked up by any of the officials at the time.

Even if you’re not into Ticket To Ride, as someone who is interested in top-level competition I found the following to be quite an interesting read in terms of what constitutes cheating and the insight gained into what goes on inside the heads of some of the most competitive board gamers in the world...

Press release from Days of Wonder regarding the Ticket to Ride world championship final:

Response from Erwin Pauelsen to above press release and subsequent accusations

Carcassonne Central News #4 - October 2014

Welcome
Hello and welcome to Carcassonne Central News #4; may the fourth (edition of Carcassonne Central News) be with you.

October has been another big month for Carcassonne, most significantly of all because of the Spiel festival in Essen where several new expansions, spin-off games and even an expansion for a spin-off game were released or re-released. There was Germany's national Carcassonne championship and the world Carcassonne championship to follow; the crown this year going to 19 year-old Takafumi Mochiduki from Japan. However, as someone who wasn't there to see any of this for myself, I think it's safe to say that the excitement of Essen has been mirrored pretty closely here on the forums with everything that's been going on lately. And we've got the posts to prove it!

Under Starter's Orders
True story (and one which my wife reminds me of unnecessarily frequently): I once knocked a game of Ludo on the floor because my opponents (my wife and her 8 year-old sister) were halfway round the board already and I hadn't even got a single person away from the start on account of not being able to roll a 6...

Don't let a dice that hates you ruin your board game fun though. Instead, try this: next time you play get everyone to take it in turns to draw a tile from your bag (or stack, or tower thing – whichever you prefer as long as it's random) then place it face-up in front of them. Keep doing this until someone is lucky enough to draw a cloister, and then let that person start as a reward (or eliminate them and repeat the process with the remaining players until only one player remains).

If you have an alternative method of choosing the start player that you'd like to share with the rest of the community, please let me know!

Forum News
News and Events\ Spiel 2014 at Essen
If like so many of us, you weren't able to get to the Spiel festival in Essen this year you'll be glad to know that most of what went on has been described or linked to from this post. It includes the experiences of some of those who visited along with details of the launches of brand new spin-off game Carcassonne Around the World #2: Gold Rush, Carcassonne 2.0 and several mini expansions that have been released or re-released through HiG and Spielbox. Oh and what else was there? Oh yeah, only the Carcassonne World Championships!

News and Events\ Carcassonne Central Twitter Account
If you're a Twitterer you may be interested to know that Carcassonne Central is now on Twitter too. Our Twitter account - @Carcassonne - features all things Carcassonne in terms of news, links and photos so please show your support by following us and helping to spread the word amongst anyone else you know who may be interested.

News and Events\ Dutch and Belgium Monasteries (De kloosters)
News and Events\ another new Mini-Expansion "Carcassonne - Darmstadt"
The Carcassonne completionists among us will recognise how frustrating it can be when certain new expansions are released in a limited way or are otherwise difficult to get hold of. Two recent examples of this are the Dutch/ Belgian Monasteries and the "Darmstadt" mini-expansions. However, thanks to the incredible efforts of several members of Carcassonne Central including SRBO, Khonnor, MrNumbers and kettlefish, many of us have been able to get our hands on these without having to sell any limbs in order to buy them through eBay!

News and Events\ Besiegers and Halflings II (and New Edition and Goldrush) now available at Cundco
There's not a lot I can say here that isn't already covered by the topic. Just to reiterate though, the 2nd (HiG) half of the "Halflings" expansion is now available to buy from www.cundco.de. As is the most recent Cathars\ Siege replacement "Die Belagerer", the German Monasteries, Carcassonne 2.0 (featuring all new artwork), Carcassonne Around the World #2: Gold Rush and it's expansion: "The Sheriff".

General\ Sale of fan-made expansions
If you ever see something for sale that doesn't look like an official expansion for Carcassonne, chances are that it probably isn't. Fan-made expansions are supposed to be free so that true fans of the game like us can enjoy playing them and even coming up with our own ideas. Trying to make money by selling these to others is illegal. Please don't support those who attempt to do this by giving them your money, but read this post for more information instead.

General\ Element(s) of the Week: The Princess, King & Robber Baron, The Tower, Big Followers and Abbeys
Whaleyland's "Element of the Week" series has continued throughout October. This month has seen discussion surrounding The Princess, King & Robber Baron, The Tower, The Big Followers (from Inns & Cathedrals) and Abbeys. So if you have an opinion on any of these (or would merely like to vote regarding how you use them) then please visit the appropriate link below:
General\ Carcassonne by Forums
If you get annoyed when your opponent takes several minutes deciding where to place their tile, just imagine how you'd feel if they took a day or two! Yet that's exactly how this 5-player game of Carcassonne is being played at the moment between Yellow, MrNumbers, SRBO, Rosco and danisthirty. Play commenced on the 1st October and whilst the game is still only half finished, it's starting to get pretty tense now so members of a nervous disposition may wish to avert their eyes!

Reviews & Session Reports\ My first game with Wheel of Fortune, ferries, schools and half and half
An interesting combination of expansions here seems to have made for an exciting game between quevy and his cousin with the final scores settling on 346 vs. 298 in quevy's favour. Well played!

Official Rules\ Clarification of rules - by meeting with HiG - 04 10 2014
As Carcassonne grows so does the number of potentially confusing scenarios that could arise where rules from various expansions seem to clash with each other and aren't easily resolved. Fortunately, our very own kettlefish is able to consult with "rule master" Georg Wild (HiG) from time to time in order to settle our disputes and further strengthen our Complete Annotated Rules. This post is the result of what they discussed when they met earlier this month.

Official Rules\ German Monasteries and Halflings interaction
With triangular Carcassonne tiles now hitting the tables of thousands of homes around the world, it was inevitable that questions would be asked regarding how these should be used with existing expansions. Several of these questions have been raised and answered here so if you're looking for three-sided answers, this is the best place to start looking...

CarcCentral Carcassonne League\ Upcoming Scheduled Games\ Weekly Online Game
Throughout October, a friendly online game of Carcassonne has been played every Thursday evening using a variety of different expansions. All players of all abilities are very welcome to join in, so if you're at a loose end at 9:30 (CET) on a Thursday evening and fancy chatting with fellow forum members while you steal their features and trap their meeples then this is your opportunity to do so!

The Workshop\ Crafters' Guild\ Homemade Tower
Draw them from a bag, a little stack on the table or a tower; how you draw your tiles is up to you. If you're feeling creative though (and have about two hours to spare), perhaps you'd like to build your own tile-drawing tower? New forum member Reggie777 may be able to help if this is the case...

Carcassonne Player's Guide #4: Head for the Hills! (brought to you by MrNumbers)
Welcome back to another Carcassonne tip from MrNumbers!

Today I will show you some secrets about the newest major expansion "Sheep and Hills" (specifically the Hills element). Everyone knows that Hills are used to break a tie in the event that no single player owns the majority of followers in the feature being scored, but this can also be exploted by certain techniques that allow you to steal a feature (using a hill) in just one move!

My intention isn't to discuss any of the obvious ways of doing this such as by using a magic portal, flier or wagon; the methods I've described are trickier and can be applied even when a feature is occupied (although technically, a flier could do this contrary to magic portals and wagons). Some of these have already been discussed in the forum, but others are new:

1. Plague. If you alone own a feature or share it with an opponent, you can "take flight" from the Plague to a tile with a Hill. Your opponent may attempt to do the same of course, so use the flea tokens to try to cut him off from that tile as soon as possible.

2. City of Carcassonne. When a feature is scored you can "parachute" from the City of Carcassonne to a tile with a Hill, breaking a tie with your opponent.

3. Ferries. Placing a Hill tile can trigger ferry switching and, as a result, you can switch a ferry to a road belonging to your opponent, winning ownership of that road in the process! The same technique can be applied when using Tunnels.

We haven't had this for a few months but October saw some fantastic Carcassonne-related photos posted on the forums and I couldn't bring myself to post this edition of the newsletter without including a selection of them:

Member of the Month
If you don't like waiting months on end for all the latest Carcassonne expansions and spin-offs to be released in your own country, you may have found yourself ordering stuff with rules in a foreign language from time to time. I studied German in school but the only two words I can remember now are "hausaufgaben" (homework) and "berichtigung" (corrections) which seems rather fitting considering how much I struggled with it. So far though, neither of these words have come up in any of the German expansion rules I've tried to read so it's helpful to know that there are plenty of people on these forums who are only too happy to translate rules from one language to another without losing any of the original meaning. One person who has been doing this a lot lately is our newest Member of the Month: wamboyil! See below for a list of his works this month:
So, many thanks for all your hard work on behalf of the entire English-speaking community here at Carcassonne Central. It is very much appreciated! :(y)

Carcassonne Knowledge Tester (CKT) #4: What a mess!

Welcome to another Carcassonne Knowledge Tester. Before moving on to this month's question, let's have another quick look at the question I posed last month where I asked you to decide who had won a certain city, and how many points it was worth:

I included a couple of tricks in this one which weren't especially obvious from the photo (this wasn't deliberate). So I'll start by going through each figure and the effect they have on the final outcome:
  • 1. This is a normal follower placed in the city. It counts as one knight for Blue.
  • 2. This is a builder. It doesn't count towards ownership of the city.
  • 3. This is a phantom. It counts as one knight for Blue regardless of the fact that it represents someone who is dead.
  • 4. This is a large follower. It counts as two knights for Blue.
  • 5. This is a mayor. It counts for as many knights as there are pennants in the city (see below) for Red.
  • 6. This is a normal follower. However it is not in the city, it is on the cloister contained within the city and so doesn't count towards ownership of the city (I tried to make this obvious but it was difficult to show that the cloister was there and that the monk was on it).
So the matter of who wins the city comes down to the number of pennants it contains. Four are shown in the picture, but one of them is part of a separate city so Blue wins it by four knights to three. Well done Blue! But how many points does he win? Well, the city consists of 18 tiles and 3 pennants so would normally be worth 42 points. But there are a few other things to take into consideration:
  • The presence of a Cathars tile
  • The presence of a Siege tile (from Cult, Siege & Creativity)
  • The presence of a Belagerers tile
  • The presence of a Cathedral
  • The presence of the Witch (the orange figure)
The effect of there being tiles from Cathars, Siege and Belagerers isn't cumulative which means that the value of each city tile/ pennant is reduced by one point (from 2 to 1). This however is countered by the effect of the Cathedral which increases the value of each city tile/ pennant back up to 2. Finally, the witch halves the value of the city meaning that rather than being worth 42 points, it is worth 21.

Finally, the fact that the Fairy (the white figure) is standing on the same tile as Red's mayor means that he gets 3 points outright simply for this, regardless of who won the city. In light of this, the full outcome of Blue's tile is threefold:
  • 21 points for Blue :blue-meeple: :D
  • 3 points for Red :red-meeple: :'(
  • 2 Barrel, 2 Cloth and 2 Wheat tokens for Blue for closing the city :(y)
Congratulations to gmartinscott and Vital Pluymers for arriving at the same conclusion as I did! I hope this goes to show that insulting your opponent's family is rarely a winning strategy in Carcassonne...

"No it's OK, we'll be fine"
"What? Are you sure?"
"Yeah, we've got the rules and everything"
"But you're using Abbey & Mayor"
"I know, and it all looks perfectly self-explanatory..."
"...and Bridges, Castle and Bazaars?"
"We can work it out as we go!"
"The fact that you're saying that leads me to believe that you have no idea what you're getting yourselves into!"
"Leave us alone Dad!"
"Fine then. But if you forget to take a photo at the end of the game, you're living in the shed for the rest of the month..."

(10 minutes later)

"Dad! Dad! Can you come and help us with something?"

Ha! You knew this would happen. But you weren't expecting this:

It's carnage! Where do you even begin? It's tough I know, but being a dad (or a mum) comes with its responsibilities and making sure everyone sticks to the rules properly during games of Carcassonne is right up there with the most important of them. In order to demonstrate this, please point out as many mistakes and/or illegal placements of tiles/ followers/ other as you can see in the picture above. Do it for the kids, and PM me with your answer. Good luck!

Forum Statistics
I've been keeping a very close eye on the stats this month as we've been smashing records left, right and centre lately. And I'm happy to report that despite the site being down for a full day on the 7th October, this trend has continued again this month with a phenomenally busy October:

98 new topics: new record!  :)
2015 new posts: another new record!  :D
84 new members: most since last month (88)
48 members simultaneously online: not as high as last month (51) but still our second-highest month ever
229,146 page views: yet another new record!  ;D

The Last Tile
This month saw the 30th birthday of Moritz Brunnhofer from HiG; best wishes from all at Carcassonne Central! And congratulations to thegreatone3182 and his wife who have now scored over 100,000 points between them in 128 games. If like me you're wondering how they can possibly have achieved an average score of almost 400 points per player per game in order to accomplish this, it may help you to know that their most recent game included almost 20 expansions and took 3.5 hours to play! (read more about that here)

I hope you've found this to be an interesting read and have enjoyed the overall content. If you have any comments or suggestions, don't keep them to yourself! Please play your role in helping to shape future editions of the newsletter by letting me know how you feel about what you've just read. Your feedback is very much appreciated!

Reviews & Session Reports / First game with new artwork
« on: November 02, 2014, 03:16:56 PM »
So, my wife and I had our first game of Carcassonne using the new ("2.0") artwork this evening.

It wasn't exactly a classic game, and we didn't use the river either, but I wanted to share the photo below all the same:

The new artwork is definitely growing on me, and I'm not just saying that because I won (despite losing the big city by 2 blue knights against 3 red knights)!

Final scores were  :blue-meeple: 129 - 107  :red-meeple: (in my favour - my farmers made all the difference).

General / Sale of Fan-Made Expansions
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:46:41 AM »
For the benefit of any new members of the community, or those who aren’t already aware of the situation regarding the sale of fan-made Carcassonne expansions, some of the Global Moderators/ Admins thought it might be helpful to explain the legal arrangement that we have in place with HiG in order to protect both CarcassonneCentral and everyone’s intellectual property. Please read it and bear this in mind whenever you’re browsing eBay or wherever in search of new Carcassonne stuff:

CarcassonneCentral's arrangement with German publishing company “Hans im Glück” (who effectively own the game Carcassonne) allows us to use original Carcassonne tile designs as a base/ template for producing the artwork for our own fan-made expansions. Furthermore, these fan-made expansions are allowed to be made available via our downloads section which entitles anyone who is a member here to download any number of fan-made expansions including printable tiles and rules explaining how to use them for free.

What this doesn’t allow is for people to download fan-made expansions from CarcassonneCentral and then try to sell them on eBay or any other online auction site. In fact, you’re not allowed to sell them at all; nobody is (not even the people who made them) and no such sale will ever be endorsed or allowed by CarcassonneCentral. The impressive collection of free fan-made expansions available on CarcassonneCentral is only possible because a great many talented people have worked very hard to produce them, and I hope you’ll be just as disgusted by the idea that anyone should be trying to make money from their efforts as I am. Unfortunately though, it happens...

The sale of anything “unofficial” that uses original Carcassonne artwork or any CarcassonneCentral branding (the name, logo, any reference to the CAR etc) is illegal, as is the sale of any of our fan-made expansions. If you see anything like this available, don’t buy it! Please alert any of the Administrators or Global Moderators of this site and include a link to the sale if possible so that the appropriate action can be taken. Please also note that you may encounter unofficial figures, tokens and other artefacts which may be advertised as being for use with Carcassonne. Whilst these may not be illegal as such, buy cautiously if you don’t know exactly what you're buying!

In addition to the above, if you are the designer/ creator of your own fan-made Carcassonne expansion (or are thinking about becoming one), please read the additional notes included in the following post before you embark on your project: Legal Notice from Hans-im-Glueck Spielverlag.

Any questions, please ask!  :)

News and Events / Carcassonne Central Twitter Account
« on: October 27, 2014, 09:33:50 AM »
You may have noticed on the front page that there is now a link to the official Carcassonne Central Twitter “feed” (or you might not have done, so I’m pointing it out now just in case). I took it upon myself to get this up and running just over a week ago so I wanted to mention it here.

Firstly, I must admit that I’m not the biggest fan of Twitter. This is mostly because I'm turned off by the fact that the majority of the people who frequent it seem to be either celebrity-obsessed stalkers, trolls or cyber-bullies. Where else could every footballer ever have literally millions of followers hanging on their every word? I didn’t think it was for me at all...

However, once I got a little bit more familiar with it I realised that there is a wealth of Carcassonne information and photos on Twitter, so I’ve taken it upon myself to attempt to use it for two main purposes:

1. To spread the word about Carcassonne Central and to help people who are already playing Carcassonne to find us and become part of the community here.

2. To make the Carcassonne Central Twitter feed a popular hub for Carcassonne news, tips, links, photos, videos and anything else I can find.

I won’t go into detail about how I’m hoping to achieve either of these but if anyone here is on Twitter and isn’t already doing so, please follow the Carcassonne Central feed - @Carcassonne - and encourage anyone else who may be interested to do the same.

Thanks!  :)

EDIT: Anyone can view the page here: https://twitter.com/Carcassonne

General / Secret Santa
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:53:26 PM »
I know it's early yet, but with two young kids at home Christmas is something we talk about daily! As such, I was wondering if anybody here would be interested in taking part in a "Secret Santa"?

For the uninitiated, a Secret Santa involves everyone who is taking part sending and receiving one present (in this context I'm guessing most presents will be Carcassonne related but it shouldn't necessarily be limited to this). Nobody knows who their present is from though, hence the "secret" part.

The way I see it working is that anyone who wanted to be part of it would sign up here and then send me a PM with their postal address. Once all interested parties are on board I will draw names at random and forward on the name and address of another forum member to each person. Each person then buys a gift for that person and sends it to them. Like I said earlier, gifts can be Carcassonne related but don't have to be if this is too restrictive.

There would usually be a limit on the amount that should be spent on the gift and this would have to include postage as well. I don't know what most people would feel to be an appropriate limit but my feeling is that around £10 would be about right, although obviously I'm prepared to adjust this up or down depending on what people think. I don't want anyone to feel that this is too expensive, but at the same time, the quality of the gifts sent/ received could be very limited if the price is set too low.

Any thoughts? I would anticipate all gifts being sent by the end of November at the latest so hopefully we should all have a nice surprise to unwrap on Christmas day!
