I think most people know about the new Carcassonne Spin-Off from the Around the World Series is continuing this year with a Safari theme.
But we've not started a post about it yet!
Steph Hodge provided some information on her BGG blog: All the Meeples of the Rainbow (https://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/75840/gathering-part-1-basically-all-games-were-played-p)
She was at 'Gathering of Friends' this weekend
Here's the excerpt:
Next I got to try another one coming out but it is in early prototype forms. It is a new Carcassonne game called Safari! New to me!
In this game you will find a lot of familiar things to the Carc you know and love. There is a new way to score though. You will be looking for different types of animals in a given region. There are added jeeps that will give additional incentive and points for placing where they are. What changes are the cloister type buildings give you tokens and the tokens are used to form groups of different animals on the board in desert areas.
This part was clever and interesting. i was confused on it for most of the game so I lost horribly, but it was of course very good and I love Carc games in general. I found it to be unlike any other Carc game I played. Still doesn't hold my top most interested to play Carc though, but I would happily play anytime and look forward to seeing the final result!
Edit: The really confusing this is why they decided to name a spin-off after one of our members :D
-
Looking forward to new Carc games!:)
-
Thanks for posting Decar, I was not aware of this.
-
I had a chance to play it this week thanks to our friends from HiGs. It itches me so much to write about it, but I promised not to. I will just look at the photos myself :)
Anyway, there are some nice twists to the rules that were not present in any of the past versions and I promise that no animals were harm during playthrough of this game.
-
Thats good to hear. When will the release be?
-
When will the release be?
This autumn, in Leipzig and Essen.
-
will there be other news to essen?
-
Carcassonne Safari will get very nice graphics.
The test playing of this game was great at our fan meeting in Ostritz. Maj. Frost, it was nice to met you at the first international fan meeting week.

some minor clues are in my write-up of the First International Meetup Event!
-
Christianmocking - I was asked to not share any photos of the game. If you have come by a photo of your own I ask that you respect the publisher's wishes also.
I don't believe this is your photo either - which means you have taken it without credit. I think you may have taken it from a forum (...Czech?) who are well known for copying other people's work from this forum and claiming it as their own. I urge you to not provide them with any excuses to continue their malpractise.
-
Decar,
I think that Christianmocking has the picture from the HiG facebook page. There I found the picture of the CC-Safari box.

A beautiful box art! Great to see it develop too!
-
That's a pretty box! I hope they bring back the dark red border a couple frames back. It'll hurt to cover some of that beautiful art, but it still looks nice, and matches with the rest of the Around the World series.

Looks interesting :-)

Guess I can share some thoughts, after playing the prototype at the International Meetup last month.
I really liked the way it's possible to encourage/give insensitive other players to help you work on features. I'm not sure how it will hold up with 2-players though. I know MrNumbers had strong feelings on how the jeep can be misused.
I like how the waterholes are constructed, and how you can steal points away by completing other players.
I found the trees somewhat difficult. There are plenty of them and they are the key to big points granting you access to watering holes.
The tile selection is very diverse, similar to Over Hills and Dales.

And a new close detail pic here: https://www.facebook.com/237314407298/posts/10156635752637299/

I guess I will follow Decar with some of my opinions. Naturally those are based on prototype version.
Graphics are mediocre. Far from beautiful Amazonas or South Seas.
Each previous Spinn-off introduced some new fun mechanism. I do not find new rules fun. This game is all about biting few points here and there. Some from the jeep, some from the watering hole, some from the small forest.
This is clearly for beginner players, so they have chance to get few points each turn. Players end up in the end very close in the scoring track and there is very little chance for some long term strategies.
Naturally all that is just my opinion but what upset me most is that Gold Rush and Safari will be only around the world spin-offs published in Poland by polish publisher, while they are two worst up to this moment.
-
Looking at the video the tiles seem more vivid that I remember, I hope that's not just camera trickery. I guess I'll find out at Essen!
I didn't think the choice of colours were fantastic, though the technical layouts were good.
I was surprised to see animals being used to keep score again after a similar mechanic was utilized in Amazonas.
-
Most probably colors will be more vivid on glossy tiles than those printed on office printer that we saw at 1stICM.
One think I like about animals is this "ticket to ride" style progressive points counting.
Maybe I am just expecting too much. It's hard to do something so fun like amazonas or south seas every time.
-
Its not a good choice in my opinion. It is so not original....
-
HiG has a short overview of the rules at their homepage:
"Safari Regelübersicht" (https://www.hans-im-glueck.de/news/Safari-Overview.html)
-
I dont know if the following news from Spielbox/Nostheide has something to do with Carc. Safari or one of the upcoming new mini expansions....but I´m very corious about this :)
The winners of the spielbox-Toto are selected and the winners will be notified in the next few days. More than 90% of the entries were of the same opinion as the jury and chose AZUL.
From now on the job exchange on spielbox.de is opened. Here you can register if you are looking for a job at the fair or if you need help for your booth. Please enter only if you are really interested. Last year, a number of people came together in this way.
The next newsletter will come in the next days and will especially please the Carcassonne friends :-)!
Herzliche Grüße / best regards

Saw this too Big Boss..... I'm hoping it's not news that they found an old garage with a box full of Plague expansions. Hopefully something more interesting :)

haha ;D like the cathars / or tunnels (I don´t remeber well) found in a mysterious chest in their attic >:D
Or, I think last year, the besiegers found by someone at cundco in some other magic place... :violet-meeple:

999 games have announced the release of the game today on their website!
https://www.999games.nl/carcassonne-safari-bordspel.html?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=CAR38
Interesting, as Cundco hasn't got it on their site yet...
I'm going to holland in a couple of weeks, so might order it to have waiting for me 8)
-
I asked 999 Games on their Facebook announcement if they actually do have it in stock (as some website offer the Z-man game version only to pre-order).
They confirmed that they have it in stock, so i've ordered on from their website :)
As i'll be picking it up from my parents later this month, it will be a wait and see what i'll have first; the new game, or the mini-expansion from SD (as Decar has one waiting for me i believe :) )
-
Ordered also! But the quality of the dutch tiles is most of the time different than the german ones.
-
I got mail that my piece in on way to me. I should get it on Monday.
-
Carcassonne Safari is now available on CundCo website!
https://cundco.de/detail/index/sArticle/259/sCategory/5
-
And shipping costs as much as the game! That is just too dang much! I blame our idiot President and his stupid trade wars.
Nope, I will wait until some American source stacks this one, or when i can get it through amazon prime.
-
Strangely I am more excited by the imminent arrival of Ruthless. Perhaps I need at appointment with my doctor?
-
Yeah, even to the UK the shipping costs are fairly high I think.
Hopefully z-man games will pick it up soon!
Mine arrived yesterday at my parents in the Netherlands, so now I have the game, but have to wait 2,5 weeks before I can open it hahaha
-
Polish distributor really did good job. We had premiere on Monday.
-
Seems Cundco have gone back to their old ways of handling international shipping. It's pretty much prohibitive, unless placing a large order.
Good thing I'm visiting Essen in a couple of weeks. If folks want me to pick something up for them, let me know

Any carcassonne promo from this Essen for me! ;D

-
+1 for spiel promotional tile should there be such a thing this year. Thanks Decar

Only any carcassonne promotional tile(s) if they have them this year :) we're making quite a bit of a package of stuff hahaha
-
Gotta be worth having another meetup soon to provide you your shipment!
-
Has anyone played already? What impression do you have? I have already played several games and I have to say that it is the spin off of the series around the world that I like the most. :D
-
We have played a couple of games with this new spin off, and we like it very much!
We are still getting used to the idea of the tokens, to balance between getting them and using them, but we like it :)
It might be up there with South Seas and Amazonas for us, which are our favourites :)

That's good news :) now all I have to do is wait another month before they reach Australia :(...

Played it at paxu. It's definitely a carc atpund the world game.
My group dug it. The scoring was a bit diffierent. It was fun

Yesterday I finally decided to get me a copy of Safari from the local store. Better late than never.
-
Yeah, I mean mechanistically speaking it is a very interesting version of Carcassonne to explore, even if the thematic implementation of said mechanics is a bit rough. It is however unfortunate that Safari is easily one of the top 2 ugliest looking versions. Is there anybody who actually likes the art on this thing? ??? (I hope at least someone does). It doesn't bother me that much though - gameplay is good.
-
I'm guilty. I like the art of Carcassonne safari and the mechanism. emoji code16]

Not guilty! Im glad that someone likes the art as well as mechanics, because everybody I know, who played it (myself included) dislikes the art.
-
I think it looks better than Discovery, Castle, and City. That being said it doesn't hold a candle to Amazonas or South Seas. The watering hole bit always seemed silly looking, especially when unfinished.
-
I thought the tiles looked pretty, but I haven't opened it yet.
As long as they almost match the original/v2 art I'm fine with it.
Doubt I will be playing it though, just wanted some new tiles and 10+ of each of the common expansions can only get you so far.
I am curious to test a 6 pl game using 6 towers and 6 dragons only to see how much we are able to score. But I digress. :)
