Title: What would you consider the best expansion tiles? Specifically the tiles.
Post by: Clarky on February 08, 2018, 02:04:52 PM
Take the 10 expansions and ignore any of the new rules, features, meeples, catapults, etc. So now you have to pick an expansion based purely on the tiles themselves and how they’d enhance the base game, which expansion would you choose?

Welcome to the forum Clarky - a great post to start with  :(y)

I would say Princess and Dragon because the majority of the tiles can already be found in the base game, I find it the easiest to maintain a tile count, without having to worry about weird and wonderful permutations and corner-case tiles.

I like Hills and Sheep the best.
Some tiles make it much easier to sneak into a city or a field.

Count king and robber. Sucker for a river to start the game.

My favorite tiles are in the photo below.  Hills and Sheep has multiple of my favorites, so it wins.  Abbey and Mayor is a close second.   A lot of the tiles I really like appear in later expansions.  For example the tower tile is in the gold mine expansion and the jerk house from T&B got his comeuppance by getting the plague  :(y)

Moving away from the 10 expansions I always add gq and festival to base tiles to give a better spread of tiles. Not necessary with the Wheel of Fortune as this obviously has a better spread when compared to the base game.

Welcome to the forum Clarky!  :)
Personally, I really like the tiles from Abbey and Mayor as they have a lot of new tile configurations as well as Abbeys.

Welome Clarky!

I would vote for Traders and Builders. I like expansions/tiles that bring extra elements of interest like the resources with this expansion. For similar reasons I also like Gold Mines ... who knew there was Gold in the hills of Carcassonne!!

Most of the gold seems to have been hidden in cloisters. Make of that what you will!

The tiles in most of the boxed expansions seem to focus on changing the overall balance of certain types of feature. Examples being Traders & Builders which has mostly city tiles including lots of new configurations of "splitter" tiles, and the Catapult (and Ferries) which have a lot of interesting road tiles. My favourite though, based purely on tile distribution, is almost certainly Inns & Cathedrals as it introduces certain tiles that weren't (but perhaps should have been) in the base game introducing some interesting possibilities.
