The World Cup of Carcassonne Central is our most prestigious competition of the year. Now in its second year, the World Cup consists of a group stage followed by a knock-out stage and will include various combinations of expansions at each stage of the contest. As well as being free to enter, there will be prizes for all participants, random spot prizes and a specially made trophy that could be yours to keep until the next World Cup (if you win)! 8)
It isn't yet known exactly how the initial group stage will be arranged as this depends largely on how many people take part. Just as an example though, 32 players would most likely be organised into 8 groups of 4 (mini-leagues), and the top 2 from each group would go through to the knock-out stage. All matches will be head-to-heads (2-player) and should be played via JCloisterZone according to our normal competition rules.
Why should you sign up to be part of this?
- Players of all ages and abilities are welcome
- Opportunity to meet and play against other Carcassonne players here at Carcassonne Central
- Chance to win cool Carcassonne stuff for free without even having to leave your house!
I'm going to allow at least two weeks for anyone who is interested to sign up by posting below and will look to kick the tournament off in early September. So please don't miss your opportunity to sign up to the biggest online Carcassonne competition of the year by hitting that Reply button now! :(y)

Welcome to the forum! I dont think a short holiday would be too much of a problem, as long as you can play all your games, before or soon afterwards.
Dan WDYT?

Wow, 29-30 people already is a great response, thanks everyone for participating! This will be the biggest tournament we've ever had. :green-meeple:

Hello all, and thanks to everyone who has signed-up to take part so far. I’m sure it’s going to be a great tournament for all involved!
Since we’re getting close to the deadline now, I’m going to reveal that all games at the group stage will be played using the basic tiles + one major expansion + two minor expansions. I’m not going to say what they are, but will reveal that the total number of tiles involved in each game will be... 107.
If anyone wants to hazard a guess as to which expansions you think will be included you have until midnight tomorrow to let me know what you think. There might even be a small bonus prize for the first person to suggest the correct combination; happy guessing! :blue-meeple:

glad I could help. i actually had River until i changed my mind in an Edit.
but....will there be 107 tiles in play....

So, as Decar and Paul have established (thanks guys!), games at the group stage will include River 1, Inns & Cathedrals and King & Robber Baron. These have been chosen as they’re all nice, simple expansions that most people will be familiar with, but the combination means there’s plenty of interesting tiles, lots to think about and huge potential for some exciting games! :(y)
Do check the CAR if you’re not 100% sure about the rules to any of these though, and I recommend playing a few practice games in JCloisterZone with this combination of expansions against an AI opponent too.
Happy river and inn and cathedral and king and robber baroning everyone! :)
-
I guess I'll give it a try. :)
-
Just beat the AI with these "group stage" expansions 200-86. I'm sure this result will be typical of my tourney results... ;-)

Thanks very much but I'm afraid my knowledge of extensions is pretty poor. Given the constraints, you can leave me off the starting list. I'll set my sights on the 2016 World Cup!

Just played a couple of games on JCZ against AI using these expansions and enjoyed it. I'm really looking forward to this tournament starting even though I don't think I'll progress past the first round!!

Hi all,
Just wanted to give a heads up that I'm on holiday next Monday till the 5th...I'm hoping that isn't a problem, but let me know if it is.

That's a shame. Especially after the game we had on Sunday evening! I won't try to persuade you otherwise, but I will say the complexity of the expansions used in the group stage wouldn't be too much for someone such as yourself to deal with even if you only play a handful of games again an AI opponent beforehand. Up to you.

Okay, you have persuaded me! I'll give it a go. I tried the AI. Feels very busy compared to the basic game with all those new tiles. I'm afraid I still have those dates that I can't play though. I'll be here and there's not much Internet:-

I'm sure the holiday won't be a problem. The island looks amazing, where is that?

Well, it's not ideal but I don't suppose it will be a problem as long as you don't mind playing catch-up when you get back!
Hope you have a wonderful holiday though! :)
-

It is the island of Lundy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lundy), England.

A merit for MrNumbers for recognising British Islands; a useful talent I'm sure!
-
To all who are concerned about some of the expansions:
Prior to the announcement here, I had never used the King and Robber Baron expansion. I don't own the physical expansion yet.
Just had a quick look at the rules, and it is very simple! JCZ handles all the details, so it really won't impact on your game play, beyond encouraging players to build longer roads and larger (more tiles) cities.
There are only five new tiles, and those tiles are nothing weird or obnoxious. Very good additions to the tiles available.
Not a reason to hold back from joining the competition!!
-
Yes exactly, thanks rfielder! :(y)
There are no special rules for King & Robber Baron other than that the person who completes/ closes/ finishes the longest road (in terms of number of tiles) gets 1 bonus point for every completed road on the final map, and the player who completes/ closes/ finishes the largest city (in terms of number of tiles) gets 1 bonus point for every completed city. This can be quite a worthwhile bonus, especially if you end up with both, so it's well worth thinking about during the game (especially large games).
The tiles themselves are pretty interesting too, which is part of the reason they were included at this stage of the competition. :)

Excellent! Thanks guys, you've made the right decision! :)
Now that we're up to 35 players with another 2 hopefully in the pipeline, I thought it would be a good idea to share some more detailed information about how the first stage of the competition is going to run:
Group stage
Every participant will be assigned to one of 8 groups (labelled A – H) and each group will have 5 participants. Everybody in each group should play a single, head-to-head game against everyone else in their group individually. This means that everyone taking part in the World Cup will get to play 4 games at this stage of the competition.
Games
Games should be played via JCloisterZone version 3.3.1 which can be downloaded here: http://jcloisterzone.com/builds/JCloisterZone-3.3.1.zip (http://jcloisterzone.com/builds/JCloisterZone-3.3.1.zip). You must be running the same version of JCZ as your opponent in order for the game to work (so let's all stick with 3.3.1) and please remember to unzip this before you attempt to run it as you will encounter difficulties connecting to a game otherwise!
In order that they can take place, online games require a host which may be one of the players, or even a third person who isn't taking part in the match. If neither you nor your opponent has the ability to host games directly, please ask if someone else in your group is able to host for you at the time of your scheduled match. Failing this, someone in the chat room (see below) may be able to host for you or there is an online server which can be used by selecting JCloisterZone's "Play Online" option.
In the event of either player losing connection while the game is in progress, the game should be saved so that it can be reloaded. There will normally be someone in the chat room who will guide you through how this can be achieved, but it is a relatively simple process...
Expansions
All games at the group stage should include the following expansions:
River 1 (removed)- Inns & Cathedrals
- King & Robber Baron
(these can be selected on the pre-game screen where you choose a colour and enter your name).
Please also enable the "Randomize playing order" checkbox so that the starting player will be chosen at random.
How groups will be ranked
Players will be awarded 2 group points for a win or 1 group point for a draw so that an overall group-ranking can be established. "Points Differential" (total points scored by you minus total points scored against you in all games) will be used as a tie-breaker and the top 2 players from each group will go through to the knock-out stage. C:-)
Communication
I will send an email round to each group once the competition is live (current target is 31st August). Please use this and/ or Private Messages (PMs) as an opportunity to schedule suitable times for your matches. Don't just sign in to the chat room and hope that someone will be there and available to play! ::) There will also be a dedicated thread for each group (which I will link to in the email I send you) which is intended for you to record scores, post screenshots (including score breakdown) and game reports so that your group's progress can be tracked.
Chat room
Our web-based chat page is a handy place to meet with your opponent before your match, or to chat with other members of Carcassonne Central. It can be accessed through your browser by following this link: http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html (http://sydby.com/carcassonne/irc/index.html). You will usually be able to find a third-party host here as necessary, and can also seek technical support relating to JCloisterZone or crashed games in the unlikely event that you need it.
Prizes
Everyone who completes all of their matches will receive (at least) a special tile/ expansion that has been uniquely designed for this World Cup and is not available anywhere else. There will also be a bonus prize for every member of the first group to finish all of their group stage matches, as well as spot prizes for several other undisclosed achievements! There will be a further bonus prize for everyone who reaches the knock-out stage (top 16) and naturally, something quite wonderful for the overall winner (as well as the honour of keeping our trophy until the next 2016 World Cup). So, in short, there's lots of cool Carcassonne goodies to play for and none of it will cost you anything! ^-^
What happens next?
More information regarding the rest of the tournament (specifically the knock-out stage) will be disclosed as the group stage begins to wind down.
Please ask now if you have any questions. Because if you have a question, the chances are that others might have the same question and I want everything to be as clear as can be in advance of what’s sure to be a fantastic competition for all involved!
:blue-meeple:

Great work Dan. I presume you've already taken into account that two people in the same group could both be the first to finish, if it is the final group game for both players.

It's a group prize for every member of the first group to finish. It will only be a problem if two groups finish their last match at exactly the same time, but that seems unlikely... ;)

Hi danisthirty,
do you need a x-score list for the world cup?
-
Hi danisthirty,
do you need a x-score list for the world cup?
I don't know yet. I think the scoring should be relatively simple within each group, but there will be 8 groups to keep track of which might be quite a lot of work.
Do you not wish to take part? :'(
-
Do you not wish to take part? :'(
No - I will only organize the x-score lists if neccessary.

That is a shame. But if you wish to be in charge of keeping scores again then I'm very happy for you to do so provided that the work isn't too much?

Makes perfect sense to me.
Top 8 players (based on Elo score at the end of the last league) will be split between the groups A - H so that none of them are in the same group. All other players will be picked and assigned groups at random.
I would like to join if there is still space
There is. Welcome to the World Cup dustyu! :)

Welcome to the forums and the tournament Mrs. Decar! :) :(y)
2 spaces left now, then we can begin!

I think, it's save to say, that this WC will reach for into October, and now I got a confirmation from my sister, who lives in the US, that she will pay me a visit, then. So I will be most of the time, when not working, occupied with her and think, it is better to withdraw from competition before it starts. Very sorry, but I will be back for other tournaments, and I also look very much forward to spend some time with my sister again. Maybe, I will introduce her to Carcassonne as well.

Well, 60% of the players will only play 4 games, quite likely all in September...
Another 20% will play one more game (5).
The last 20% will play 6 or 7 games.
I expect the rythm to be quite slow around October: either we wait for the last group stage matches to be completed or you play max 1 match every 1-2 weeks in the knock-out phase until you're eliminated... If you've passed the group stage of course.
It's not what I would call the most demanding tournament...
It's your call ;)

Hahahahaha
Congratulations for the avatar mrs.decar!!!!
Merit for this. I like it

Thanks! Although truth be told i roped in decar to create it for me :)

Good to know. :(y) It is my first WC, so I was not familiar with that. Under this circumstances, I think, I can handle it, and will take part. Thanks!

Great. So we're still at 38 then.
I really want to kick this off as soon as possible as it's going to be awesome. Come on people, just 2 more, please! O:-)

Kettlefish? Come on! ;)
-
Forgot to mention - monwil and I will be away on vacation from Sep 11 to Sep 23 inclusive. We will be in Cuba for most of that time, and the internet in Cuba is both scarce and expensive from what I hear.
If this creates an issue for the competition, we will step aside. We do not wish to hold things up.

Thanks Robert. But I don't anticipate everyone being 100% available immediately as soon as the competition begins. It's to be expected that some of the games may take a little longer to organise...
-
Kettlefish? Come on! ;)
No Kettlefish?
Can we even begin the event without her???
-
Do you not wish to take part? :'(
No - I will only organize the x-score lists if neccessary.
I don't think kettlefish wants to take part... :(

Are there any spaces available?
If so, I'm in. Finally got the software working!

Welcome James! It's good to hear from you again. And yes, there is one space left in the World Cup and you've just taken it!
So, now we've reached 40 participants we can get started. I'll post the groups and send the emails tomorrow morning!
Good luck all! :) :(y)

Your group seems quite tough and well balanced (only 60 ELO between the highest and the lowest rated player), with lots of experienced CC-league players. I think we can call it the "group of death" of this World Cup.
-
Due to an apparent "bug" with the way River 1 is implemented within JCloisterZone, please avoid using this expansion in your game. At this stage of the competition we will now be using Inns & Cathedrals and King & Robber Baron only.

Sorry if I missed this, but is there a place where all the scores/results so far are summarized? Or is that just posted after the group stage is competed?
Also, I noticed some people in the chatroom were commenting on the game I was playing with Dan yesterday while it was going on -- how do you peep in on someone else's game?
Thx in advance for answering my newbie questions. ;)

kettlefish is in charge of keeping all the scores. I think she has a tabular score-sheet for each group which she posts on the group thread every time there is more than 1 or 2 scores to report. I don't think we've seen anything in our group yet as there has only been one game (ours).
Anyone can connect to a game in the same way as you connected to the instance of JCloisterZone running on my laptop last night, so in the same way as if they were playing. If they don't claim a meeple on the pre-game screen though, they're not actively taking part in the game and remain merely as a spectator. Nobody besides you and I was connected to our game so I don't think anybody else could have been watching it. Are you sure they were talking about our game specifically? I don't remember seeing anything myself... ???
-
Hi CarcinFool,
the x-score lists:
I will post a x-score list for each group in their own topics.
In the groups A-H - each group is playing 10 games total - that means 80 games in the first round. If I post for each game in each group a screenshot of the x-score list - that will be 80 postings...
I decided to post a screenshot of the x-score for each group when 2-3 games have been played.
Then I have some less work - something between 24 - 40 postings.
After the groups - in the knock-out round - I will post more often the x-score lists.
-
Thx Kettlefish! I totally understand the need to not be overwhelmed with posting screenshots here, there, and everywhere! ;-) 8)
Would it be useful to keep a copy of the scoresheet on Dropbox or somewhere else on the web so that people could just visit that link to see the latest version?
-
Yes. How about a Google drive spreadsheet?
-
No GoogleDrive spreadsheet.
It need much time to programm the excel table.
I don't like to programm it on a different software.
If you like to have a screenshot - then play your games in your groups. >:D

Sure, leave it as Excel but if you place the live copy in a google drive folder and share it read only to public and share a link to it, then everyone can see the live scores. If you don't like google, use dropbox.
Just a suggestion.

I am comfortable with Kettlefish handling it as needed. This a lot of work for her, for a competition that she in which she is not participating, so we should make it as convenient for her as possible.

Can we use the Play Online option, using farin's server?
We just played a game on that server, and it worked well.

I don't see why not. My game with Jere was played online as well. Worked.
There were some reliability problems with it in previous versions, hence my preference for direct or third-party hosting. But I haven't experienced any problems for a while now and haven't heard any reports from anyone else having any either. No reason other than this for avoiding it, so use it if you like, but be prepared to save the game and have it reloaded on another host machine if required.

The same evening I played another game vs. Rosco also using the JCZ online server so absolutely no complains so far...
Can't say the same about my own internet connection recently...

Question for Dan:
Last year for the first WC, there was an issue in the knock-out where 2 participants from same group phase could meet again too early or something similar (my memory is failing here...)
You know what I'm talking about? Was this addressed? Thanks!
-

Yes Jéré, I remember exactly what you mean. It was down to the way I paired the competitors in the initial knock-out round being flawed. Of course, there is still the chance that two people from the same group might meet in the final but this is unavoidable (and exciting)! This time I will make sure the pairings are arranged such that nobody will meet an opponent from their same group before this though...
-
Hi again, just thought I'd post to show the following chart for how I plan the knock-out stage to be arranged:
This isn't final yet, but if you win your group you should expect to play a 2nd-place finisher from another group and vice versa (obviously) in your first knock-out stage game.
If two people from the same group want to play against each other again in the knock-out stage then they may do so, but not until the final! ;)
Hope this all makes sense and seems fair. I'm posting it now so that any problems can be identifed early on.
-
Danishthirty, good job with your chart, I love it!
In knock-out stage, it's still be one match format? Maybe it would fairer if winner needed to win 2 games? What do you think about that? I don't think it would extended that much lasting of the stage.

Hi Merlin.
Thanks for the suggestion, but when we reach the knock-out stage games will be noticeably longer as there will be a variety of expansions included rather than the basic ones that we’ve used in the group stage so far. If games are taking an hour or so at present, it isn’t unlikely that this may stretch out to two hours or more at the next stage. Expecting players to commit to 4 (or even 6) hours per match (as might be required for 2 or 3 games) is simply too much, especially when you take time zone differences into account.
However, if it was base-game only then this seems like a great suggestion. In fact, the original league that we did last year was base-game only and each match consisted of two games (which got tricky if either game was tied), plus we have “challenge matches” which are part of the Order of the Meeple and which are also base-game only (the winner being the first player to win two games).
Thanks again for the suggestion though, I’m always keen to hear what others have to say!
Dan

I think at least 2 of these are scheduled to take place this week. If you're involved in one that isn't, please fire off an email to your opponent(s) at your earliest convenience. C:-)
PS - I've given merit to Carcking for making himself available at 3am in order to play his game with Chooselife; that's dedication!
-
Haha - thanks for the Merit Dan! But really the benefit is already mine...I think I need to play bleary-eyed more often... :@
-
There must be only a handful of games left to be played in the group stage now. Any chance they could all be played by the end of this week?
-
6 games left. Mrs_danisthirty and farin should be playing their game this evening. No telling when the other 5 will take place... ???

If farin wins by 41 points or more he will top the group and play you.
If farin loses or wins by less than 41 points it will be me.
Whichever way it ends up, those are going to be two great matches!

That would be between farin and Becky, but I imagine Becky would probably prefer it to be played behind closed doors (i.e. no spectators). Even I won’t be watching as I have a fish tank to clean out...

Any decision on the expansions for the next round?

Following groups have finished all their 10 games in the world cup 2015:

Apologies to everyone who has asked about this for the delay in announcing it here, and thank you for your patience... O:-)
My aim was to set up a series of games that build towards the final in terms of size and excitement, but I also wanted things to be balanced and fun for everyone and there has been a certain amount of discussion over which expansions should be included at what stage, and how well they interact with each other.
So, without further ado, here it is: :)
Round 1 (1/8F):
Inns & Cathedrals + Abbey & Mayor + Mage & Witch = 110 tiles
Round 2 (QF):
Traders & Builders + The Tower + The Fliers + The German Monasteries + The Phantom = 128 122 tiles (cloisters from base game removed)
Round 3 (SF):
Traders & Builders + Bridges, Castles & Bazaars + Goldmines + River 2 + The Phantom = 127 tiles (1 removed as start tile is replaced by River)
Round 4 (F):
Inns & Cathedrals + Princess & Dragon + The Tower + Abbey & Mayor + Mage & Witch + Festival + The Besiegers + The Phantom = 174 tiles
With 3 games left to play before the knock-out stage can begin, there should still be plenty of time for those unfamiliar with any of these expansions to get used to them in JCloisterZone (and there's usually someone available for a bit of "friendly" competition in the chat room). :(y)

A question - when playing with the German Monasteries, one has the option to "Keep basic cloisters in game". Will that option be checked?
A comment - some of these can not be used when playing against the AI. A good way to learn how a new expansion works is to play a few games against the AI, but this will not be possible with some of the expansions listed.

Very true. But there's nothing to stop people from playing against other people here or even playing a solo game (without opponents).
-
Thanks for publishing. :(y)
Need to get learning these expansions now before our match Dan!!

Not the biggest fan of Mage & Witch but I will make sure Farin hates it even more after our game :)
EDIT: Though, it will be the first time I try it in a 1vs1 match so my opinion could change.

I'm quite fond of it. But I certainly admire your confidence! :)

An answer: yes!
Correct answer: no. I hadn't realised that removing the cloisters from the basic game was the recommended way to play. So no, the basic cloisters will not be kept in the game - do not check this option!

So, do we use the phantom in Round 2? I assume not, as it's easier to change the text than the picture. Could you confirm?
-
Nope. No phantom in Round 2. I've also taken the time to update the picture to avoid confusion as much as possible!

So, another recap of where we are with 3 games left to play:

13 of the 16 qualifiers have been identified, so the outstanding games will be critical in identifying who the final 3 will be...
