The Princess & The King: Element Match-Ups #7

Element Match-Ups is a new series of weekly challenges for all members of CarcassonneCentral. Each week, an element from a large expansion will be matched up with an element from a small expansion. Your job: try it out and let everybody know what you think about the pair. Consider this a quasi-scientific survey in that you are only playing with these two elements and the base game — nothing else! Otherwise the results will be skewed. You have a week to try the match-up from the time the match is announced until the next match is announced (which usually occurs sometime between Friday and Saturday, depending on time zone).

This week our elements are THE PRINCESS (from The Princess & The Dragon [Expansion #3]) and THE KING (from Count, King & Cult [Expansion #6]). This is a deviously royal match-up for this All Hallows' Eve. The Princess allows a player to remove a Follower from any City that she is placed on (in lieu of placing a piece of wood) before the feature is scored. This means that Cities may suddenly find themselves bereft of knights and ripe for the sacking! Meanwhile, the King, that sly rascal, rewards the player who has built the largest City with a variable number of bonus points at game end. Naturally he sends his daughter around ensuring that Cities keep getting bigger but nobody will be around to collect the reward. How well do these elements work together? There's only one way to find out...

The elements are set, the challenge is issued, and now it is for you to decide whether these elements work well together or are terrible companions. Summarise your experience below in however much detail you wish, and feel free to share any strategic advice you have for other players taking the challenge.

Nice way of theming this, however, it works just in English. In the German OV the "princess" is not the kings daughter but rather a, not sure if the term is correct, "court maid"? She is some kind of noble woman, but not of royal blood.

Well good thing this is an English-language forum. I'll be sure not to attempt the joke on CarcassonneForum, although I only ever post there when this forum is down.

Also, the term roughly translates to the female non-married version of a castellan, or Castle Master. So I suppose this makes her the Castle Mistress (de jure).

"Damsel & Dragon" would have probably been the best translation. Maybe Z-Man should consider this for their version of CarcII. It looks like a rather accurate translation of "Burgfräulen", gives the same misleading hint in the title, that the Burgfräulein/Princess is in danger because of the dragon (a "damsel in distress"), and sounds great because of the alliteration. (Might be mixed up with "Dungeon & Dragon", though. ;))
