Title: Carcassonne by Forums
Post by: danisthirty on September 29, 2014, 08:18:40 AM
I would like to propose a brave and highly experimental method for a game of Carcassonne that can be played directly on the forums over the coming days/ weeks. It is open to anyone to take part and doesn't even require JCloisterZone:

- It will be played using the base game only
- It will be played as a 4-player game between Blue, Red, Green and Yellow
- Each time a turn is taken, the final layout must be photographed as clearly as possible and posted here so that all other players can see what tile you drew, where you placed it and whether you deployed a meeple
- The next person to play must construct the layout as per the most recent photo, place all remaining tiles in a bag and draw one at random. He/ she then draws a tile at random, takes his/ her turn, takes a photo of the resulting layout and posts it back to the forum
- We continue in this way until the game has been completed

There are some obvious drawbacks:
- It could take a very long time to complete (two months if only one turn per day takes place)
- It relies heavily on players drawing their tiles at random and not cheating by picking the tile they need
- It also relies on players having to rebuild the board each time they place a tile which could be a bit of a pain

In light of the above, please apply to take part only if...
...you’re active within the forums and will be able to respond in a timely way when it’s your turn.
...you’re prepared to take it seriously and will respect your fellow opponents by drawing your tiles at random
...you have sufficient table space to leave this out as an ongoing game for 2 weeks or more, or are prepared to rebuild it each time you take a turn

Also, although this probably won’t be a problem for most people, don’t forget you’ll need access to a decent camera to photograph your turns. If you’re technically proficient enough to reduce the size of your image such that you can post it as an attachment, or can host it elsewhere and post a link then this would be very helpful.

If you’re interested, please post a response below, along with your colour preference. If there is sufficient interest we can consider doing this as teams of two (per colour) although this would mean we only get to place one in eight tiles each.

Seating order will be determined by order of response here (assuming we get at least 3 responses). Starting player will be picked at random (by me).

I call Blue!  :blue-meeple:

why not make multiple games?
Title: Re: Carcassonne by Forums
Post by: danisthirty on September 29, 2014, 11:02:15 PM
We'll play as a 5 if nobody else wants to join in (assuming everyone else is happy with this?).

Otherwise we can either play as teams (take alternate turns, no more than 2 players per team) or split into 2 games.

While this is still a proof of concept as much as anything else I'd prefer to keep things as simple as possible. Once we know if it's fun/ worthwhile/ practical etc we can decide about future games played this way to include expansions etc.

Any other takers?
Title: Re: Carcassonne by Forums

OK so we'll stick to the 5 of us then.

Play order:

1.  :blue-meeple: (danisthirty)
2.  :meeple: (Yellow)
3.  :red-meeple: (MrNumbers)
4.  :green-meeple: (SRBO)
5.  :black-meeple: (Rosco)

Starting player (picked via random number generation at http://www.random.org/):

2

So Yellow gets to go first. Then MrNumbers, then SRBO, then Rosco, then me, then Yellow again and so on...

Here's the landscape as it looks at the start of Yellow's turn:

It is now up to Yellow to draw a tile at random, place it, deploy a meeple if he chooses to do so, take a photo of the outcome and post it back to this thread. Hopefully this all makes sense.

If your turn generates points for anyone, please keep the scores up to date as we go. Obviously we're all on 0 at the moment!

Good luck everyone, and enjoy the game!

Only the normal base game right?

Right.

Expansions can potentially be included in future games, but first I want to know if playing in this way will actually work out OK!

I totally want to see a game played with the Catapult PBF. That would be amazingly interesting. No cheating!

I’m hoping to create a stop-motion animation of the game progressing once it’s finished. If the catapult were included and players were willing to film themselves firing it (or more particularly, the effect of this on the game), the footage could be included where appropriate in the final video which would become an interesting mix of stop-motion and live video!

Maybe next time. I’ll have to get the catapult first though...  :-\

I really ought to invest in The Catapult some day, it sounds hilarious!

I wouldn't be surprised if a game with 200 tiles or more took a full year to complete. Losing a big city or some other valuable feature in a game like that could be majorly upsetting!

“Yellow refuses to show his tile to anyone else and continues to consider his options, stroking his chin and humming quietly to himself as he does so. The other players glance at each other cautiously, each of them wondering what tile he has drawn and why it is taking so long to place it...”

This is already starting to feel like a proper game!  >:D

With suspense I've been following the game after the starter tile was placed. Such a long way home and with no means of getting off sooner it was eating me from the inside.
The last few hours at work just became an unfocused mess for survival. An old friend, whom I've not talked to for six months, called me out of the blue on my mobile phone which was a fun surprise and it took my mind off everything else.

I'm finally home, but so much to be done! I have like 1 500 tiles unsorted and to sort out one single copy of the base game will take time. There's no space made for the board either. I just hope I can manage my move before Midnight so I can sleep with ease.

I think it's important to keep everything in one thread, to build a timeline which is easier to keep track of. Those of us involved in the game I would presume be available to check the thread at least once a week to be able to catch up with the posts.
Hopefully people can  skip the threads posts without images if they just want to focus on the board!  ^-^

Player turn: Yellow
Player name: Yellow
Tile placed: (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/10k/tiles2/17.jpg)
Scored: 4 points from a 2-tile city.

Current board:

And here is a video of my draw, which I must apologise for the quality because I was filming in a cramped space. Although the tile barely is visible, the one I drew, you can verify it that instant I picked it up and flipped it over if you pause at 45 seconds:

Another idea to speed your game along might be that once a player has finished his/her turn, that player sends a private message to the next player so that player is notified that it's their turn.

This is a great idea!

I can forehand let you guys know I check in daily at least a billion times.  ;D Mostly as a guest because I only post replies when I am at home.

@Yellow - were you shuffling those tile or caressing them? It looks like you were enjoying it far more than was strictly necessary to me...  :-*

With regards to the PMs these won't be necessary in my case as I will get notified by email whenever anyone posts any new messages on this thread. My phone is never far away (while I'm awake) so I should always be able to respond promptly.

Also, I don't mean to be unnecessarily pedantic, but if possible please take photos from above and make your photos of just the playing area/ landscape as it develops. The reason for this is that I'd like to create some sort of time-lapse project of the game once it's finished so consistency is relatively important for this purpose.

So anyway, it looks like Yellow is developing an early lead. How very telling!  >:D

Isn't it going to look weird with all the different tile versions, lighting and tables?  :@

I can do an uppety shot next time, no trouble. In my defence, I did mail you I put up everything in haste so you guys don't have to wait a whole extra day for my move.  :meeple:

As for my caresscasonne, I treat my last tile as my first tile, with care!  :) But I did see the clip afterwards and it did feel a bit awkard. Figure I upload this instead of drawing a new tile, which would have been unfair.

@danisthirty:
For a good time-lapse project you have to take all photos by yourself, I think.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to take my own photos for the time-lapse as suggested by Fritz_Spinne. I will have to build the landscape anyway in order to place my tiles so it’s not like it’s a lot of extra work, and I think the end result would be better if I did it this way anyway as the photos (and tiles) would be more consistent. Plus of course it doesn’t mean imposing any strict criteria on how photos need to be presented here which is a significant benefit too.

OK then. Please disregard my previous comment regarding how photos should be taken. As long as it’s clear what tile you’ve drawn, where it’s been placed and whether you’ve placed a meeple that should be good enough.

Over to you MrNumbers...

I think a running points tally would be a good idea too. Just copy/paste it in each entry from the previous one. Then we can all see who's winning.

I had a couple of options with this one. Not sure how much of our strategies we want to divulge, but I was really torn between doing this and adding it to the west side of Red's city with a city side facing north such that a cccr tile would be required above it before Red's city and Black's road could be completed. In the end I decided it probably wasn't worth it and started my own city instead.

Over to you Yellow!  :meeple:

Anyway, you may also notice that I put the Yellow meeple on the wrong tile and then couldn't be bothered to move it and take another picture. I did hire a team of Image Manipulation Specialist Engineers to fix the problem though, and I'm quite impressed with the work they've done...

I had some great plans depending on what piece I drew next. Sadly there wasn't really much I could think of to do with this piece though so I'm just playing my own little game in the corner. I might come back and play with the rest of you guys if I start drawing some useful tiles...

Aww. Thank you!  ^-^ I did not have enough bridges to make the full name, but I know I will buy at least 3 more of this expansion very soon.  :(y)

The figures around the board are made of Plus-Plus. Never seen it before until 2 days ago. I was in a store when out of town looking for Carcassonne items. Sadly he had only the base game with too steep of a price. Still, I felt a bit guilty as me and the store manager had a long conversation being social and all, so I bought 2 small Plus-Plus sets for 6 Euro (total).  8)

OK so the way I see it we have three options:

1- Create a special icon with a large “R” symbol in the middle of it which we put in an obvious place on the Carcassonne Central front page so that Rosco knows when it’s his turn here (this would be kind of like how Gotham City has a special beacon with the bat symbol for whenever they need Batman).

2- We all change our forum signatures simply to “ROSCO'S TURN” in bold, 36-point font

3- I use my special powers to change his password, log on as him and take his turn for him. This may bias the game somewhat in my favour, but probably not enough that I’d win it...

Any other ideas?  >:D

I could make page on my server so you guys could copy and paste it and just fill in the blanks such as:

Who's turn it was and who's next is
Which tile, short description. Ex. cccc tile or cloister northeast of the board etc
Preset with all the meeple counts and you would delete those already put in place.
Scoring. I could update the page every evening.

Let me know if this would work or any other ideas to make this pre-made page easier!  :(y)

It was starting to take so long to set the game up before taking my turn that I’ve had to set it up permanently on the spare table in the garage. Hence why the light isn’t very good, and there wasn’t enough headroom to get a decent photo either. But anyway, here’s my turn:

Sounds about right:

5 x 5 = 25 + 1 starter tile + 1 discarded cccc tile = 27 tiles

72 - 27 = 45 tiles left in the bag = 9 tiles left to play each!

Thanks jungleboy! Glad you enjoyed it.

I thought Carcassonne 2.0 was going to be more widely available after Essen was over, so I was half expecting to see it on Cundco at the same time as the other new things. Die Belagerer and Half and Half are now available, but that appears to be all for now.

Maybe I'll have to source it from German eBay as long as it's not too expensive. Same with Gold Rush.

Well spotted Tobias, thanks for that! I think it was my fault that it got removed although it's almost invisible in Rosco's picture. It's all a bit Chinese Whispers!

There should be a yellow meeple on the unfinished city, right?

I knew something was off with that city, but just couldn't place it. (No pun intended.)

Going back a few images, you are absolutely right! There should be a yellow token (I mean follower / meeple) on it.

And the tile next to the 8 point city with the green meeple on it should be a CRRR tile

Since we are officially working together for our shared city, I started to close it, claiming another city.
Hope, now everything is right on our board :)

Glad you enjoyed it Scott! Finding all the right tiles and putting them in place took me about 20 minutes so I'm probably going to be sticking to the winter edition tiles from now on...

Also, I'm impressed that you're still reading all new posts on your increasingly frequent ( :(y)) visits back to the site, even though we're averaging 60 - 70 posts a day now!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed your holiday SRBO, but now it's time to get serious and make your move!  :(y) :green-meeple: :(y) <--- these are hands placing a green meeple

To be fair, that meeple is bigger than a hand so it probably weighs a fair bit more than your average meeple!

I was waiting to make a move like this! not the one i prefer but i hope this will also do the job!
I drew a CRFR-tile. and sadly i didnt put it down for my own benefit.
now i made a gap and ive looked into the pile if the gap is still available.
Yes,
1 tile.

so.. dear yellow and black, i hope you draw this tile:)

Cheers ;)  :green-meeple:

Wow. That was harsh! I was leaving this open as I had no problem with Yellow taking the road for himself. It doesn't change how many points he'd win for the road, it just means that Rosco is now guaranteed a share of the points as well so this keeps him in the game...

so.. dear yellow and black, i hope you draw this tile:)

You forgot to add red and blue to this list since this has also blocked our city! Let's go  :meeple: :black-meeple: :red-meeple: :blue-meeple:  >:D

That is his whole point. He doesn't want red or blue to draw the right tile because he doesn't want your city to get completed. He wants yellow or black (or himself) to draw the CRRR tile instead.

I think if I was Yellow or Rosco and I drew the remaining crrr tile I would still place it there for the sake of completing the road and getting a meeple back (or the potential of 2 in Yellow's case)...

But if keeping the city incomplete is the point of this move (rather than to prevent road sharing stealing which is what I saw) then this is certainly a good one. Personally I would have rotated the tile through 180 degrees and placed it 3 places to the right as there are only 2 3-sided city tiles left and there would still be plenty of open sides.

We're halfway through the game now and it hasn't been very roady so far so I'm hopeful that the farms will be joined. In any case, your farmer serving 3 cities is very well placed at the moment. I would be surprised if the shared farm ends up being worth more than yours...

MrNumbers' photos are usually the best benchmark to go by but I think this is right as far as I can tell...

Also, SRBO's only non-farming meeple (on the T-junction next to Rosco's 8-point city) is almost invisible.

Token placed: Farmer

Youve made a big mistake rosco :(

You think? This is the best thing he could have done to boost the value of a currently worthless farmer by 9 points (possibly 12 or more). What's more the tile he needs to join the farm is being sought by 2 players (me and him) and there is no way of blocking it as it's surrounded.

I'd say that's an excellent move!  :(y)

I'm not taking it too seriously; anything can indeed happen, especially when it's a 5-player game!

Yellow is trying to get on the farm now already with 2 meeples. with the city you and dan almost share you can simply add a farmer to that field. Im sure every next person will try to do this except for mister numbers because he needs that tile to keep dan out of the big city.

At this moment of the game the farmers are the most valuable followers in this game. So its gonna be a hard race now haha

A little road trick :)
Title: Re: Carcassonne by Forums
Post by: danisthirty on October 31, 2014, 03:22:56 PM
With both fffr tiles gone, Yellow will have to work very hard indeed to get either of his two adjacent farmers onto the field currently occupied by Green. There is now a very easy way on to this farm which we've all spotted, but I don't see why this is an advantage to Yellow in particular?

I would have loved to have made the most of this for myself but there wasn't much I could do with the frrr tile I drew other than join my farmer (and MrNumbers' farmer) onto a shared farm with Yellow and claim 2 points for the road in the process.

Anyway, here goes, enjoy the photo:

And one of the new score track, with scores represented by the new Abbot meeples:

I can only guess that this explains why Z-Man hasn't released the version yet. Or have they? I find it funny that they advertise better and more clear rules with this expansion, yet they already botched that. When kettlefish criticizes Hans im Glück, you KNOW something's wrong. I don't like the scoreboard either. The tiles are okay, but the scoreboard looks too basic and boring.

Do you know if the Abbot meeples will be available separately from HiG?

Post by: Paul on October 31, 2014, 04:32:29 PM
The scoreboard for 2.0 looks OK. Can't say I ever paid attention to any version of it.
However, they should know by now that the game, even if just the base one, needs a larger score count tracker, rather than having us rely on extra score tiles and whatnot.

It's my turn is it? Maybe I'll wait a few days, see what else you can come up with, for my next move.

I planted that last tile in hope of getting the cloister with a road and following two player turns were just those. This pretty much ruins any chance I have getting in on the farm action.

Sorry to cause any confusion but...

...the thief I placed on my last turn was a quick deploy and reclaim for 2 points for the road. I wasn't claiming the open road. I left my meeple down to show that I'd claimed the road, but he has been moved southwards by one tile in subsequent pictures. Hopefully this can be seen from the pictures.

In light of this, I imagine Yellow will want to adjust his move to take the 3-point road rather than the 2-point although it doesn't make any difference to MrNumbers' go...

Confusion indeed. I will take the 3 point road by turning my junction tile 180 degree so the roads connects west (3 points for me), east and south.

I drew an CRRF tile, couldn't do anything special, i had a little doubt to connect it to 1 of the 2 unclaimed cities. but later decided to expand my field.

its on the left side

Also here are the last tiles that are not yet drawn. You can see lots of roadpieces!

FFRR tile placed above my cloister completed the cloister and a 7-tile road belonging to SRBO and I.

So: 7 points for SRBO  :green-meeple: :), 16 points for me  :blue-meeple: ;D

I appreciate that this probably won't be a very popular choice but I went with it anyway mostly because I needed the meeples back. I'm only too well aware that my being catapulted unexpectedly into the lead is very much a temporary thing, but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts...

Yeah, and I gave 3 of them back to you for the farm!

The game is getting very exciting now. I don't have any kind of feeling for how things are going to end up yet, but there's too much luck involved in a game with this many players for me to take it too seriously which is kind of nice in a way...

Hi guys.

Sorry I did not have time to make my move yesterday. Crazy day all sort of non-Carcassonne related had me free almost at 2am which is where I directly went to bed, from having been woken up at 6am with almost no free time at all the whold time. Zzzz...

... but later today I'll give it another go!  :(y)

UPDATE: Doing my move tomorrow. I just don't have room to set the game up at the moment as it's too late in the evening don't want to wake anyone up.
Tomorrow I took the day off to catch up on things not work releated so I can get things done, which includes this move.

Guys,

I think we have a problem here!
Yellow is trying to tell us that the robbers stole his collection.
But he cannot say it because he is under the spell of the witch.
So he send his messenger to let us get some besiegers to help him out.

Ofcourse we need permission from the count. Because im not sure if he can spare some knights..

So.. what can we do?

Well, he probably hadn't counted all the cities to see how many points the King tile would be worth but assumed it would be around 20. At that stage of the game I imagine he was somewhat blinded by the fact that Rosco had almost double his score and was keen to do anything that would generate points for himself whilst taking them away from Rosco.

The city that you shared with B1nder would have been worth 15 points incomplete but you ended up getting 32 for it so he gave you both 17 points but wouldn't have been fussed about these going to B1nder as he hadn't placed his barn and so wasn't really in it as far as he was concerned. Since he saw the King tile as being worth more than 17 points, he assumed this would close the gap on both Rosco and yourself, and even took an extra 3 points for farming outside the newly completed city as a little bonus.

I think what he had perhaps underestimated was just how many points you won from your monasteries (even though he won a similar amount for himself). So, I think his approach made sense at the time, it's just unfortunate that Rosco's almost guaranteed victory fell victim to it. Sorry Rosco.

Even a day off deserves a lunch break and it was then I made my move.

But first, the sort of easter egg from my last move (turn 9). Seems no one noticed it but all the followers were Big Followers.  8)

Here goes, I posted two images because using the Phantom during the daylight was not the best idea.

Round: 10
Player: Yellow
Colour: Certainly not orange
Tile drawn: Yet another darned road, RRGG
Claimed: Road, cornerbottom right.
Player score: None (by any player)

So just added a tile to my cloister and made life little bit difficult for Rosco :P
BTW, his city has pennant, it is hidden behind his follower.

I drew a lucky tile. a CCCR tile with pennant.
After i put it down and took a picture i figured that it was a tile that would make my right farmer usefull.. but well.. i never knew that those cities wherent that easily closed.

I had 3 followers left. so i put down a farmer on it, to hopefully get some extra points out of it.

Annoyingly I have drawn a cloister which I really can’t do anything particularly interesting with at this stage of the game. I claimed it anyway as I have meeples in hand, and have dumped it up in “cloister corner” in the north-west corner of the map.

Because my move was such a dull one, I decided to take a leaf out of Yellow’s book and have livened things up a bit by hiding an Easter egg somewhere in the picture! See if you can spot it:

It's just, as usual, crazy here at work atm and last night I went to bed at 4am. It doesn't help I have to get up in 4 hours after that and work all day to Midnight again.  :o
Also, I have a study course I need to attend late in the evening as well.

I do have, however, Carcassonne nearby if I get a chance to make it. Or at least, I can draw the tile and photoshop it in from the latest image by Dan.  ;D

This is my fault, actually ::)
As an excuse I can tell that that big phantom box was VERY big and overlapped the tile. Now, after closer look, I can see a curved road.

How did I pick a random tile??

I have all the tiles already placed and the CCCC tile set aside. I just don't have any room to build up the board. Instead, I drew from the tiles still not drawn and took a picture of it.

I'm not sure I believe you, I need to see video evidence of you caressing those tiles again.  :))

So Yellow's road on the east side of the map should be curved and pointing upwards rather than straight (east-west). Also, Rosco shouldn't have a pennant on the ccff tile he place in the south-east corner. Also, although it is there (but isn't visible in this photo), SRBO's 3-sided city tile has a road leading out of it. He and Rosco have included this, as have I, but it can't be seen because of the angle I took the photo from and the farmer in front of it. Hopefully that makes sense. Oh, and although Yellow tried to claim the Kinder egg he doesn't have anything to claim it with (no meeples) so that's still unclaimed...  ::)

Round: 12
Player: Yellow
Colour: Yellow
Tile drawn: Cloister without road
Score: None (by any player)

Well, not exactly a useless tile, but it would have been nice had I follower to use on it.  :-\

No, it's the same. Used the kitchen table for a change, much closer to the computer. Not fluffy like BabyGamer's floormat but it does the trick.  :)

This is a table cloth for miniature gaming which I bought some 6-7 years ago for about 30 Euro.

MrNumbers' turn?
Title: Re: Carcassonne by Forums
Post by: MrNumbers on November 20, 2014, 10:30:54 AM
Yes, it's my turn indeed :)

My tile is CCFF with pennant. I had two options: add it to my city (with Klaus signature) and wait for a city tile to complete it, or I could complete my and Rosco's city and gain 10 points each. I went the second way, because I wanted to free at least one follower.
Bonus: can someone spot an easter egg? ;) It's quite simple one.

It was nevertheless a good move by him, wasn't it? Putting the tile in it's "appropriate" area would just benefit him an extra point for his robber plus getting him back, what is not that big a deal with only two more tiles to place and still one follower in reserve. On the other side, two robbers from Yellow are also blocked, and he has everybody on the board.

I don't really have much interest in that city now either. Since I've spent most of the game trying to get my second knight into it, and failing to draw the required tile, now it seems very unlikely that I'll join it so I'd probably rather it stays closed.

Absolutely. I had it lit like this to reflect my mood regarding how this game is going for me...  :'(

Also, my phone has been somewhat overworked today and didn't have enough battery left to take a photo with the flash on when this was taken. Hence that the picture is quite dark as the game is setup in the corner of my garage (which is becoming increasingly difficult to access but that's another matter)

I think so. There's only 2-3 tiles left each to draw. Maybe last tile layed during Midnight into 2015.  :@

Yesterday I was not free until 2 am, at which I decided, or rather my body did, to crash into bed. Can only hope today is less work.

Going to dive into work and things starting in a few mins and will not be free until tomorrow afternoon. During which I won't be able to pop in here or do my move.

But, when I do my move, tomorrow evening, there will be something fun in the picture as I often done before.

A suggestion to streamline the playing of the game.

Requirements
A text table with a 20 X 20 playing surface grid  ( recommend using Apache Open Office as it is free and will work)

A PDF with the tile images for the base game showing a number code for each tile and 4 rotated versions of the tile graphic.

A PDF with meeple graphics

A spreadsheet showing the numbered tiles in a random draw sequence

Process

each player has a copy of the the documents.

Game organizer sends out the spreadsheet with the tile draw sequence for the new game.

Each player in turn selects the tile number from the tile master PDF, copies the image and pastes it to the document.

Player can then select a meeple image from the meeple PDF and paste it onto the document

Player can then email the document or just state which tile and orientation he used and what square on the playing grid he placed it and what meeple if any was placed on the tile.

This way you could play multiple games at the same time saving each game under a different document name

I can send the first draft of the components to anyone who is interested or I can post it on the forum

I think that sounds very good but way too time consuming for me. I do not have time to do all that.  With the way we do it, it takes 2 minutes to add the extra tiles and meeples, draw your tile and lay your tile and meeple. It does require a spare base set to do it my way but I would struggle to take part any other way.

The problem is I do not have space any longer. I did at first when we started playing but then had to reorganize the apartment.
It all depends on how fast I can sell my LEGO which has been seeing increasing sale lately.

I have the tiles tucked away in sequence so shouldn't take long.

Not yet. The quality of the photos posted has been too inconsistent to do anything useful with, but once the game is finished it won't be a big job to go through reconstructing it tile by tile and taking a photo each turn. I've got a few ideas about what I might do then, but I don't think anything's going to be finished this year!

My turn then, hopefully later today. It's just another manic monday... Swamped with all kind of work.

I'm thinking of buying one of those puzzle mats so you can roll it in with Carcassonne and then roll it out again when it's time to do your move. Only then would be placing the followers. I think there was a thread about this somewhere and the result was remarkably well.

15 Euro, sounds like a good investment. If nothing else, I love puzzles and want to ante up my 13k pieces with the new one of 36k (36 thousands) pieces coming soon or may be out yet.

Game update so far:

Features:
Completed cities: 8
Completed roads: 7 (1 unclaimed)
Completed cloisters: 1

Score breakdown:
 :blue-meeple: danisthirty: 26 (2-tile road, 2-tile city, 7-tile road, cloister, 2-tile city)
 :green-meeple: SRBO: 22 (3-tile city with pennant, 2-tile city, 7-tile road, 3-tile road)
 :black-meeple: Rosco: 21 (4-tile city, 4-tile city with pennant, 3-tile road)
 :red-meeple: MrNumbers: 14 (2-tile city, 4-tile city with pennant)
 :meeple: Yellow: 10 (2-tile city, 3-tile road, 3-tile road)

Has anyone else been keeping the scores? Hopefully the breakdown above is accurate but I'd appreciate if someone else could validate this!

PS - this is only for completed features, final scoring will be done after the final tile has been placed

Just wondering

If Red player places a tile that completes a city for Red and a road for Blue and a cloister for Green who's responsibility is it to claim the points and at what point in whose turn would each player remove their meeple and claim the points?
Title: Re: Carcassonne by Forums
Post by: Whaleyland on December 02, 2014, 09:40:26 PM
It rarely matters. Officially, each player is responsible for their own points. There is no scorekeeper. The points are scored simultaneously, unless it truly matters, in which case it is scored in turn order beginning with the player whose turn it is. Followers are removed when they are scored. Scoring is usually the very last thing that occurs in a turn.

I don't see:
a) Blue's road;
b) Green's cloister;
c) opportunity to finish my (our) big city in one turn.

EDIT: OK, I got it, it was just hypothetical situation :))

@Yellow - would it help if I assigned a random number (1 - 5) to each of the remaining tiles (I can share this with someone else so that it can be verified) and then let you pick a number to draw your tile? You won't need to recreate the landscape then, and can just photoshop the tile onto the last photo...

Don't know what happened. Been swamped with work for the last two weeks I thought I never would see the light again.

About an hour ago, it all changed. Suddenly, I had nothing to do.  :o Trying not to jinx it, I pulled out the game and made my move as quickly as I could. I feel the storm is brewing again and have to dive in to the work again soon.

Game for me is pretty much over, as it has been since the middle of the game. Everyone getting their tile the very turn they need it while I do not, it's JCZ tournament all over again.

Hooray! Well done Yellow...

Game for me is pretty much over, as it has been since the middle of the game. Everyone getting their tile the very turn they need it while I do not, it's JCZ tournament all over again.

Everyone? Maybe others would disagree, but I don't feel like I've had much luck with the tiles either. The only thing that has kept me in the running so far was you joining my second knight onto MrNumbers' city (I don't think he's ever going to forgive either of us for that). Certainly not any skill on my part anyway!

So (hypothetically) we have a game with a turn sequence of Red Green Blue.

Red draws a tile and completes a structure and claims points.  Usually the turn wold move to Green but if the tile Red placed also scored a wagon for Blue then the turn would go to Blue to score and move his wagon before the turn moved to Green to draw and place the next tile?

You can score in turn order: Red scores his points, Green scores his points, Blue scores his points.
If there are wagons, you move them in turn order: first Red, second Green, third Blue.
But after Red's turn it is Green with the next turn, the move of the blue wagon is in the scoring phase of Red as any scoring which is necessary of Red's tile placing, same with the wagons: after moving them Red's turn is over and Green is the next.

Numbers Man, if my calculations are correct you stand a 25% chance of not drawing a straight bit of road for your final tile...

OK, here is my last move.
As Dan calculated, my chances to draw a straight road were 75%. So it happened.
I didn't think much about that move - finished my (and Rosco's) cloister (+9 points each) and added some points to my road.

Quality of meeple placement? :))
Yellow must be a thief at the RRRR tile, not a farmer.
And one of your own farmers is in a very strange position :D

Sorry Rosco but we were playing first to 26 wins anyway so I already won on my last turn but forgot to tell anyone.

If it helps you could just photoshop your tile on to the last photo? It'd be nice to finish the game this side of Christmas and I'm ready and raring to go...

That tile was indeed drawn by yellow.

Under dans meeple in the big city.
We can change your tile with the straight road. It has the same effect anyway.

Rosco, here is how the game stands with your latest tile:

I can't think what you might have done with the frfr tile (the one you should have had) that you couldn't do with the crfr tile (the one shown in your picture) but it's up to you if you want to move it. You don't have to rebuild the whole game again, just indicate on the picture if you can or give us directions to where you'd want it!

I think, I would have seen a better use for Rosco for this (or, no matter, the other) tile. But still it would have made no real difference. Dan, in my opinion as well, won anyway. Only the points would be a little closer together.

I had completely forgotten about it! No wonder the math in my head went haywire because the pile is empty and I thought I lost a tile.

*sigh*

Even the final tile I am deprived of. It's just a cruel game!

EDIT: Let's also remember that Rosco could very easily have cut yours and Yellows score by 6 and mine by 3 if he'd placed his last tile differently. It would have cost him a point too, but it would have meant you went from joint second to third...

Yes, we were thinking of the same thing. I did some error in the final scoring on MrNumbers or Rosco, so I did not see the tie coming. (Actually thought, MrNumbers would be secure 2nd with or without the six points.) So actually it did made a little difference after all.

It was very interesting watching this game over the weeks.

Main reason why I helped him, was because he was the one that ruined my chances the minimal to win. It pays not to be cruel.

Just an afterthought.

To save players from having to keep the board set up all the time or re-creating it for each turn, this game could have been played using JCloister as the game save files are very small , just a few KiloBytes.  It would have been easy to pass the game save files back and forth on the forum or e-mail.

Gerry, I appreciate that you want to help by making this easier, but in this particular situation I think many of us would agree that the physical components is way more fun. I've really enjoyed the visual shenanigans and had a few good laughs. Without physical components, you wouldn't be able to have stickered meeples, phantoms, winter edition tiles, new edition tiles, best tablecloth contest, etc.

Thanks to all the players and I hope you guys organize another game in the new year.
